If you smoke every day it's an addiction.
Point.
Good thing to quit and then go after the reasons for your addiction.

Its physically Impossible to get addicted to weed
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28979488

No, what you mean is its impossible to get physically addicted to it. It's extremely common to be psychologically addicted to it. That's just as valid an addiction.
Out of this ugliness may come,
Some day, so beautiful a flower,
That men will wonder at that hour,
Remembering smoke and flowerless slum,
And ask-glimpsing the agony
Of the slaves who wrestle to be free-
'But why were all the poets dumb?'

So many gods, so many creeds,
So many paths that wind and wind,
While just the art of being kind
Is all the sad world needs.

Re: quitting weed after 5 years of daily use/abuse
For me its been just the opposite... like everyone I occasionally smoked cannabis in my youth which I gave up when I married. In my early 50's I developed mid-life anxiety, I suspect it was some undealt with post-traumatic distress disorder which I couldn't overcome on my own... So I went to my doctor who immediately put me on Zannax. After 30 days of that I was really messed up, strange sleep paterns... Sleep all day & pace the floor all night, you know. Anyway, my best friend suggested cannabis in the evening prior to going to bed to help with the sleep issue. That was about 6 years ago and since that day, no Zannax or any other prescription poison for me.

For me, Cannabis has been a very powerful anti-psychotic in that it reduced the fear & anxiety without dulling me as a human being like most narcotics (zannax) do. Cannabis has allowed me to forget the traumatic event my mind was stuck on which in turn reduced the anxiety. I figure I could quit anytime but since in my mind I feel I'm still benefiting I will continue to use cannabis.

If the time comes where I feel that the benefits no longer outweigh whatever I'm stressing over I think I will be able to quit with little trouble. There is a lot of us old guys out there who have been using cannabis for years to make our lives better, many of us take break form time to time only to return once again to God's remedy.

Thanks for allowing me to share, good luck with your decision to quit, just remember nothing lasts forever.

But, but, but I thought it wasn't a drug?
 Quoting: BRIEF

I don't care if you smoke it, snort it, stick it, or shove it up your a$$ it's a drug .. heard that from a drug counselor who shot his crack dealer seven years before ..

Really I smoke weed daily, and am mentally addicted .. and I know some people it doesn't help, but like any pharmaceutical it should be dx and dispensed correctly to people who need it ..

I have a choice, do I pop 2 of the 6mgs of xanax they give me a day .. or do I smoke a joint .. I will go with the joint .. I know xanax is addictive, I have had withdrawl symptoms coming off of it, and could easily dying coming off, or OD pretty damn easy .. for someone with ptsd, and being impulsive you think they'd give me a bag of weed first ..

With the PTSD I have, I am lucky to attend a social function or walk into a chain store with a lot of suspicious looking people around(in my head) .. I couldn't even get the few hours of sleep a night .. marijuana has made me live a more comfortable life ..

I am glad OP you decided to stop .. any drug is no good for you .. but I do believed if you are DX correctly this is a drug that is more then beneficial ..

It took me awhile to recognize that I was addicted.

Judging by some of the strong responses I would say some others are addicted as well but in denial.

I remember the first time i smoked i didnt even get high. The second time tho i got super baked. It was in that second experience that i recognized how powerful the herb was. Had the time of my life. It started once in awhile, then once a month, then every friday and weekend, then everyday before school.

This was in highschool. Now when I smoke I just get relaxed and its just a habit to smoke if somethings bugging me and I want to feel relaxed.

I will break the habit though.

I still think weed has healing properties but like anything else, when abused it can be destructive. I learned the hard way but now I know.

Well, here is one problem for you: you started smoking in high school. So that, what, makes you 23 at the most? You shouldn't be smoking every day simply because of your age. Your brain is still developing. Let it alone until you're 25, then smoke again. And try sativa, rather than indica, strains. Indica sticks you on the couch; sativa opens your mind.

AND you are NOT addicted. Marijuana is NOT addictive. It is HABIT-FORMING, but it IS. NOT. ADDICTIVE. You do not have physical withdrawal symptoms of any note. If this were true, America could be full of people running around in absolute pain every time their supply ran dry for three or four days. Addicts will commit crimes and let other people put their stinking penises in their mouths for money.

Have you ever contemplated sucking a 300lb man's cock in a parked car in a garage or some shit?? Have you contemplated beating an old woman's head in so you can maybe get enough money for a bump?

No? Then you are not addicted.

