My grandfather lost a few gold bars once. NOT as easy to find as you think and we had a very good idea where they were and it still took two weeks to find.

How many alphabet agencies wanted a piece of them?

The majority of the respondents to the thread pretend an elephant is only the part of it they are touching at the moment and not aware that any other parts are connected.
In plain fact not one in a thousand intending to hide their precious will do so off their own property or beyond their vision from their property.
Continue to imagine that there are no available techs that can easily search for metals within 40 feet of the surface, if that makes you feel all better. You can imagine that someone watching from a distance unobserved or walking by freshly disturbed earth wont notice or be curious enough to see what's down there.

At least one, they had our phones taped for years. We even caught the fed IN my grandparents house once. After it went to court we found out they were even taping cousin’s phones on the other side of the country who we had never even heard of.

I was even accused of kidnaping a foreign ambassador’s daughter once “she was my friend and acutely just ran away” but the CIA still came and knocked to question me and they followed me for a week till she reappeared. But they just do things by the book; they don’t dig up your back yard unless they are looking for a body or think you are smuggling something. They aren’t going to even walk through your yard, heck they didn’t even open the barn to see if she was hiding in there!

Going to also tell you as a meteor hunter who was very very good at it. Even with the top of the line equipment it is not easy to find them. We’re talking big pieces of iron. You find a 10 pound iron meteorite and correctly document it; it can be worth more than 5 grand. Everyone would be out doing it if all you needed was equipment.
I'm only human, it's my biggest flaw.

We must all realize a sink a chair and a pillow are all luxuries of home and a soldiers helmet takes the place of all three.

It seems you have never tried to light number 2 fuel oil.
Clever you, noticing that no tank engineer has taken this into consideration, or discovering that there is a magic time and space that allows you to approach a armored vehicle in complete safety. You alone know that tanks never ever are accompanied by ground troops, it makes it more fun and a fairer match by children hoping to safely loft a 3 gallon container of fuel oil onto them.
Maybe you can put your 'precious' on your finger and be invisible to boot
Uh huh, much magical moment thinking abounds in these here parts.

You really dont understand how metal detectors work, do you?
They radiate a signal into the ground that can go many feet down, this induces a signal in the metal mass that is re-radiated and detected by the device. It can tell not only the size but the material it's made of.
They have available large vehicle mounted devices that can cover many hundreds of square feet per minute depending on the terrain.

You really are a prisoner of your own ignorance.
What you dont know can hurt you.

Who would be stupid enough to bury it in an open space for a vehicle to drive over it. Just like you said depending on terrain. Also a small hole with "anything" in it covered with a rock just alittle bigger than the hole hides it. Checked myself with my metal detector and others equipment, NADA my friend NADA. reads like a fence post! The signal goes straight down not laterally. Go away!

Re: BURY YOUR GOLD AND GUNS? Dont bother. They can find them easy
There are a couple of problems with burying, though I agree with the sentiment, I'm not sure it's the way to go.

For one thing, most gun owners are already on a list. Ever fill out a 4473? You're on a list. Ever post "anti-government" or "pro 2nd Amendment" content on conspiracy forums? List. Ever gotten a hunting license? List. You get the idea. Not that government is all-knowing and all-powerful, but they may prove to be more problematic than you think if they set their mind towards confiscation.

Any of us on a list will be treated as threats. Even if we turn in all of our weapons, they will assume we have a hidden cache of them or we know others who do, and we will be dealt with accordingly.

It won't be good old boy cops doing the grabbing most likely - hell, most of them don't want your guns. Or, I should say, they don't want to confiscate your guns. The problem is the new breed of "Brown Shirt" goons that are recruited to do the deed. They'll have the lists.

It could get ugly.

Not arguing, just throwing out food for thought.

Metal detectors are not real useful around underground pipes or places where you would expect to find metal anyhow.

Near to state owned railroad tracks or other permanent infrastructure can be a good location for an emergency stash of coin or paper, like for the "if one gets thrown in jail for a while" scenario.

Just so long as one is sure they are not seen when they bury, and exact directions can be given to other to locate it if one is not able to return to the location.

In your world is the earth like 5 miles around? No tree or canopy cover? You're a fool if you think people don't bury important items that are never found.

