A serious Bible question
I've heard the King James Bible is the ONLY true Bible. There are so many 'new' versions which are apparently innacurate and some say, of the Devil.
I am NOT a Christian but I do enjoy reading the Bible (I read a lot!) and am mostly concerned with historical accuracy.

If you're a Bible 'expert', Christian or otherwise I would appreciate your views and any additional information on this subject.
Thanks :-)

Or people that are too lazy to capitalize words as they write. Those folks are usually really smart.

I detest King and Brown...amateur rubbish. Real authors would include Miller, Orwell, Huxley, Wyndham, Heinlein, Wells, Burgess, Burroughs and so forth.
But thanks anyway :-)

KJV is your best bet. Get a dictionary/concordance, Read them all and get a feel for the synonyms. I stay away from "Study Bibles", in my experience they have the most "bad" or misleading information. Study for yourself.

Re: A serious Bible question
Modern Bible translations fall into two basic groups:

1) formal equivalency
2) dynamic equivalency

Formal equivalency attempts a word for word rendition, providing as literal a translation as possible. Dynamic equivalency is more like a paraphrase, trying to convey ideas thought by thought.

Some of the more popular formal equivalency translations:

-King James Version (KJV)
-The New King James Version (NKJV)
-The New American Standard Bible (NASB)
-English Standard Version (ESV).

The KJV is the oldest of the four and continues to be the favorite for many.

Some of the more popular dynamic equivalency translations:

-The New International Version (NIV)
-Today’s New International Version (TNIV)
-The Message (MSG)
-The Living Bible (TLB)
-The Good News Bible (GNB)
-The New Living Translation (NLT).

Of those, the NIV is the most reliable.

The Bible has a lot of interesting history. Just keep in mind that "Yahweh" was an ancient astronaut or group of astronauts. That's why they were so blood-thirsty and megalomaniacal. They were not godlike at all, but had mad skills in the technology department.

As to the legitimacy of the KJV: I've read or heard that it was actually written by the same guy who wrote the Shakespeare literature, Sir Francis Bacon. He was a freemason and put unicorns in the Bible. True story!

Mmm...bacon.

Re: A serious Bible question
One question remains, however. Is it the penultimate irony that a gay man has indirectly brought Christianity to the same bigots (of whom consist of only part of Christian thought today) who have oppressed homosexuals throughout the past 400 years and continue to do so? In 1617, James gave a daring address to the Privy Council, affirming his right to love men once and for all:

Me too.

I use all these three versions.

KJV and along with a Strong's concordance. You can then look up the original Hebrew and Greek.

In addition, I use the Amplified, and NLT.

I believe using all three, alone with the Strong's concordance, gives you a really complete and thorough understanding.

The Old testament was originally written in Hebrew so a translation from the Hebrew and including the Hebrew is possibly the best. Try JPS. The new Testament has also been translated over the centuries. The Dead Sea scrolls are alos a good study. There is bible software that is inexpensive and contains translations in many languages that will help in any research or study. Also, it might be valid to include the "Apocrapha" and Gnostic Gospels as well as the Book of Q in any full on Bible study.

What I didn't appreciate at the time was all the hidden stuff in the Bible and its origins.

KJV closely correlates to the ORIGINAL Hebrew and Greek.

The newer version bibles are Satanic and change words in verses or even omit some all together.

Re: A serious Bible question
Anybody who's ever studied another language knows how difficult it is to convey a thought accurately when translating, and it's no different with the Bible. In fact, when translating from an ancient language to a modern one, there is much room for legitimate disagreement.

Those who say the KJV is the only true Bible and slander all other translations ignore much scholarship and exhibit a spirit and attitude most unbecoming of what the version they worship teaches.

If you just want to read and do light study, I recommend any of these: KJV, NIV, NRSV, NASB, HCSB, TLB. To study, get an interlinear and a good lexicon such as the Liddell/Scott, and read some of the exchanges in the b-greek newsgroup.

Also be advised that there's no such thing as an unbiased translation. Also, some get hung up over whether it's a translation or a paraphrase. But a paraphrase does not go from one language to another; it is saying something in different words in the same language (as when we say, "In other words..."). So any Bible that goes from the original Hebrew and Greek to some other language is a translation, whether some people like it or not.