Have you been wracked with bone-breaking bouts of shivering, nausea, cramps, paranoia, anxiety, asking God to kill you? Fevers, diahrrea? No?

Well, then, you just have a mild weed habit.

You are not on a "path to recovery." Don't pity yourself and think that quitting weed is anything like quitting painkillers or crack or heroin. Pot heads don't "recover," they simply quit. Anyone who has gone through rehab would read your little story and laugh until they had shit stains in their pants.

Sorry for the harsh response. But kid, you're just a weed smoker, pot head, crispy critter. No different than tens of millions of others who've gone down the path. Quitting pot? Go ahead. But don't blow your pot problems out of proportion.

This is an absolutely disgraceful thread.

Cannabis is NOT a drug.

It CAN be medicinal.

It doesn't ruin your life.

It is mind-expanding and fun.

It should be used in moderation.

You should NOT feel guilty for using it.

If we all use cannabis, the world would be a much better place.

I went thru my xannax prescription super fast...addictive personality i guess... after two weeks of zoloft and xannax and an Insane emotional rollercoaster i quit what the doc gave me and went back to weed. Looking back i cant believe how fast my doc suggested zoloft and xannax. Im no longer with that doctor anymore

It's not so much withdrawal you need to worry about as this is not a drug that will cause physical W/D beyond psychological agitation, it's the long term increased risk of psychosis.

You guys are seriously pathetic...

Wanna know what has been exponentially more harmful than the weed you have been smoking?

THE GUILT YOU PUT ON YOURSEL FOR DOING IT.

Crack heads, speed freaks, and heroine junkies "lose" their families, not fucking pot smokers.

Also, from what I can see of these posts here, if it wasn't weed, it would have been something else.
"Something else" being some other obsessive and/or compulsive behaviour you would have found, instead of weed.

That lack of self control is what has poisoned your mind, self respect, and perceptions. In your ignorance though, you are now blaming a fucking PLANT for your problems and failures, and not the thing actually responsible... YOU!

You need to figure out why this pattern of behaviour exists in your life and especially why you, a grown ass man, doesnt have the testicular fortitude to not feel guilty about the things he does.
Because I have sad news for you, quitting weed will not fix your problems. Without figuring out the root cause for your patterns of behaviour, you WILL only end up replacing weed with something else. It might be a shitty relationship that sucks your soul out or another type of addiction.

The temporary happiness you feel after u quit smoking grass will vanish after the void it leaves behind goes unfilled. You'll then fill that void with something else unconciously, and the guilt and self loathing will return, only now you'll be blaming beanie babies, world of warcraft, fatty foods, or the shitty relationship your stuck in.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 12848291

My theory is if your friends are that unsupportive of your weed use, either cut it out of the daily convo or cut the friend out of your life. One friend gets the edited version of my life so as to keep the peace. My dad is supportive of my stepmom no matter what and agrees the weed is much safer than any of the back pain meds that would destroy her and are way more addicting. Then i have my own close people saying im an addict when i dont necessarily agree. To hell with that. if they cant be supportive it is about time to move on and make new friends/relationships. ive spent a great deal of my life people pleasing and there is a point where i had to draw a line in the sand.

I have been smoking spliff every single day since I was 15 and I am now 25.

The longest I went without a spiff in 10 years was for 2 days when on a business trip.

The one negative aspect that i know it has caused is a lack of ambition with regards to my social life. I would much rather get blazed and watch an awesome documentary with my girlfriend than to make an effort to see friends and socialize more often.. (beer at the pub, party at a club/house etc)

Most of my friends are all sheep, so the chit chat is all small talk and nothing meaning full and real. For this reason, over the months iv kinda just done what i want to do, and that is, Go to work, come home, smoke a bong, and chill!

However, by doing this, i dont have any enthusiasm to do anything like meet new people, start up conversations, generally being more socially confident etc.

I also dont really have much of a vision for my future, I live each day as it comes, and spend my cash on things that make me happy instead of saving up for the future.

When I think about it, I blame the weed and wonder if I would be a better, more popular person if i hadnt been so withdrawn from being stoned all the time but i know that its not the weeds fault.

Its different for everybody,In my case, I have issues, and the weed suppresses them and basically just brushes the issues under the carpet so i dont think about things that worry me.

I remember thinking this when i was 21, "you should stop soon, and start your life" but then i would look up to my boss (also a daily smoker) and he lived life like any other person would. For the past 3 years iv been saying "its cool, smoke a splif but work on your issues, stoping wont make everything fall into place, so I may as well keep smoking, but force myself to do the things i wouldnt really want to do. But then its just a never ending cycle, "I should stop, atleast for 1 week to see what its like to be clear minded" "Nahh, get blazed, just make sure you wash the dishes and clean up the flat as well and its all good!"

