Re: quitting weed after 5 years of daily use/abuse
If you smoke every day it's an addiction.
Point.
Good thing to quit and then go after the reasons for your addiction.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28983524

It took me awhile to recognize that I was addicted.

Judging by some of the strong responses I would say some others are addicted as well but in denial.

I remember the first time i smoked i didnt even get high. The second time tho i got super baked. It was in that second experience that i recognized how powerful the herb was. Had the time of my life. It started once in awhile, then once a month, then every friday and weekend, then everyday before school.

This was in highschool. Now when I smoke I just get relaxed and its just a habit to smoke if somethings bugging me and I want to feel relaxed.

I will break the habit though.

I still think weed has healing properties but like anything else, when abused it can be destructive. I learned the hard way but now I know.

wait, wait, wait! now it is five years later and you are out of high school and have not accomplished a lot and lost a lot of friends and think the pot is the main culprit?

step 1) enroll in college
Step 2) attend all classes, apply for fafsa upon enrollment
step 3) dont quit the pot just use with responsibility. Motivation is not the biggest weak link here it is the lack of motivation due to seeing your friends leave you behind at the end of high school. I dont see how pot has anything to do with this because this happened to all my friends and none were really into pot during those firat five years out of high school.

Ya get out of high school and it is kinda a cluster fuck. People leave the area to get away from family and even friends or exgfs/bfs. I think in your pot haze you were looking at this from the wrong angle. Moderation as some others suggested. But anyways, why not enroll in some classes, meet new friends! even if you have no intentions of using the degree, or even getting a degree. The years after high school are, without a doubt, the most tumultuous. If you spent them high it might be easy to blame the pot but those friends might have been long gone either way.

Yeah highschool ending sucked for me. Graduating class of under 100 people, all close friends, then poof, everyone's gone. I originally got into a university but dropped out after my first semester after partying for the whole time.

Such great insights from you guys, seriously, thank you!

Good luck, pick up an alternate hobby to fill the void.

Exercise is the best alternative, however - to each their own.

Your biggest problem is going to be idle hands...

Well, here is one problem for you: you started smoking in high school. So that, what, makes you 23 at the most? You shouldn't be smoking every day simply because of your age. Your brain is still developing. Let it alone until you're 25, then smoke again. And try sativa, rather than indica, strains. Indica sticks you on the couch; sativa opens your mind.

AND you are NOT addicted. Marijuana is NOT addictive. It is HABIT-FORMING, but it IS. NOT. ADDICTIVE. You do not have physical withdrawal symptoms of any note. If this were true, America could be full of people running around in absolute pain every time their supply ran dry for three or four days. Addicts will commit crimes and let other people put their stinking penises in their mouths for money.

Have you ever contemplated sucking a 300lb man's cock in a parked car in a garage or some shit?? Have you contemplated beating an old woman's head in so you can maybe get enough money for a bump?

No? Then you are not addicted.

Have you been wracked with bone-breaking bouts of shivering, nausea, cramps, paranoia, anxiety, asking God to kill you? Fevers, diahrrea? No?

Well, then, you just have a mild weed habit.

You are not on a "path to recovery." Don't pity yourself and think that quitting weed is anything like quitting painkillers or crack or heroin. Pot heads don't "recover," they simply quit. Anyone who has gone through rehab would read your little story and laugh until they had shit stains in their pants.

Sorry for the harsh response. But kid, you're just a weed smoker, pot head, crispy critter. No different than tens of millions of others who've gone down the path. Quitting pot? Go ahead. But don't blow your pot problems out of proportion.
 Quoting: Spine monkey

Really? So I must assume you don't believe in tobacco addiction either? Even though its one of the biggest killers, and even when people are dying and struggling to breathe they often still can't quit? Yet it produces none of the effects you describe, so therefor its not a legit addiction?