Too much land to cover.
 Quoting: Chip

I'm a fool for thinking that the vast majority dont have five miles of property to dig up in secret, or that ground penetrating radar or soil disturbance detection satellites to bedrock dont exist.
I'm a fool for imagining that Uncle doesnt have assets to search in the obvious places.

I'm also a fool to think that I can bring my cache with me on the fema bus.

Thanks for the update
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1310640

If you live in America...there's a forest within 50 miles of you. "Ground penetrating radar" is used quite infrequently for objects the size of a hand gun or rifle. Soil disturbance detection? Really? Haha...I won't even grant that a response. Lastly if you're on a FEMA bus...it's too late...you lose.
 Quoting: Chip

99% of people bury their precious where they can see if it's being disturbed, or where they can count on their friends and family noticing if someones snooping around.
Pretty much nobody buries anything of value where others can stumble across it.
The meteorite men search for metal by pulling their detector array with an ATV, and they find things pretty deep and it's just the two of them.
Most of you already list your friends and family on tattlebook or similar.
How you can tell that nobody was watching while you buriesd your precious is a leap of faith, I can tell if someone moved by boat by using google maps.

I feel bad for people like op. They're already stuck in a self imposed prison of their own apathy. The whole mindset of "there's nothing you could do, you've already lost, just lay down and give up" is a pathetic way to live. You give the government too much credit. Every blip on a medal detector isn't going to be a hidden cache of guns, gold, and ammo. They may be able to look for disturbed earth and even run a medal detector around if they're really suspicious, but there are millions of people and they can't do it to everyone. Aside from that, what's to stop someone from scattering a bunch of bolts around their backyard to throw off the detector, or dig up holes everywhere to keep the real location secret? Where there's a will there's a way.

Don't lay down and die, you've only truly lost when you've given up.

Gun runner Eric Holder is that you so smug getting away with blaming the American population with selling guns to Mexican dug cartels when it was obama and you doing the dirty deed.

It appears that you watch too many television programs thus mixing fact with fiction thus have you noticed the amazing amount of rock formations this world contains. Following your criteria, the gropers from TSA and Homeland Security will be forever digging like a dog that has misplaced it bone stash.

I say cool bens let the government waste their resources upon a task that can only be accomplished in science fiction movies.

Re: BURY YOUR GOLD AND GUNS? Dont bother. They can find them easy
Why bury? I’ve been asked that question countless times over the years and my answer is always the same. Because if done properly, it’s the ultimate security for your valuables; not only is it cheaper than any alternative but nothing else is as secure, period.

Hiding your valuables under your mattress or in your sock drawer does not protect against fires or natural disasters like tornados. Safety deposit boxes can be costly in that they are an ongoing expense. They can only be accessed during the bank’s business hours and depend on functioning electricity. Home safes are expensive; they do not always properly protect your valuables against fires or floods and can be easily defeated by any intruder with the proper cutting tools. By burying your valuables underground, one can guarantee that his or her most precious possessions are forever protected against theft, fire, extreme weather, most natural disasters and even the collapse of the electrical grid.

Prior to around 1998, anyone who buried anything underground was considered paranoid by mainstream society. The Y2K or “Millennium Bug” changed that. This was the belief that on December 31st 1999, all computer systems worldwide would crash. Survivalism or “Prepping” as it is now called, started to become more popular. Tabloids like CNN started to push scary stories about new diseases and imminent natural disasters. Television shows and movies geared around apocalyptic themes grew in popularity and sensationalism with mistaken beliefs about the Mayan New Year would push worldwide survival spending past $500 billion during the 2012 fiscal year.

I originally created this website with the intent of helping everyone in every demographic group secure their most valuable possessions. But I am not naïve, I realize that the majority of my visitors will be survivalists and doomsday preppers. This brings me to another reason for burying your possessions; an apocalypse of some sorts. Collapse of the world’s economy, zombies, post peak oil, Fascist gun confiscations, WMD’s, disease or pandemic, mass starvation and civil war all seem to be included in today’s popular ideation.

