Not to take anything away from Gerald Celente, but Buckminster Fuller and Jacque Fresco, as well as many others have been saying it for decades.

Oh I agree, Celente can be a little over the top at times. However, he did predict people would trend back toward quality, over quantity.

He's right on the money, people are growing weary of this consumerist life.

I'll never forget my first day of Marketing 101 my professor told us this same thing.

How she had worked at top fortune 500 companies that specifically direct engineers and manufacturers to make products that last x number of years based upon a desired marketing and profit horizon. "They don't make 'em like they used to for a reason" she said.

The concept was sadly on 95% of the class, but, a few of us 'got it.'

If Microsoft made a bug free, anti hack, no need to upgrade OS, the first time, we'd never have an industry of techs and stores that fix them.

Designed to fail, for financial reasons. If they made it perfect, they would go out of business.

I plan to continue to use incandescent light bulbs---they are cheaper, provide heat, don't hurt my eyes, and aren't dangerous if they break. I've been buying up a stock since they are so cheap now, in anticipation of them not being available in future. Studies have shown that energy saving bulbs do NOT save the energy they claim to. It was just a ploy to get people to buy something new.

People are somewhat at fault, as well. Scratch on the washing machine? Gotta get a new one. Toaster broke, crack in an appliance? Instead of fixing it, most buy a new one.

I've been waging a war against consumerism for a couple years now. Planned obsolescence was talked about back in the 1960's! I keep everything in good repair, and when I do have to replace something, I check out the second hand stores first. Amazing how many times I've found just what I needed, still new in the box. If I can’t pay cash, I don’t buy it. If I can make do without something, I don’t buy it.

What I hate is having to upgrade the computer and software so often. That gets expensive!

Our need to have the latest, flashiest "stuff" (remember George Carlin?), has resulted in huge landfills. Some people never even consider giving their used goods to a second hand store, which is too bad. People could use it, and often can't afford to buy new.

I drive a 12 year old car because it still works. I have the cheapest cell phone in the world, my computer is about 8 years old, works just fine, and I buy used stuff whenever possible. A little thought about what we're buying goes a long way. Oh yeah, I could give a crap about whether people think I'm affluent or not.

I could not agree more. Ask the average idiot what they would do in a a carrington event, given that we have a 1 in 8 chance between now and 2020, and they just look at you like: "what? no NFL? no seXbox?"

Zero concern for HOW they would feed themselves or their family.

i used to sen my used stuff to goodwill. i stopped because...

1. they are picky as hell now about what they will and wont take.

2. many times they price items higher than what i could or did buy the item for new.

other places are a pita to donate to because they are picky or have limited times and/or locations.

and no, i don't take them trash. used crt's that work, printers, clothes, bedding... they want to dig through piece by piece... take it all or dont take any!

i just post these items on my facebook now and give people a week to come get it. otherwise it goes to the dump. half the time someone wants something on facebook they expect delivery and set up.
