Sounds to me like those 144,000 are human sacrifices demanded by your loving god. All male, virgins, taken as "first fruits" or the best of the culling sure looks like a selection of human sacrifices. Hey, the Mayan did human sacrifices....too.

I cannot see them as special for starting a new order because they had no nasty women with them.
