Yes, it's toxic but can be contained and cleaned up as soon as the company makes an effort and stops hoping for a cover-up by their bought-and-paid-for Center-party politicians. On Friday, recorded according to the measurement of water leakage contained uranium would kill more than half a million people. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27610315 [link to translate.google.fi] Radiation measurements published on Friday, show that on Wednesday 7.11. Talvivaara measured water discharges three kilometers from the spill area exceed seven times the WHO limits set by the act. The concentrations of uranium have risen rapidly. [link to translate.google.fi] There was a NUKE icon on the disaster map yesterday in Finland and when you clicked on the link for details, nothing showed up, i was hoping something would come up on GLP about the incident. ehecatl User ID: 27466874 Mexico 11/13/2012 09:45 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Arigato Fuku shill. You play both sides of the sword. I'm a career physicist so I thought I'd comment on this. The hysteria in this thread (and in our media) is getting out of all proportion. Quoting: JamesOblivion That is not to say that this is a totally harmless leak. Uranium is a toxic metal and this leak will have to be cleaned up. The radiological danger is, however, greatly exaggerated by the media and militant Greens. Firstly, it's not pure Uranium (U) that's pouring out. It's watery sludge that contains trace amounts of U. Secondly, it is U isotope 238 (U238), meaning that the radiological hazard is small. U238 is the most common U isotope in the soil. It's everywhere! It is an alpha-emitter (i.e. it emits Helium nuclei without the two electrons usually associated with He), meaning that as long as you don't drink it, eat it or get it under your skin or into your lungs, it's harmless. It does not penetrate or damage skin. You can hold an alpha emitter in your hand or wear it on a necklace for your entire life, and it won't harm you. U238 does not emit the more energetic and penetrating beta-radiation (bad), gamma-radiation (worse) or neutrons (worst), nor does it spontaneously transform into more radioactive isotopes within our lifetime (its half-life is 4.468 billion years). U238 cannot start or sustain a chain reaction even at bulk concentrations, so there is absolutely no chance of a runaway nuclear reaction. Radiologically the danger is equivalent to living in a house built on soil that releases radioactive Radon-gas (222Rn is also an alpha-emitter) - a common practice in Finland. In such a house, a simple precaution like good ventilation takes care of it. Outdoors the dose is negligible. Smoking exposes you to more radiation. On the other hand, U238 is a toxic heavy metal. This is the main danger in the leak. The good news is that as such it is easy to filter out from drinking water (normal water purification plants deal with it) and clean up by soil removal. It is also readily absorbed by the soil, meaning that the Uranium won't travel far from the site. Furthermore, since the leak is far away from dense population and ground water areas (=drinking water), it is well contained. The only real fallout from this incident is political and economical. This sounds like the classic shill play for the industry. Presenting just one view with no balance. It is all generally true, except it is overlooking that thing about ingesting, and the problems that can arise from that. That is what Japanese, US and Canadian populations are looking forward to in long-term after effects of Fukushima fallout. These types of radioactive conditions might show up clearly statistically but a heavy handed government perception management program may keep these sorts of things under wraps. It may not be a serious as melt-down releases into the atmosphere from reactors, but those waters and their outflow are probably off limits for healthy swimming, fishing, or drinking, unless they can implement some effective remediation effort. IMO, not "the end of the world" and the effects are isolated, but it is still serious, and the whole industry needs to be shut down in the interests of life on earth. |

Problem is, the protocols are now established so that any nuclear event such as this will be quickly silenced.. You wont hear about it again. Basically its a coverup, to protect the image of the nuclear industry, and to some extent prevent public disorder and panic. So there you go. you dont have a right to know. |
