How can we build a computer that simulates the brain when we don't fully understand how the brain works?

For the most part we do understand how a brain works.

Once the simulation starts thinking for itself it will tell us the rest... chuckle

Even though we still have NO idea how/where memories are stored.

Scientists always think they just about (99%) understand things, when this is rarely the case.

Memories reside in specific brain cells.

The simulation is as good as its code so all of this has to be factored in.

...Seems legit.
"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it. Fifteen hundred years ago everybody knew the Earth was the center of the universe. Five hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat, and fifteen minutes ago, you knew that humans were alone on this planet. Imagine what you'll know tomorrow."

Since every communication by every person on the internet is recorded, I wonder what would happen if all this information were put into this brain simulation?

That's a very intriguing thought.

Since people get along so well on the internet they should definitely try that... charlie

I think that a simulation like this, once perfected, could "learn" to speak like anyone on the internet. If they plugged this thing into your best friend's facebook or twitter, you'd never know it wasn't your friend.

The controller of the simulation could have your apparent friend favor certain viewpoints and try to influence you. Or could be used as a spy against you. Who knows what deviltry they'll come up with.

Re: Billion Euro supercomputer to 'simulate entire human brain'
I don't think this is going to be a self-aware thing.

More likely it will simulate how the brain works in order to understand disease and functioning, but it can't actually function like a human brain.

Think of it like those real doll sex dolls - they may "simulate" real women, but they don't function or have the capabilities of real women.

Chip-based artificial intelligence will have to work very differently from the human brain because the hardware they use is so fundamentally different.

Interesting indeed. I would venture this idea further and suggest this has already been done and we are merely experiencing perceived consciousness, living within a simulation of every communication and thought run by a super computer, which in itself is a super computer just existing within a simulation of the brain run by a super computer...

Science knows so little about the nature of the universe it's amazing we as a species has survived this long - stumbling along in the dark. Computers run on code, computers can take action using algorithms and programed choices - they can't nor won't 'think' for themselves. If computers ever destroy mankind, it will be because the programmers included those options.
