The full petition text: Mr. President, new States could be created, unemployment would fall and extra tax revenue would flow into our Treasury. The purchase cost could be offset by auctioning land to investors. Collateral benefits would be increased economic activity worldwide. Infrastructure would need to be built and private investors would look forward to developing the land. The stock market would boom and taxes collected would give a surplus vs. deficit. Our returning military could secure the new land. Finally, in the spirit of Ellis Island immigrants, offer U.S Citizenship to any who chose to participate in the building of this new land. The people of Mexico would have to decide if such an offering was in their interests and this petition, if approved, is limited only to making an offer to Mexico. |

Quoting: - 27605885 The wages are going to continue to drop and economy suffer as a result due to open borders and globalization. Thats one possibility though I see investors buying much of the land to develop. The rich have to have a reason to invest, which drives growth. Knowing the Feds are going to be working on infrastructure - more construction - will easily appeal to most any person. More working = more tax revenue. Immigration 'problem' is solved because anyone in the USA up to that point is granted citizenship, which turns them into working taxpayers instead of illegal non-taxpayers. But I suppose the atmosphere is not currently conducive to a positive step in a direction which addresses many problems from one action. |

Then 5 years later, we annex Sonora, and so on. Quoting: Factual Error Well... I suppose that is always an option though I do not think it would help relations to be seen as getting into 'another war'. Just make an offer to Mexico... for all the land from the 22nd parallel northwards. Far more peaceful and productive that way. |

It puts the border near Guadalajara and would include all of Baja California. Frankly I think it would be disasterous since all those Mexicans would immediately apply for welfare or some other assistance, which the lib.s would handout in return for their vote. The end result is the entire country becoming Mexico, rather than Mexico becoming the US. I would be better to buy off Canada, though not for them. With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible |

Lest we not forget - auctioning off the newly acquired land to investors would reclaim the purchase cost. Wonder how much one would pay for the tip of Baja California? Hmm.. Some investor would pay hansomely in an auction-style bid war. Lets take a guess that 20 million Mexicans decided to stay in the newly acquired land. By staying they are saying they want to be Citizens and are granted citizenship with a SSN/Welfare etc. There will be so many jobs for decades building up the land/States that most will have jobs. So I disagree it would be a disaster. It would be a boom for both all involved and the stock market/investors/world suppliers of equipment. No doubt it would spur economic activity off the charts. |

The investors looking for 'growth' would see opportunity and bid in an auction for plots of land. Thats how most if not all of the purchase price is recovered. With construction comes economic activity. With economic activity you have JOBS and GROWTH and MONEY for workers. What is so strange about that? |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27162552 If the US POTUS went to the Mexican President with the simple question of "Hey - we would like to know if you would be interested in selling to us some of your land", then of course the answer could be yes or no. Then it would be up the Mexican President to put it to the people of his country. In 1960, the USA bought Alaska from Russia for $7 million. It is not like the USA has not done this peacefully before. |

Russia in 1960 sold for $7 Million what we now know as Alaska to the USA. Since then we have an entire oil/gas industry up there. With that land the USA could create several new States and build that up, funded by investors paying for the land just like any other real estate purchase. Starting to get the idea nobody wants a positive win-win-win for all involved. |

You libs are lovely. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27797414 Whaaa... no no no. Texas has nothing to do with this. Petition is to prompt nObama to go to Mexican President and ask 'How much for your land from 22nd parallel north?'. Of course that would get a yes or no answer. If the Mexican President said YES then he would have to put it to the Mexican people for final authorization. Just think - Texas would no longer be the southern border.. |
