I could google but where's the fun in that? The rain is really coming down. Quoting: it's difficult 10163663 torrential rain does not last long. put on your rain poncho and hunker down until it quits. then reach into your BOB and pull out the cotton balls that you treated with Vaseline. spread one out by breaking it apart in thin layers. dig into the pine needles and find the driest ones you can...or better, look and find some twigs/leaves that didn't get wet which are hidden under overhangs of rock, etc. build a teepee of th driest stuff you can find and ignite the cotton ball with your handy flint sparker which you carried...or a lighter. hopefully the teepee will be dry enuf to ignite if not, pull out the 250,000btu weed burner in your pack and hook it up to the lp propane tank you carry along... ignite it and instantly dry all the material you like... then build a nice fire and torch it up |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2530461 Shave small pieces of a branch and put the on a shredded piece of birch bark. The bark light pretty easily even when wet. and one more excellent tip like above. the roots/base of a ponderosa pine is so filled with pitch that it burns like kerosene when lit. strips of this material can be dried with a dry cloth and then ignited easily. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 43003300 Canada 07/08/2013 11:41 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Try to find dead wood still attached to a tree. Branches and that sort of thing. It will only be wet an inch or two deep and probably still dry in the middle. Split it and use shavings from the center of the branch to get it going and keep it going. Find a way to keep that stuff dry while you're preparing it. Put up a tarp overhead and work under it, or do it in the tent. Keep splitting the dead branches and throw them on as the fire gets going. The dry wood in the middle will burn readily and dry the outside as the fire burns and eventually burn that too. Good luck. |

When carbide crystals get wet they release a flammable gas (this is what used to be in a miner's lamp). All you have to do is make a spark and you have fire. The more rain, the more gas is released. When I was a kid we would carry it camping/hiking in a 35mm film can. For fun we would lay some in the snow, then hit it with a spark. Instant burning snow!! |

the_truth_seeker User ID: 24976910 Canada 07/09/2013 12:47 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I practice solo survivals often and my trick to success in very wet conditions is lots of Birch bark. I scrape dry Birch bark from the inner layer then start it with my fire striker. Birch bark is pretty much like gas paper. Use lots of it to start the fire and make sure you start by burning many small twigs only. Wait until you have enough cols accumulated before putting bigger wet branches. Then around the fire start pilling your wood to dry it. Good luck. If you want the truth... You have to seek the truth! |
