Quoting: Anonymous Coward 44417887 Is it mandatory? That was sort of my next question why would someone who doesn't care about the Bible swear on one? it makes about as much sense as swearing on a copy of Moby Dick “If we are peaceful, if we are happy, we can smile and blossom like a flower, and everyone in our family, our entire society, will benefit from our peace.” Thich Nhat Hanh, Being Peace "But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you." - Job 12:7,8 "When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro." - Hunter S. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 44417887 Is it mandatory? Last time I went to court I told the judge I wouldn't be swearing to any invisible beings. The judge was like wtf? I was like I don't believe in invisible things and won't be swearing to any. He changed it to do you promise to tell the whole truth and just dropped the God nonsense. |

Someone may be asked to swear on the bible but in fact be proven to have lied but then be let off that lie as they do not believe in the bible. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 41239039 United States 08/02/2013 05:27 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | When the Bible itself says NOT to Quoting: Rev StarGazer Matthew 5 34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: 35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. 36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. 37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. Unsurprisingly, you are not the first person to raise such a question. See here: 'Affirmation in law' In law, an affirmation is a solemn declaration allowed to those who conscientiously object to taking an oath. An affirmation has exactly the same legal effect as an oath, but is usually taken to avoid the religious implications of an oath; it is thus legally binding but not considered a religious oath. Some religious minorities hold beliefs that allow them to make legally binding promises, but forbid them to swear an oath before God. Additionally, many decline to make a religious oath because they feel that to do so would be valueless or even inappropriate, especially in secular courts. In some jurisdictions, an affirmation may only be given if such a reason is provided. [link to en.wikipedia.org] |
