I know that I did grow from all my years in school, and develop certain intellectual skills, but I don't think the benefits have outweighed the costs in general. My credit is ruined from having student loans and not being able to pay for them the first few years out of school. Now that I make "good" (decent, really, for the cost of living) money, I am going to spend the next decade catching up, fixing my credit - and will probably spend the next 20 years paying them off. The career I have isn't that fulfilling and doesn't pay that much compared to the time and cost of my schooling. I suppose I "help" people, but because of the bureaucracy involved I really don't do as much as I thought I would. In all reality, I could have had a job in a different field, worked my way up to making as much as I do now, and not have these loans. I would have been able to spend the 8+ years I went to college making money, which would have also off-set making a small amount less then I do now if I had not gone to school. College is a scam. When I was going for my undergrad, the school I went to tuition was $4800/semester my freshman year in 1998 and by the time I graduated, in my last year is was $10k/semester. In just 4 years it doubled. Now that same school is $35k / year. Part of the reason is because the schools base their tuition off of how much the banks will give students in loans. Yep, not how much it actually costs to run the school - like a normal business model. But based on what the government will give in grants and what the banks will give in loans. School was difficult, especially my post-graduate degrees, and I would work part-time while going to school full-time just to make enough money to eat and have a shitty car to get to school and work. There would be days where I wouldn't sleep because I would work, do homework/study, go to class, then go back to work. All those years of struggling and being miserable - for what??????? For a career that is difficult to find a job in, for a job that doesn't pay that well where I live alone in a crappy apartment, drive a car with 200k miles on it, barely make enough for rent, bills, and my student loans. I know people who didn't go to school, who don't have these loans, and live a better life than I do. I even know people living off unemployment or especially welfare who have better health insurance (ironically) and end up the same as I do at the end of the month -- just barely getting by. Except they aren't or are hardly working. I put my school and career before a relationship -- because that's what I was brainwashed to do. I am not playing the victim, I blame no one but MYSELF. I decided to go to college, I decided to go to grad school, I decided to go to med school. It was my choice to put that first, but the reality was I had no choice - it is very hard to balance school, a job, etc with a relationship. So now I'm 34 and alone, no kids, every day going to work, coming home, going to work, never getting ahead. I'm not saying someone should put a relationship before other things in their life, it's just that the COST - both personal and financial - has not AT ALL been worth it. It is a scam. We are brainwashed since childhood to think that we are "supposed" to go to college - that the only way to "make it" and get ahead is by doing so. And all it is is a way for banks to make more money and put you into servitude to the system for the rest of your life...  Thread: Going To College: Biggest Mistake of My Life |
