saw one of those, or very similar (the threading was a bit longe i believe) bout a year ago over here,
also it was horizontal, not vertical.
But clearly a screw cloud, freaking amazing had to pull over.
if it is plasma discharge it would make sense it is perpendicular to earth surface
the one i saw was probably freak of nature

Was probably a stunt plane with smokers on the wings. There is a stunt pilot near where i live who does all sorts of flips and rolls, if he added smokers to the wings i'm sure that's what would show up.

Dear comrades, as a Russian, living near Moscow I can say that Moscow is a no-fly zone. You can rarely see any planes in it's sky (Not counting in the higher - flying ones and that this piece of contrail might have been blown over the city by atmospheric winds.) But I still see this as a contrail. Probably from a T154 (They have three engines in the back, closely spaced together.)

Probably done by one of those planes that writes messages in the sky.

I've seen similiar trails at an airshow.

I see at least two more contrails here, if Moscow is no fly zone what are the odds?!

I am not sure it's Moscow then. Perhaps a suburb? That seems like a high-flying jet, so it might be flying out of bounds of the Moscow Ringway. Could be so many possibilities.

There are several airports near Moscow. It could be that the cloud was viewed from one of those areas and the viewer simply said Moscow for ease of communication (since few outside of Russia would know where Domodedovo is). The building in the first photo looks like it might be easily identifiable to someone who can read Russian.

That's the fundamental problem with these kinds of sightings:
- amateur observers rarely report the correct or necessary information
- amateur investigators assume everything being reported is 100% accurate


On the other hand, a similar cloud was viewed over Columbus, OH back in January 2012. A meteorologist had observed it and postulated that it could have been a swirling wind from high altitude that made it's way closer to the ground. So, perhaps not airplane generated at all.

The only thing standing there is like "We are opened" Looks like some kind of hotel, or office building to me. Those concrete outcroppings on the living block to the left look kinda nifty, don't they? What is tehir purpose? But I am sure teh photo was taken int eh evening around 16-25th of December, since it looks cold, frosty and clear. I bet you can find where East is now. I am not sure if that would help.