Before I ever heard about something called the World Wide Web, I had already been burying stuff for about 15 years and I had never lost anything that I put in the ground. One common myth on the Internet is that it’s illegal to bury, hoard or cache survival gear and valuables. This is a complete falsehood since churches, youth groups and schools do it all the time; only they call their caches “Time Capsules.” In addition, the term “geocaching” is a term that defines what’s described as a popular outdoor activity in which participants play a high-tech game of hide-and-seek.

Since the day I first discovered the Internet, I’ve also seen much chatter about how burying stuff is such a waste of time and about how easily the government can swoop in with it’s superior technology and locate everything in the blink of an eye. But in reality, I can remember several instances during my life where a small plane like a Piper or a Cessna disappeared over the American or Canadian Rockies. Despite massive search and rescue operations, a few of these small aircraft have never been found; and these crash sites were ABOVE ground.

The fantasy is that the government knows all and sees all. Using the population of the United States as an example, no government has the ability to constantly monitor 320 million people all at once, (although it certainly does try) nor does it have the resources to scan every inch of U.S. soil. And if no government is capable of finding a buried stash, then neither are thieves, hackers, delinquents, drug addicts or looters. Even the most massive illegal drug farms are either discovered by human intelligence or accidentally stumbled upon by local law enforcement officers investigating an unrelated crime; not located by superior government technology as many would believe.

To this day, there are many “treasures” (safes and even entire bank vaults are still missing from heists; millions of dollars in cash and gold bullion from stagecoach robberies, etc) lost in the old American West that have been buried for more than 100 years and have yet to be discovered.

Simply put; Burying is the ultimate security. Period.

Re: BURY YOUR GOLD AND GUNS? Dont bother. They can find them easy
The 'bury your stash' fantasy is just that, a fantasy.
The metal detection technology is so good, and Uncle can afford the best toys and people to search for your precious and other metal treasure.
You may be unaware that they can with the right tools detect anything you bury that's metal and can selectively search and detect precious metal concentrations to depths deeper than you can dig.

The 'bury now, come back later' fantasy wont work, they can scan your land in minutes for distrubed soil, and even survey your property from space. If they think you have something, they have the time, people and money to search every square inch for metals and voids in the ground to depths of dozens of feet

Sorry to have to tell you this, but burying your stuff simply means youre wasting your time and wasting opportunities.

I dont have any answers, and am unaware of any way of shielding metals and voids in the earth or water from detectors. Just so you dont get your hopes up about prevailing by passive resistance.

Even if they dont know where to look, they know if they put you somewhere and control your movements by some means, whatever is cached will stay cached until found by someone else by accident.
 Quoting: Barry Cash 1310640

Total Bullsh#t. They are not going to scan 10 million square kilometers of plowed farm land, river beds, and road accesses.

There are lots of places to store weapons where their metal detectors will not find them.

Besides a compound bow is lethal to a 100 yards, completely silent, made of non-metallic composites and not requiring legislation whatsoever.

To simply mix some gasoline with vasoline load into a super-soaker with an igniter makes a portable flame thrower that will roast alive any property intruders. It just goes on from there how people want to get creative to defend their property.

Re: BURY YOUR GOLD AND GUNS? Dont bother. They can find them easy
I think this illustrates a good point -

1. First they take away the peoples guns (or they try to)
2. Next crime is allowed to come in and will come in because the people are defenseless. How long this period lasts I do not know.

3. That is when the people will need their weapons back the most.

4. It's simply a matter of picking a remote location to go back to get them. In a river valley. Along a road medium on some country road.

And seriously? It takes a good three four hours just to metal detect a single yard.

Besides you wanted to completely foil their attempts at hiding weapons on your property it would be very easy. Go rent a rota-tiller and rota-till the ground down while you do it sprinkle rust dust in with the rota-tiller. Now their metal detectors are useless, happy digging!

All police states collapse under their own weight of enforcement eventually, there has never been an exception.

I have metal detected for years and can tell you for a fact that all land has so much metal trash in it that if you are not willing to spend months there then you will never find a whole lot. Sure these new detectors have fairly good filters in them that will filter out some of the trash metal but there is even lots of trash made out of good metals.

Did you know it is against the law to metal detect on a Federal civil war site? People used to sneak in at night to some federal parks but then they started seeding the ground with BBs, pellets and all sorts of crap. Impossible to find much in those parks with limited time.
