Quoting: InfiniteTopHat 5*'s and green karma for you OP! Wind is not an option - there is no enough place for this on the Earth. Hydro is not an option - there is no enough water resources, and no real profit - only regulated prices will save your wallet from hyrdo energy. Hyrdo-thermal is not an option either - too few places for this. Solar energy is bullshit - at the current status of technologies - you spend ~ same amount of energy to produce this solar batteries, that they would produce in lifetime. Do you think nuclear would have been viable without trillions in tax-breaks and subsidies paid by the tax-payer..? This is ongoing, as well.. How much is it going to cost to store and regulate nuclear waste for the next thousand years or so..? Hmm..? No need to store. They can be used again already (at least in my country). Well... how about dealing with all of that shit your country dumped into the ocean...? No need to store it... huh..? |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 24957083 United States 12/26/2012 12:43 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Any idea where to put the hundreds of thousands of ton extremely radioactive waste then? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 30881614 This would be the hardest part... Currently there is no method of altering radioactive half-life. This radioactive waste has such a long half-life that there isn't a feasible way for us to dispose of it in our lifetime sans jettisoning it into space. Which is an idea I'm kind of against, we don't know what we may piss off sending that stuff off into space or if it'll catch an orbit somewhere and return to fuck us down the road. If this stuff causes so much trouble and is so hard to get rid of don't you agree it is pretty stupid we continue to extract and use it? Yes there is. There is a fesible safer means of producing nuclear energy that doesn't produce nuclear waste but can actually use NUCLEAR WASTE as a fuel source. There is a working reactor that has been around since the 60's, the only downside is that you can't produce weapons grade material out of it, and thus, why it was never continued by governments around the world. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 27972246 United States 12/26/2012 01:00 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The bans on building new nuclear facilities is the problem, not the solution. We haven't build a new nuclear facility in a long time, but the technology for making new nuclear facilities has improved dramatically. The new designs are cheaper and safer to operate, while generating less waste. They also don't carry the chance of a meltdown like the ones we currently operate. But we are forbidden from building them the new designed ones. The old ones can't be shut down, because they won't be allowed to put up new, safer ones in their place. Quoting: samanthasunflower Can't we all agree that existing nuclear plants be allowed to build a brand new (or several smaller) plants now, so that they can shut down the old plants that they have now when the new ones come on line? |

Hell, Millions are dying annually from Cancer caused by radioactive particulate in our bodies and food and houses and even in our drinking water. The death rate from Cancer per capita has increased ten fold since 1899. It actually did that in less than a century because that ten fold increase was realized in 1990. Everybody that we know has a brother or father or mother or sister who has or will catch cancer. Cancer was only seldom seen in the 1800's. Now it is everywhere. |

Ps- I can't stand whinny enviros but on this they were right Many of our nuclear plants are of the same design as those in Japan and cannot be considered stable. As a transition, more clean coal generated electrical plants with effective coal scrubbers need to be built but Obama says he wants to get rid of all coal operations so "electricity will of necessity skyrocket" in order to FORCE us into nuclear plants or into still-unaffordable solar. Personally I would love to have my whole house solar or geothermal, but the feds cancelled the IRS deduction for alternative energy for individuals. State subsidy only from a select few power companies; most for corporations or local governments. The NRC are highly antagonistic as a watch dog and don't put up with unsafe and sloppy pratices. HA! |
