X= 9/1

Fraction times a whole number WTF!!!!!!

I got it right

IT's 9/1

GLP is full of retards.

A couple posts up and you can see the equation and how it's solved.

Just buy a latest model of a scientific calculator and you'll see that its 1. You know canadian boy, Its not too difficult to do it.

Ah I get it now, there are two ways to see it and it is very easy to confuse them together.

3/(1*(1+2))=x
x is 1

or

(3/1)*(1+2)=x
x is 9

According to BEDMAS rules the answer is 9.

Done in this order:
Brackets
Exponents
Division
Addition
Subtraction

Why is this so hard for you all to get? It's basic math!

3/1 TIMES (1+2)
3/1 TIMES 3

9

Re: How To Solve This Equation? 3/1(1+2) = x
How are Fractions and Division Related?

Okay, here’s where things get interesting. Have you ever noticed that the way we write fractions is the same as the way we usually write division problems? In other words: two numbers separated by a horizontal or slashed line? Well, this notational similarity isn’t an accident. Let’s go back to our example fraction 22/7, and think about it in terms of a division problem instead: 22 divided by 7. How can we interpret this problem? Well, imagine you have a single 22 meter long stick that you need to divide into 7 equally sized pieces. How long will each of those pieces be? That question is exactly what the division problem is asking too. So, imagine you go about making marks on your big 22 meter stick and successfully divide it up into 7 pieces. And then imagine using your meter sticks and your 1/7 meter sticks from before to figure out how long one of these divided pieces is. The answer will be 22/7 or 3 1/7—the exact same as before.

Re: How To Solve This Equation? 3/1(1+2) = x
:| wtf is wrong with you people?

x = 9... simple as that.

Let me break this down into baby steps for you because I have to apparently hold your hand. Anyone that wants to reference this reply, go ahead. Remember PEDMAS as the order of operations. What that means is what we need to work out first...

1. Parentheses (what is inside them)
2. Exponents
3. Division OR Multiplication (which ever comes first left to right)
4. Addition OR Subtraction (Which ever comes first left to right)

Our problem is: 3/1(1+2) = x

Step 1. First we need to work out the problem in parenthesis. we keep the parentheses around 3 to represent the multiplicative relationship between 3 and 1.

3/1(1+2) = x --> 3/1(3) = x (or it could have been 3/1 x 3 = X)

Step 2. Move onto #2 in the order of operations.

3/1(3) = x --> 3(3) = x

Step 3. Now all we have left is a simple multiplication between the two 3's. This could have read as 3 x 3 = X.

3(3) = x --> 9 = X OR X = 9

The answer is 9.

Even this calculator here, a scientific calculator, states that is the correct answer:

[link to web2.0calc.com] and put in 3/1(1+2) = x.

Anyone else who refutes this has some education to catch up on.

Where do I think the problem lies in peoples responses?

It lies in the fact that people are mixing up Parenthetic importance around the three with a multiplicative relationship between the 3 and the 1. The parentheses only stay because they provide that multiplicative relationship. We could have also written it as 3/1 x 3 = X where the little x is the symbol for multiplication. We don't need to have that extra sign though when we have an existing parentheses around the 3 as it doubles as a multiplicative relationship for the 1.

The answer is that its a poorly written equation and the answer depends upon your interpretation.

I would say the answer is 1, because I see the equation as

3
-----
1(1+2)

Those who say the answer is 9 are interpreting it as:

3
--(1+2)
1

Re: How To Solve This Equation? 3/1(1+2) = x
what sign does the equation use for 'divide'?
3 over 1 times (1+2)
3 over (1 times 3)
3 over 3 equals 1

3 divided by 1 times (1+2)
3 divided by (1 times 3)
3 divided by 3 equals 1

btw whole numbers are not expressed as 3 over 1, they are put as 3, a (fraction) is 1/3 or 1 divided by 3.

Your question could have been.

3/1((1(1+2)))

Yes if the OP knew how to right an equation on a keyboard.

3/1 is a fraction not a divide so he messed up big time.

3/1(1+2) in this form is a fraction times a whole number.

This what the equation should look like OP
3÷1(1+2)= X

you are wrong there... brackets can be interpreted differently... if you compare calculators, you will see, every calculator has a manual, where is written, how ths specific calculator handles brackets...
you are also wrong, if you think, every equation has only one correct result...
it depends on how exact the equation is defined, this one leves space for interpretation, so allowing 1and 9 as correct answers...