Get off your high horse and stop trying to belittle other peoples issues mate. You sound like a pretentious elitist.
Out of this ugliness may come,
Some day, so beautiful a flower,
That men will wonder at that hour,
Remembering smoke and flowerless slum,
And ask-glimpsing the agony
Of the slaves who wrestle to be free-
'But why were all the poets dumb?'
-William Montgomerie

So many gods, so many creeds,
So many paths that wind and wind,
While just the art of being kind
Is all the sad world needs.

What??? I'm trying to counsel this kid not to get so distraught over a measly pot smoking habit. Tobacco produces some of the effects I've listed--but the point was about the category that marijuana is in. The kid is talking about being addicted to something that is so far down the list of "things that have very bad consequences when you try to quit" that it is silly. I didn't mention alcohol either, did I? Or sugar?

So, please, leave YOUR high horse pretentiousness tied up outside the saloon.

The kid needs to recognize, move on, and not blame his problems on pot. That's the point, as I think many others here have said.

You ever been in rehab? Hmmmm???

48 hours

It's been about 2 days so far since I smoked. Been offered to smoke countless times already and just keep denying the offer. This part is pretty difficult. It is so readily available that I can't distance myself from it, I just have to remain strong in my resolve to quit. I let my friends know its the weed I'm trying to get away from, not them. Some have taken it personally, like I don't accept them anymore or something, while others don't take offense to it.

I noticed I have an abundance of energy now. Crazy bursts of rage and anger. I just want to scream to let it out. I've started lifting weights again whenever I get these surges of power. I lift for awhile then feel defeated almost and then I find something else to do.

Also have a ton of time on my hands. The house is already 10x cleaner then it was before. Been walking the dog and visiting my family.

I suck at video games now. I can't sit around and play them 24/7 anymore. I get bored of them much faster then before, I can maybe play for a hour or so before I have to get up and do something else.

Appetite is sort of gone. Only eating one large meal a day. Asked my friends about this and they said it will return soon enough.

Been thinking about how I have lived my life the last several years and really re-assessing things.

Anyway that's all I have to say, Hope this helps someone out there.

Remember, if you have been using weed to self medicate any issue, that issue will now be evident.

slight aside-One risk for heavy smokers who have a seizure disorder, is that reducing their cannabis consumption may also require an adjustment (increase) in their seizure meds. The same for bipolar individuals. Of course pain and inflammation will return. If there is autoimmune disease stopping suddenly puts the sufferer at risk of flare.

I was in your shoes and have been clean for 20 years now. Even today I can't believe the destruction is caused in my life.

Do yourself a favor and get to an NA meeting EVERY DAY. I assume you have admitted that you are powerless over pot and that your life has become unmanageable. Next step is to believe that a power greater than yourself (Jesus Christ) can restore you to sanity.

I've smoked for 41 years.Had a career, raised a family, got a degree, a martial arts black belt, built a house. etc.
Had a normal relatively success full life, while being stoned most of the time. You move on from the slacking stoner thing, as it gets boring pretty soon. I know lots of successful people who are smokers, but I also know people who fell by the wayside. Those that have issues on dope have issues regardless in my experience. My only recommendation is that if you don't have robust mental health then avoid it.
Its also not good for your lungs in the long run, as is any smoking. The biggest danger has always been its illegality.
But the way it enhances the experience of eating, having sex, and listening to music makes it worthwhile.
Now if you'll excuse me, I think I'll head out to the shed for a few cones.
Not quite extinct!!!!!!!!

Quit it,

but let others know what good it helped you with.
how it did heal your depression stress and everyday pains, and how you don't get it anymore after 5 years of being on the weed medication.

Tell them how the herb medication works.

If they all knew it were a medicine then they would be you family and friends. But because thinking weed is bad, makes your whole life bad.

Weed is Good, and Heals your pains faster than other chemist drugs. Weed should be used by more people to see what they missing. As for me, I don't smoke weed, as it healed what multiple doctors could not cure.

So to help other suffering an illness,

Smoke WEED and be Free

bonghit

peace

Yes. I smoked in college and drank until 26. John Barley Corn was going to kill me so by God's grace I quit both and became anti-weed. About 7 years ago or so I get ill and developed a neurological disorder that causes vertigo, nausea, IBS and an imbalance causing the use of a walking cane.

