Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27326813 Offspring of parents who lived into their 90s had significantly lower levels of 25(OH) vitamin D compared with controls (64.3 nmol/L versus 68.5 nmol/L, P=0.002), according to Diana van Heemst, PhD, of Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands, and colleagues." [link to www.medpagetoday.com] I don't believe this for one second. Ive seen plenty of studies proving otherwise. Wonder who paid this "researcher" off to publish garbage Yeah, this is an absolute crock... I have personally had low vitamin d levels in the past, and felt absolutely horrid until I got my levels back up. There's too much info, and too many studies out there that suggest the very opposite of this "research". |

There is such a thing as too much of a good thing. This correlates with what I am finding. Vitamin D3 is great stuff and probably one of the most helpful supplements you can take (magnesium is, too). But do be careful with large amounts. Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin meaning that it does accumulate in your body, unlike a water soluble vitamin such as B-12 which lasts less than week or so. 2,000 or 3,000 is plenty for most people with perhaps 5,000 in winter with less sunlight, The only times I've heard of 10,000 + being advised is if you are really sick or starting to come down with the flu. Research symptoms of Vit D3 overdose and cut back if you begin to experience any. SilverPatriot User ID: 10518597 United States 11/11/2012 08:17 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It is not a viable study for those that do no have the mutation in the CYP2R1 gene to compare Vitamin D levels and one should not rush to take this study too seriously. Cytochrome P450, family 2, subfamily R, polypeptide 1 CYP2R1: UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot: CP2R1_HUMAN, Q6VVX0 Function: Has a D-25-hydroxylase activity on both forms of vitamin D, vitamin D(2) and D(3) [link to www.genecards.org] CYP2R1 Function Vitamin D 25-hydroxylase is a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes. The cytochrome P450 proteins are monooxygenases which catalyze many reactions involved in drug metabolism and synthesis of cholesterol, steroids and other lipids. This enzyme is a microsomal vitamin D hydroxylase that converts vitamin D into 25-hydroxyvitamin D (calcidiol), which is the major circulatory form of the vitamin. Rest of Article: [link to en.wikipedia.org] Genetic evidence that the human CYP2R1 enzyme is a key vitamin D 25-hydroxylase The synthesis of bioactive vitamin D requires hydroxylation at the 1? and 25 positions by cytochrome P450 enzymes in the kidney and liver, respectively. The mitochondrial enzyme CYP27B1 catalyzes 1?-hydroxylation in the kidney but the identity of the hepatic 25-hydroxylase has remained unclear for >30 years. The inherited mutation caused the substitution of a proline for an evolutionarily conserved leucine at amino acid 99 in the CYP2R1 protein and eliminated vitamin D 25-hydroxylase enzyme activity. These data identify CYP2R1 as a biologically relevant vitamin D 25-hydroxylase and reveal the molecular basis of a human genetic disease, selective 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency. Apparently I had pretty much no D in my body and he kind of freaked out. I feel a lot better now, it has been about two weeks into the 10,000 IU's daily, can tell a real difference. I've been having a real hard time losing weight (no thyroid) and doc said it was due to the D problem, so got my fingers crossed now. I am not sure about low D being linked to long life. Correlation does not equal causation, but maybe there is a defining factor that links the two. It would be interesting to understand that link if it exists.
