Western Washington here. Just so you all know, it's not raining any more then normal. In fact this fall and early Winter has been quiet for the Seattle and Portland regions. Hell, haven't even lost power and just 2 wind storms. And they weren't even decent ones. Besides I hear California and the south west need the rain.

In the Pacific Northwest, we don't worry until the 9th straight day of rain.

I'm in the Sacramento Valley north of Sacramento and it terrible. I had to put on a baseball cap today when I went out.

This is nothing but a series of winter storms and thank God for them. We are in the middle of a drought.

Since Thursday we've had just under 3" at my house and expect about the same through Sunday. So yeah, it's a nice series of storms but 6" over a week is not an Ark Storm..lolol

I know what you mean. It's very dry there but just a few miles to the west is the crest of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, which causes all the moist air from the Pacific Ocean to drop its rain (and snow). So Reno sometimes is deluged with run-off from large storms, even though it is a generally dry desert area.

I lived in Seattle for a few years in the 1970's and one time it rained from mid-October to July 4, almost steady. Sometimes it would stop raining for a few hours but the sun didn't come out the ENTIRE time and everything was wet and gray for months. Gawd.

PNW here as well. Was just looking at the sat image and am more interested in the low developing off shore. If it gets organized before coming in that could be the wind storm we have been waiting for here. Generally get a couple heavy wind storms and we havent yet.

Hope your all safe in Reno. I imagine its like I've seen on Discovery. These high volume storms create a lot of run off the normally dry desert just cant absorb quickly enough.

Don't forget in the Winter months it's dark by 4pm and not light until 8am. Of course light is relative, when there is no sun.

I remember one time, maybe in about 1989 to 1990, there was large windstorms after windstorms. From mid November until Mid January. I remember people from the area driving to Oregon to buy generators.

I think she ants to know the cause, heavy rains swelling rivers and lakes and there lies your answer.

Having little idea of sea level measurments taken over yearly or per decade might reveal olif there is a definite rise and if said rise will continue.

Also alot of sea ice also broke up very recently and hugemongous quantities were dispersed into the seas, warranting another cause for the reason there will be flooding.

Global rainfalls and record floods have been breaking news across over at least the last five years or so.

Inwonder if things like corexit and oil could errode the ice mass and my question would be what caused the ice caps to break off in such large quantities?

I also wonder just how much marine life has been affected by our mistakes, but I digress...

As you were!

Re: Reno declares state of emergency
As a Reno resident, I can verify that in the last 16 months we have had a TOTAL of about 3 inches of rain. Total. Yes, it is a desert. I would not be surprised if we get more than our whole annual rainfall from this series of storms. Yes, it's windy as hell, too.
We do have the Truckee river here which is fed by Lake Tahoe, and there is a very high chance that it will flood. And, if it's a very wet winter with a few warm storms, well, a lot of businesses and some homes may get pretty trashed.
Generally our water is held in snowpack until it gradually melts in summer, but warm storms will melt that stuff rightaway. This next storm will rain at near 9,000 feet which means much of our early snow may melt, and add to the water volume.
Should be an interesting week....

I am thinking about starting another topic, but here goes, Where IS it safer to live?
I know that no where is safe from a random tornado, or lightning, but personally, I am planning-on moving. And I cannot head for the hills too high because I have been living at sea-level for so many years that I would have breathing problems at a higher altitude.
SAFE places, not those corny TETOWOKI maps, just using common sense and maybe some flood maps.
