Svalbard is special type of DMZ. There is normal people there who work and send their children to school. Never been there myself, but it is last outpost that's for sure, better for armies to stay on the fastland and neither freeze or starve. Not Seed Bank. Defending northern frontier.

Please help me understand. As an American, if I think of a DMZ - I think of the DMZ between South and North Korea. The war between South and North Korea never really ended...there is only a war stoppage. Is the DMZ between Norway and Russia similar to that - is there still some sort of declared war between Norway and Russia?

Norway's border with Russia is only about 50 miles across and it's in the middle of nowhere.

Why is this strategically important? The entire country of Finland borders Russia and Sweden is on the other side.

Russian mechanized infantry brigades are heavy in
a) artilery elements
b) combat elements (with 5 combat battalions)

They are very low in reccon elements. This kind of brigades are ideal for peacekeeping or defensive operations, having little to no value in offensive operations (low to no recon elements, and limited mobility artilery, with long setup times).

The only strategic thing in this area (to my little knowledge) is the gas pipeline project to the Shtockman field.

Didnt the norwegians do something radical and moce against euro centric control? Maybe Russia is there to support Norway if they were to be attacked???

A brigade isn't diddly squat. You don't invade a country with a brigade. A dozen brigades and you might have an invasion force.

They can take all of them.