The doctors had me on anti-seizure and anti-migraine medication.....the meds were crap made me feel like crap and the condition was not really any better. About 5 years ago I start using weed for the condition after it ws mentioned on a vertigo/migraine board.

The stuff kills vertigo, nausea and IBS cold in its tracks. As a side benefit at 55, my eye doc says my eye pressure is perfect in both eyes.

What is so bad about all that from a friggin weed? I waged a stupid war on weed because everyone else was.

Weed will not kill you or others but alcohol will!

You guys are seriously pathetic...

Wanna know what has been exponentially more harmful than the weed you have been smoking?

THE GUILT YOU PUT ON YOURSEL FOR DOING IT.

Crack heads, speed freaks, and heroine junkies "lose" their families, not fucking pot smokers.

Also, from what I can see of these posts here, if it wasn't weed, it would have been something else.
"Something else" being some other obsessive and/or compulsive behaviour you would have found, instead of weed.

That lack of self control is what has poisoned your mind, self respect, and perceptions. In your ignorance though, you are now blaming a fucking PLANT for your problems and failures, and not the thing actually responsible... YOU!

You need to figure out why this pattern of behaviour exists in your life and especially why you, a grown ass man, doesnt have the testicular fortitude to not feel guilty about the things he does.
Because I have sad news for you, quitting weed will not fix your problems. Without figuring out the root cause for your patterns of behaviour, you WILL only end up replacing weed with something else. It might be a shitty relationship that sucks your soul out or another type of addiction.

The temporary happiness you feel after u quit smoking grass will vanish after the void it leaves behind goes unfilled. You'll then fill that void with something else unconciously, and the guilt and self loathing will return, only now you'll be blaming beanie babies, world of warcraft, fatty foods, or the shitty relationship your stuck in.

I have left my friends family and life for weed and am now on the path of recovery. I have tried to quit before and relapsed multiple times. It all started out of curiosity of why do my friends use it? It was almost like a science project at first in that I wanted to know why. Now I understand how hard it is to quit and I feel that it is time to begin healing myself and others. After over 5 years of use, it is time to HEAL.

Here is something you might want to try. When quitting weed buy a nice cigar (not those shit ones in a box) and in the morning have a cup of coffee and a few drags off of a quality cigar. It is like a pot high and you wont want more than a few drags and you will get the same euphoria when mixed with drinking coffee. After awhile you wont want the cigar and you it will help ween you of the weed. Good luck!

I release myself from the desire to smoke pot.

Dude, stop trying to make it sound narcotic. YOU burnt yourself out. had you used it correctly, this wouldn't have happened. using it when you get off work or before bed is fine.. or when you feel sick.. but not throughout the day, everyday. YOU ruined the experience of it. IT didn't alienate your friends or family... You did. don't use it as an excuse.

It's a psychological addiction

[link to ezinearticles.com]
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28983524

A weak-ass psychological addiction. Anyone who is within the range of a "normal" psych profile should be able to put pot down and walk away without much significant worries at all.

Sex addiction, porn addiction, shopping addiction, food addiction, and gambling are far more serious than marijuana. Perhaps we should start putting porn and shopping addicts in jail, too? Or gamblers. Why, I would lay you dollars to donuts that more harm has come to America because of gambling addictions rather than marijuana "addictions." People who are gambling addicts will steal, deal drugs, get into prostitution for the money to gamble. Women, primarily, will ruin the most important relationships in their lives--with their husbands--because of their shopping addictions. Etc.

Etc.

Etc.

OP, please please please listen to me:

Don't make this such a big deal. Just do it. It is easy. If you feel that marijuana has caused such harm and distress in your life, then DON'T DO IT ANYMORE. Simple as that. I don't advocate that you "just chill out, man, and only smoke once a month." No. Just quit. You are psyching yourself out. You're spending time here garnering attention. Go out and take a run. Just do it.

Get your head together and move on with life. If you can't handle marijuana, it's not for you. Peace, good luck, and Godspeed.
