Many of our nuclear plants are of the same design as those in Japan and cannot be considered stable.

We managed for thousands of years till recently without..I dont see why we cant manage without nuclear electricity again

after Japan..in my opinion..we have no option..the risks I think are just too high

Besides I dont know about your neck of the woods..but here my electricity bills keep getting higher and higher..go figure

We managed because of population. There are BILLIONS of people on the Earth now; you can't sustain them all with wood. Also, where exactly does the "Dump radioactive waste in your back yard" thing come from? We'd have a quicker problem with overpopulation than running out of places to dump it. The earth is a pretty big place, believe it or not.

Leave it where it is and concrete over it like they did with Chernobyl. What do they intend to do with it now anyway?

Sure, where we should be sending it in the first place, outerspace no harm no foul, its all radation anyways.

Coal? Most coal has uranium in it - when burnt the uranium goes up with the smoke and get spread around the world.

Dams kill fish. Salmon are on the way out, why? Because we dammed up their rivers. Several species of salmon are extinct, with more on the endangered list.


And sadly its not just the salmon that are dying, salmon were (past tense) one of the key stones of how the ecology of most of the pacific northwest operated, their swimming up stream brought nutrients which were carried around by bears and deposited all over. The loss of those nutrients lead to devastating changes in ecology which has lead to contemporary tree (forest) die offs due to disease because those trees were no longer getting those nutrients.

Here is the terrible truth, there is no replacement for nuclear power that is less dangerous than nuclear power. Each potential 'alternative' carries with it its own set of risks and devastation to the environment.

Solar power cells - sorry, the materials needed to make cheap solar cells is deadly to the environment, and the by product of manufacturing does more damage per year than all of the nuclear 'accidents' we have seen to date.

Wind - those magnets that make the generation possible are hard to get off and release thorium - oddly enough rare earth metals are often all but saturated with thorium. Thorium is radioactive. Processing of those rare earth metals include chemicals which cause cancer - you are more likely to develop cancer living next to a rare earth magnet factory than you are next to a nuclear power plant.

Anyway you want to slice the 'problem' of power as in replacing was to produce power, you end up hitting deadly consequences.

When you start really looking at these technologies, you discover that the impact of even the primative solid fuel fission reactors poise less risks and dangers than solar cells and wind - which are considered 'green' and 'sustainable'.

The only way to actually do the energy thing and not harm or have a huge risk factor is for everyone to cut back on energy usage.

But we all know that ain't gonna happen.

Hopefully (and if you looked at thorium) we will move toward using thorium reactors in the near future. This suddenly makes the use of wind power less radioactive (as in we are using the waste which is thorium of mining rare earths).

But since its really, really hard to build bombs with thorium reactors, we most likely won't see that for a long time to come.

Does your electricity come from a nuke plant? If so what are you using as an alternative right now? Not later or in the future but right NOW?! How is it your on the internet? And if your on another form of power production how can YOU (judge jury and executioner) decide who lives when your nice and warm and using electricity on unnecessary power usage (the internet)?

It's been between 1 - 15F at night here what do you do to stay warm?

Most of the power that is generated.. no matter how... goes
for industrial use..
If they were forced to use nukes.. small ones, as being introduced in Norway..
that would make the civilian [much, much less] use of power much more attainable by alternate means..

Build industrial/nuclear complexes... segregated from humans.. enclosed and triple redundant..
Make the owners live there..
If you profit from nuclear.. you take the risk..

Leave me and my family out of it.

The Japan nuke disaster could have easily been avoided by spending a 10 million on equipment that would keep the cooling pumps running.

Anyway.

We need nukes, especially now with the war on coal. The peaking plants are going away along with 25% of all coal fired plants. How are going to make up for it?


When we think of green energy we generally think of solar and wind, around here anyway, (PA WV). It's not a real alternative for us.

What we do have are "alternative" coal fired plants. Check out the ARRIPA. They were built to burn waste coal. Coal that cannot be used in traditional style boilers. Whats interesting about these alternative coal fired plants is that they were built recently, late 80's early 90's and they can pretty much burn anything. Tires, trees, nuts, you name it. Somewhat similar to garbage incinerators.

Another type of alternative power that has been around for a long time is the municipal solid waste and muni sludge waste boilers.

Having those alternatives will not make up for the loss of traditional coal fired plants and they will certainly not make up for any nuke plants being closed.

no need to do that, just need to find safer ways to generate power. its stupid to have such a huge risk hanging over our heads
