Such a proposal would punish those who are not guilty of anything. That's not acceptable. I would suggest treating households with a dangerously mentally ill occupant the same as one with a convicted felon. In that case, yes, the weapons would need to be stored off the premises...at a place of the owner's choosing, not the police. That's not a perfect solution, either, but solves the problem you're trying to fix while minimizing the infringement on everyone else. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1707881 United States 12/17/2012 06:23 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | the solution is concealed carry EVERYWHERE... The last 3 major shootings were: Theater, Mosque, School. What do they have in common? oh yea...ALL GUN FREE ZONES. Gun free zones = deadly zones And NO shills, I'm NOT saying the kids should be packing. But if the principal had kept a gun in her office in a safe or even concealed carry herself or even a teacher, THIS COULD HAVE BEEN GREATLY PREVENTED. |

But even that wont stop the shootings. The asshole shooter in this case used weapons stolen from his mother. Weapons that were undeniably legally purchased, and possessed by her, they even could have been locked up nit when a lunatic family member shoots you in the face with your own weapon its kind of hard to stop the theft. Just saying no matter what they come up with including more stringent laws or confiscation it wont stop anything, in fact crime will go up. But by allowing the open or concealed carry by every ciyizen anytime and any place, would drastically lower these instances from happening or at the very least end them sooner with fewer casualties just from the simple fact that its a lot harder to commiy these heinous attacks when there are several weapons pointed right back at you. People tend to have more respect toward a persom when they are armed...strangest thing |

rf (OP) User ID: 1287633 United States 12/17/2012 07:02 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'm back. Had to sleep. I believe that these mass shootings are a result of brainwashing. I believe the signal is being transmitted over our tv's. That being said, the aurora shooting was supposed to turn the tide of public opinion. It didn't work, so this school shooting was executed. It is working perfectly. in the next few days, some of the most restrictive gun laws will be pushed through congress and the senate. The ar15 and the ak47 will immediately be restricted. There will be no grandfather clauses. You turn them in now or we'll come get them. That will be the ultimatum. This can go 2 ways. The guns are turned in, our...a lot of americans are about to be executed by their government. enough americans are opposed to guns that you won't only be fighting the government, you'll be getting turned in by your neighbor. I am the only guy at my job who shoots for sport and have been ostricized for doing so. Have you ever been called a radical? I have. would a guy who plays basketball on weekends be called a basketball nut? No. But I've been called a gun nut. I've invited co-workers to come shoot with me and they roll their eyes. if the government says "tell us who has guns." these people will turn me in, in a second. When I first saw in the news that a guy killed a bunch of 6 year olds, I just had a sinking feeling that this is the beginning of either civil war 2 or disarmament. |

I do not believe that more than 15% of NRA members will maintain solidarity with their ideals, when they are threatened. I do not think there will be war or revolution. People have become softened by the modern lifestyle. They have become dependent on their comforts. The average citizen will not crawl through the mud spying out groups of well armed oppressive thugs. They will not set up sniper points on roads and intersections either. No point because they will be targeted by aircraft with FLIR. |

Scotland - one school shooting, and all cartridges / clips banned from private ownership. No more school shootings. There's merit in what OP says, particularly for certain types of weapons. I don't agree with the NRA interpretation of the constitution and I think that there's no place for civilian ownership of semi-automatic weapons. Period. Hunting weapons are not designed for mass murder. In my opinion such weapons are not the discussion. it's the automatics or those with large clips. What on earth do you need these for in your homes? For those of you who don't like the idea that "guns kill people" I would suggest that it's exactly the case. Yes, people use the guns to kill people, but if someone has a semi-automatic weapon vs. a single-shot weapon or non-automatic, you tell me how that person is not better able to commit mass crimes. Don't you, in your private gun-clutching hearts believe that someone with an automatic is able to kill more people in less time simply BECAUSE THEY CAN? Don't you also believe that if those weapons were not available, the number of victims would be lower? MUCH lower? It's a complete embarrassment that this country has 100's of millions of guns floating around in the population. It will take years to reverse this, but I completely agree with the OP that at least for some weapons, his suggestion is worth considering. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 30126165 United States 12/17/2012 07:37 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | As a gun owner and shooter and a father of a 6 yr old daughter I was extremely alarmed by the recent school shooting. I enjoy shooting but admittedly, guns make killing easy.. The truth is, that in the hands of a maniac, they make it way to easy. Quoting: RF 1287633 but is giving guns up truly a solution? Is throwing out the Constitution really an option. I would say no. but there is an underlying problem and that is the mental state of the USA. Too many of us are on anti-depressants and psychotropic drugs, making us unstable and unpredictable. in this recent case, the guns were not even the property of the killer. so is there an option, which allows gun owners the right to own and fire a gun, while keeping these same guns away from manic psychos? I believe so. Here is my proposal. what if the local sheriffs department held guns in a locked room for each gun owner? In order to use it, you went and signed it out. You could sign it out for a day or a week or a month. The gun owner paid rent keep the guns locked up. I know that this removes the guns from the home and hence, remove the ability to protect oneself, but most people I know keep their guns in a gun safe, which is inconvenient. this is a sacrifice on the part of gun owners, and it is a sacrifice on behalf of those who say, take away the 2nd amendment. But it would take a pretty ballsy move, to go to the sherriffs office and sign out a gun and then go kill with it.. As a matter of fact, who would go ask a cop for their gun so they could go kill? gun owners: surely this option beats having your guns confiscated forever, right? gun haters: this puts the killing machines in the hands of trained professionals, who can observe the owner and look for signs of anger or anything that alerts them to something unusual about their behavior. again, I own 8 different guns: 2 pistols, 2 semi-auto rifles, 1 shotgun, 1 pistol calibre rifle and 2 short barreled rifles. I shoot weekly. But gun sales have gone through the roof and who is to say that all of these gun owners are all together there. buy a gun, it goes directly to the sheriffs department. Sign it out, go shooting, sign it back in. BTW: when I was I. The army this was very similar to the armory. In order to get my m16 I had to sign it out and return it later that day. No different. Good morning... Moron. 1) Stop infringing the fuck out of "shall not be infringed". 2) The "government" isn't making ANY "sacrifices". Because ANY attempt to take away the 2nd amendment is an unconstitutional and ILLEGAL law, and is PURE treason, punishable by death. 3) Pull your head out of your colon. Makes it a lot easier to see. |

It is not the NRA's interpretation, it is the SCOTUS and many historical interpretive writings. Notice how the anti-gun establishment is using the term, "semi-automatic weapons instead of assault rifles. What the hell is the definition of "hunting weapons" and what do hunting weapons have to do with the Second Amendment? So to you, non Mass murder is somehow more acceptable than "mass murder"? The term is magazine not "clip"! The need is for whatever legal activity I deem necessary. You present a very disturbing idea that it is somehow socially acceptable to shoot five people in 30 seconds with a bolt action "hunting rifle" as opposed to 20 people in 10 seconds with a "semi-automatic weapon" with a 20 or 30 round magazine (not a clip). Of course we all know that anti-gunners such as yourself want to ban and confiscate all weapons. Oh and BTW, it appears at this time that this deranged person used two handguns, not a rifle. But then, gun banners such as yourself were never known to get your facts straight before engaging in a intelligent conversation about firearms and the Second Amendment. PERIOD! |