Smoked my last bud last night, wondering if I should get some more before going home.... I know what those nights are like when scavenging for crums and tossing and turning until 4 am for 4 nights..

Bahh!!

Same here, although i smoked for 23 years.

I am actually a dutch fella from Amsterdam so i always lived closeby numerous coffeshops.

Im 42 now, move to paris and just had a baby girl.

Half of my life i've been high/stoned/bakes/grilled, and now it's time for my other half to be sober.

Re: quitting weed after 5 years of daily use/abuse
I have did the tests and went to the doctor while medicated on cannabis. There is no problem to be found. Went there like four times. No problem with me. Doctor found no problem.

Then I decided to see if the doctor can help me the way cannabis is helping me, so I decided to stop for a few days. Then I went to the doctor and guess what? the doctor told me that she has never seen me like this before in a psychotic state. Well, I just spoke loud, did not give her her times to speak, and I spoke alot. She thought I was psychotic, but still had to prove it.

So I decided to smoke weed again, so to be calm. My next visit to the doctor was after two weeks, and by this time I was continuously medicated. Then she asked what happened last time, because now I am perfectly normal.

I told the doctor its the cannabis, the best medicine that I've used.

So there is a small prove that Cannabis cures psychosis.

Besides, there are lots of people fighting wars killing oneanother, they are psychotic.

Let them smoke cannabis and psychosis will be erased and the world will be a better place.

peace

Bahh!!

Great reply! Ive been up all night so far... and its still day 1.... everyone says its easy to quit but it def has withdrawl symptoms. Hardest part is im in cali and all my peers smoke 24/7. Turning them down when they ask if i want a bowl sucks. Of course i want it but im tryin to quit, those basturds and their temptation!

If you smoke every day it's an addiction.
Point.
Good thing to quit and then go after the reasons for your addiction.

I learned the hard way but now I know.

wait, wait, wait! now it is five years later and you are out of high school and have not accomplished a lot and lost a lot of friends and think the pot is the main culprit?

step 1) enroll in college
Step 2) attend all classes, apply for fafsa upon enrollment
step 3) dont quit the pot just use with responsibility. Motivation is not the biggest weak link here it is the lack of motivation due to seeing your friends leave you behind at the end of high school. I dont see how pot has anything to do with this because this happened to all my friends and none were really into pot during those firat five years out of high school.

Ya get out of high school and it is kinda a cluster fuck. People leave the area to get away from family and even friends or exgfs/bfs. I think in your pot haze you were looking at this from the wrong angle. Moderation as some others suggested. But anyways, why not enroll in some classes, meet new friends! even if you have no intentions of using the degree, or even getting a degree. The years after high school are, without a doubt, the most tumultuous. If you spent them high it might be easy to blame the pot but those friends might have been long gone either way.

But, but, but I thought it wasn't a drug?

I have to remember to take my cannabis oil every day, so have no idea how someone would have difficulty stopping it. But some folks abuse Tagamet, so anything is possible :D
I skipped two weeks once for some heart tests and did not notice a thing, other than my legs hurt worse.

[don't want to upset anyone but i'm afraid cannabis is the drug the mental health drs hate the most.

That's because they can't make any money prescribing it, and rehab is big business. Without kids going to rehab and them raking in the parent's insurance money, most of the docs would be out of business.

By the government's own admission, 37% of people admitted to treatment centers for marijuana addiction said they hadn't used marijuana in the month prior to their admission. On top of that, another 16% used it either once, twice, or three times in the month prior to entering rehab. In addition, only 15% of admissions are voluntary – the majority are the work of criminal courts, and the remainder are presumably juveniles sent by their parents."

Something helpful for OP-CBD oil. No THC, NO high at all, eliminates all cravings for weed. Available at your local dispensary. Why hasn't anyone mentioned this, go get some. NOT the kind with the THC in it, defeats the point. The nonpsychoactive. Taper from there painlessly.

"Investigators reported that the oral administration of 10 mg of THC was associated with various physiological and behavioral effects – such as increased heart rate and sedation – whereas the oral administration of 600 mg of CBD was not.

They concluded, “There were no differences between CBD and placebo on any symptomatic, physiological variable. … In healthy volunteers, THC has marked acute behavioral and physiological effects, whereas CBD has proven to be safe and well tolerated
