The problem with the younger generation of guitarists (ie. many of the metalheads) is that they think speed and difficulty is everything. It's all flash. Where's the innovation???

I fucking love metal but Randy Rhodes and Dimebag Darrel were the last of a dying breed. Everyone else seems to just see guitar like their ability to play means they deserve more recognition. After a few solos, everything starts to sound the same. There's rarely anything recognizable enough to distinguish one shredder from another. Music is about delivery, not showing off.

I tried to pick a #1 (living) guitarist, but everything I rationalized always came out to personal favorites. I want to say James Hetfield (obviously, not for playing ability) because of his influence on the last couple decades of metal, but at the same time, Van Halen, Page and Clapton are still alive and rank highly by the same standard.

Steve Vai is the world's best and most influential modern rock guitarist, he rewrote the book about 30 years ago, everyone's been emulating him ever since. This tune made a lot of cats give up the guitar, made a lot of cats pick it up.

Saw someone named Phillip(??) (I think...been a while), do this live at philharmonic performance in Dallas. Mannheim Steamroller was the concert.

Satch is my all time favorite. He has covered all styles in his many years of playing and teaching. He also taught Kirk Hammett as well as many others.

Haven't read the entire thread but Tony Iommi deserves major respect for the insane amount of amazing riffs he has given the rock world

There are a lot of different styles of guitar, but all around most talented guitar player alive is Derek Trucks hands down.

I saw him play live with Eric Clapton, Eric couldn't keep the grin off his face when Derek busted out his solo. I don't know many that can hold a flame to him that aren't already dead.

Joe is a beast. I've got an Ibanez Satriani in black pearl.
