They know because they have every rivet and sheet of steel accounted for. They can only make X number of firearms over N amount of time. Expansion of manufacturing facilities takes time. Warehouses must be built, machinery ordered and put in place, etc.

I think it will take several months for supply to catch up to demand with the rifles themselves.

One thing you might consider is police auctions. They have auctions from evidence and property to raise money at least around here. can't say I've been to more than a couple and don't know if they sell firearms or not.

The ammo shortage may be a different problem all together. We are competing with the Feds who ordered tons of ammo

double in price. They make more not meeting full demand. They could double to two or three shifts in the factory. Been cutting back for years of recession. Add employees, not a big issue. I would find it difficult to believe they need to build new production they have more than likely been running way under capacity. Probably had warehouses of them, now sold out. Add a shift.

its a gun lobby bail out. I am acquainted with firearms dealers. They love it. Drives up prices, drives up their profits. Everyone in the industry loves it. They don't want firearms banned altogether, but the threat of banning, laws, publicity drives up prices and profits.

A couple of years ago the same was true for ammo. Then the shelfs were full again. The same will happen by summer. In the mean time save your money.

bigger question is why wouldn't he, or anyone in Washington want to. nra is just a small percentage of the funding that hits Washington every year. Don't forget manufacturers. Other thing to consider is besides the unemployment rate and economic issues, we are coming down from a war. Which means we are actually lowering production capacity of ammo and weapons. I wonder if this is also part of the problems. Coming off high production from the wars, combined with the expected military cuts in the fiscal cliff or whatever agreed upon budgets. The problem isn't a lack of capacity but we have TOO MUCH capacity to manufacturer and are lowering production as we come down from high output war manufacturing. Reminds me of when the u.s was trying to find something for weapons manufacturers to do during peacetime so started having them make weather satellites and giving them b.s. projects to keep their revenues up.

if you want to know why there is a shortage, there has been a confidential memo sent to major manufacturers and dealers. Asking for a reduction in inventory until firearm legislation is passed.

The individual companies were warned that if they did not comply they would possibly be harmed financially from the upcoming legislation and possible confiscation of inventory. Everyone is in wait and see mode on how they are going to attack the second amendment.

The manufacturers are caving in before anything is even introduced.

Gun sales have been astronomical for several years. Nobody in the industry is limiting their production. In 2010, AR15s were the cheapest they had been in years, because the panic buying had stopped after the 2008 election, and people were unloading their extras so they could put gas in their cars and food on the table.

not sure if this is true but I find it hard to believe.
a. passing legislation through the house of reps is a non starter.
b. I don't think president Obama has the public support for firearms legislation.
c. The government makes a lot of money in tax revenue on guns and ammo sales.
