Comet Lovejoy (C/2013 R1) ::: closest earth pass 19 Nov
Comet Lovejoy was discovered only recently, this past September 2013, and it is currently outshining Comet ISON, previously touted as the 'Comet of the Century.' With the assistance of ordinary binoculars or a small telescope, astronomy aficionados can see Comet Lovejoy near the Beehive star cluster found in the constellation of Cancer the Crab.

... The comet is expected to be at its brightest on November 19th as it passes at its closest point to Earth, at 38.1 million miles away. Afterwards, Comet Lovejoy will near the Sun around Christmas Day with its closest pass to the Sun, called perihelion, at 81.6 million miles, or 0.877 astronomical units (AUs).

err, discovered only two months ago?
Perihelion's on Christmas day?

Forgive me for thinking religiously but shouldn't this comet deserve a little more scrutiny?

Isn't that also the day ISON passes closest to Mercury?

yes it would be pretty close to that time, with comet Encke
positioned right between Mercury and ISON in an overhead view.
I find it disturbing that this comet Lovejoy perihelions on Christmas day yet very little threads exist on it. Bizarre.

This is a new comet discovered only two months ago in Sept 2013 which is also named Lovejoy due to it's discoverer.

If the name sounds familiar, that’s because the comet was discovered by Australian observer Terry Lovejoy, the prolific discoverer of four comets, including the brilliant sungrazing Comet C/2011 W3 Lovejoy that survived its 140,000 kilometre perihelion passage above the surface of the Sun on December 16th and went on to dazzle southern hemisphere observers in late 2011 and early 2012.

It would be ironic if the name of the comet to bring doom was "Lovejoy".

I agree, particularly as it's brighter than ISON as this time according to the links. I find it unbelieveable to say the least.

So which comet am I seeing in the morning just to the left of the sun just after sunrise? I've seen it for the last 3 days. Someone told me that it was Lovejoy, but now I'm not so sure

It's clear as crystal, naked eye.

If that pic is in the morning, then I'd say Enke or Linear.

Comet Lovejoy (C/2013 R1) is a real humdinger — almost as bright now as Comet ISON was forecast to be -- which is to say, about 10 times brighter than ISON actually is.

So let me get this straight. Comet Lovejoy R1 is currently 10x brighter than ISON and it was just discovered a month ago? Guess people aren't really looking for comets much are they?

Will Lovejoy R1 pass as close to us as ISON is predicted to?

according to wikipedia ISON will pass about 39.9 miles from Earth on 26 December 2013.

[link to en.wikipedia.org]

Lovejoy will be 38.1 million miles away Nov 19, so yes Lovejoy will make a closer pass to Earth than ISON will.

The Second Sun will come from the direction of Cancer. Note this down and forget/not fall for all the disinformation and disinformation coming in the form of lovejoy, encke, Ison, etc. Those " comets " are the early scout teams of the entourage of the Second Sun.yodayodayoda

roundup:

Comet Lovejoy (C/2013 R1) discovered 7/8 Sept 2013.

Perihelions on Christmas Day.

Brighter than ISON.

Will pass Earth closer than ISON.

I've done a quick search for Comets that have perihelioned
on Christmas day and came up with zip. To me, not being a
religious type it's another day. To religious folks.. one
can only wonder.

BTw, I thought I read Lovejoy was discovered 12-11 by an Australian astronomer.

I'll see if i can find that reference.
Yah here:
November 27, 20ll Lovejoy discovered.
