It's torn plastic. Looks like it's from an MRE. clearly you can see this was torn off. Go find a hard piece of plastic and tear it across and see the the same results.

There is writing on it. It will take a few weeks for some genius to decipher the writing, and decipher they will, because the letters look familiar.

Could this be from the rover? yes. And even if it's not, what is the likelihood that they will say it is from the rover? Very likely.

picture quality is crap, my 8 mp camera-phone does a better picture than the rover.

Great observation, especially considering prior to this we were stuck on the 'used alien condom' theory.

If the camera is looking downward, something moving across the face of the lens is more likely to just fall off. Whatever the speck is, it moved from the ground to the mystery object. I think it's most likely a windblown bit of dirt.

Did they pick it up or analyse it. Is there some way to find out.
You would think they would pick it up and bring it home.
Also interesting that they are letting us see it.

Nevertheless VERY interesting object and surely 2 days is a long time to examine some "rubbish"

We don't know what it is but I think we can clearly see that it is not as old as everything else there. It is clean and ontop of the rocks so it somehow landed there. Fell or flew recently. To me it looks like a sliver or rock that I've seen before. Doesn't look like insulation or fish to me, it looks sharp, solid, and lifeless.

Any plastic exposed when the Rover made its entry into the atmosphere; would probably show serious damage/melting.
That being said, some equipment on the Rover were not extended from the body of the unit until after the landing. These were in compartments on the Rover.
Could easily be from the Rover.
But...what the hell, I have no clue what it is...it does look like plastic to me. The waffling on the side of the piece is the same make when you tear a thicker/harder plastic. Like wire wrap.

but also if you look at it, the shadowing is a bit wrong to me. if 'it' is lying on top of the round rocks we should see more shadows on the ground...

They've been studying it for days. If it were a piece of the rover somebody would have identified it. It looks like something that's been in a crash, as if it were ripped off. I think they'll find more similar pieces.

Great...we traverse the galaxy for knowledge and wisdom, but instead of leaving a flag we end up littering...anyone wanna guess the fine on this one?

Actually them making a fuss and taking lots of pics convinces me that it is actually Mars, cos they wouldn't do that if it was just garbage in the desert somewhere. On the other hand if it was alien you would expect them to classify it secret.
One explanation that makes sense is that it's a lead up to Obama announcing finding "Ancient Ruins" on Mars as predicted in that other thread (time traveller...)
