Sorry, it was "Sir Francis Dashwood" (not Charles Dashwood, my misremembering): [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)] The first Hellfire Club was founded in London in 1719, by Philip, Duke of Wharton and a handful of other high society friends.[5] The most notorious club associated with the name was established in England by Sir Francis Dashwood,[6] and met irregularly from around 1749 to around 1760, and possibly up until 1766.[7] In its later years, the Hellfire was closely associated with Brooks's, established in 1764. Other clubs using the name "Hellfire Club" were set up throughout the 18th century. Most of these clubs were set up in Ireland after Wharton's were dispelled.[8] The club motto was Fais ce que tu voudras (Do what thou wilt), a philosophy of life associated with François Rabelais' fictional abbey at Thélème[7][9] and later used by Aleister Crowley. [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)] The Lunar Society of Birmingham was a dinner club and informal learned society of prominent figures in the Midlands Enlightenment, including industrialists, natural philosophers and intellectuals, who met regularly between 1765 and 1813 in Birmingham, England. At first called the Lunar Circle, "Lunar Society" became the formal name by 1775. The name arose because the society would meet during the full moon, as the extra light made the journey home easier and safer in the absence of street lighting. The members cheerfully referred to themselves as "lunarticks", a pun on lunatics. Venues included Erasmus Darwin's home in Lichfield, Matthew Boulton's home, Soho House, and Great Barr Hall. They would meet for dinner and argue on into the night before climbing on their horses to ride home. And because they wanted to be able to see their way, they chose to meet each month on the Sunday nearest to the full moon—which was why they called themselves the Lunar Society of Birmingham, or the Lunaticks. The meetings were started by Erasmus Darwin, Matthew Boulton, and William Small. Erasmus was an enormously fat, popular, and successful doctor, a prolific inventor, father of 12 children by his two wives and two more by a governess, and grandfather of the famous Charles Darwin. Boulton was a manufacturer of buckles and a bold entrepreneur. Small was Boulton's doctor and had been teacher and mentor of the great American politician Thomas Jefferson. They were later joined by Charles Darwin's other grandfather, the potter Josiah Wedgwood, chemist James Keir, steam-engine builder James Watt, chemist Joseph Priestley, and several others. In all, there were some 14 members, though not all at the same time. The meetings were held almost every month for more than 30 years. Arguably, there has never before or since been such a regular concentration of scientific intellect meeting under one roof. Priestly was another Lunatic and Satanist. |

If the Origin of Species had been written by Adolf Hitler it would still have been the exact same book. Making the same points, supported by the same EVIDENCE. You would still be required to contest this evidence with MORE and BETTER evidence. Science respects no authorities. Be ye pope, emperor, or king, only the evidence matters. That's what makes it so subversive... Never mind that a century and half has passed and the evidence has only gotten stronger and the theory more sophisticated. Reaching for the sky makes you taller.
