Back when we lived in the USA, we found an injured bird that could not fly anymore. I'm a sucker for animals, so I called the vet to see if there was anything that could be done to help it.

The vet told me, Do not touch that bird under any circumstances."

She said that she could not legally treat a wild animal, and that I could not legally do so either.

According to her, a federal agency needed to do it, because wild animals could be dangerous, unpredictable, and carriers of disease, therefore needing vets with specialized training to treat them. She said wild animals also needed to be cared for in a way that would not ruin their chances of survival or make them dangerous to humans upon being released into the wild again after they'd recuperated.

She called the wildlife agency, and they came out and picked up the bird. I asked the agent what would become of the bird. He told me a wildlife vet would do what he could to heal the bird's wing. If the bird could not be healed, it would be put down. If the bird recovered well, then it would be brought back to the place where it was found and released.

Eventually, they did come back and release the healed bird. I was happy to see that the little fella made it.

I feel very sorry for these people who are in trouble for helping the deer, and I think the state is being overly harsh, though I learned upon finding that bird why they don't want folks tending to wild critters.

Prior to my lesson with the bird, I could see something like this happening to me. The reason I called the vet was because the bird needed care beyond anything I was able to give. Otherwise, who knows what I might have done.

I was wondering this too. I've never heard of a such thing as "squirrel season".
