I saw the pin icon at top right and clicked it. Hopefully I did it right.

I am a little ways from Oroville (back roads) and I really appreciate this thread and its updates.

Thank you sweethearts. I am at elevation over 900 feet and we have a bonus large hill that is approximately 400 feet higher.

I am very concerned for the folks down in Loma Rica, Marysville, etc. I tried telling alot of my friends they should get ready to take off if they need to, and they just say, "Aw, we'll be okay, the storm is gonna be done soon." I gave them their chances on where they can come to to remain safe. I don't offer twice.

Another poster in this thread said it would take about 8 hours for the wave to get to Sacramento. Is that true on how fast water can move and spread out? I thought it would be sooner than 8 hours.

Folks...One thing to keep your eyes open for, is if you see the sky almost go black wiht millions of birds flying, you better pack up quick and get to high ground.
 Quoting: TripleReiki

Time to head for the Sutter Buttes. Indians did so to get up over the floods. There's but a few ranches that encircle those hills, but for the most part are empty. Could hold a lot of people for a short time before things would get real hinky...

If you're in the area and caught with your pants down to the big flood...head for the Buttes.

That's an old pic. The spillway is now completely breached on BOTH sides

I.e. It is no longer the spillway..the earthen damn wall is...

Forecasting a huge problem is the action of water as it flows.

It will dig back into the dam wall. No one will be able to see it.

Stay safe anyone downstream.
 Quoting: Baldrick

Remember when you were a kid playing in the sand by the beach/
We used to make a dam and then fill the dam with water, then we would dig a little hole in the side of the dam with our finger.... then the water would burst thru and the entire dam would collapse.
The spillway hole is getting deeper folks. It's digging a hole in the dam and the close it gets to the other side the pressure will break thru and water will come shooting out of that hole like a fire hose. Then the dam will collapse a few hours after that.

Folks who are higher up and normally travel to Marysville/Yuba City for shopping, you may want to do it now, as if that dam breaks and floods those areas, you won't be able to get supplies for awhile.

Yep. It'll dig in at the hole. Get deep and then the spillway concrete above will collapse. Repeat until it digs back the upper spillway then fail.

Hope it holds.

To our dam math wizard,

How fast would the water travel?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73942167

I don't think there's a risk of dam failure. It would require a massive deep-seated landslide in the ridge that the spillway and emergency spillway occupy. Of course they have a long melt season ahead of trying to manage the water level through the compromised spillway, so my opinion on this could change as we see how serious the erosion to the spillway is and if they have to use the emergency spillway.

Also I have no knowledge of flood water propagation speed :)

This is where the emergency spillway is. If it reaches and starts heading over the other side... I cant see how some serious erosion wont happen.

You can see it in the 1st image at the link. They got inspectors in the hole, look at the erosion under the concrete.

Great, thanks.

Our schools in the Palermo district will be closed tomorrow, too.

I live south of Oroville, near the Yuba County line. I just got home from work, and the roads down here are going under water quickly. This is typical this time of year, but it means that soon we will be flooded in and unable to go anywhere if the need should arise.
I've been married so long, I don't even look both ways when I cross the street.

With Folsom dam dumping and the American river rising, and more rain coming, the Sierra snow pack highest it's been in years, frankly I'd get out of Sacramento too. It looks like a "perfect storm" incident.
 Quoting: the redeemable furry pete

I believe this is a 150 year storm. The Atmospheric rivers are very similar to the 1862 California flood. Sacramento was under water for over a month. The Natives tell of an inland sea from the Sierras to the coastal mtns. that would form from time to time.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 70742102

The big dams were built in part to stop the flooding from the snowmelt into the valley.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73359127

Flooding has always been an unfortunate fact of life in California. The Central Valley, for example, used to become a vast inland sea each spring as snowmelt cascaded out of the Sierra into the Sacramento and San Joaquin River systems.

Message from the Butte County Office of Education, Thursday 2/9 1:31 PM;

Districts and Staff:

Safety of our students, staff and community is the number one concern for Butte County Office of Education. Due to the current and forecasted weather conditions, coupled with the uncertainty of the spillway structure and release of more water from Lake Oroville, as Superintendent of Schools, I am calling an emergency situation and advising closure of public schools on Friday, February 10, 2017 in the Oroville Union High School District which includes Bangor Union Elementary School District, Feather Falls Union Elementary School District, Golden Feather Union Elementary School District, Oroville Elementary School District, Palermo Union Elementary School District, Pioneer Union Elementary School District and Thermalito Union Elementary School District in Butte County. All of Butte County Office of Education offices and schools in Oroville will also be closed.

With advice from the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Torlakson, we will be filing a waiver for reimbursement of student attendance due to extreme weather conditions for the schools calling for closure during this emergency in Butte County.

This announcement is being made and this action is being taken in an effort to provide security in knowing steps are being taken to keep our students, staff and community out of harm’s way.

As recommended by all public safety agencies, try to keep travel to a minimum and use extreme caution when navigating transportation routes. With this emergency comes some notoriety and visitors who may not be familiar with unsafe road conditions.

Superintendent Taylor has been in contact with Sheriff Honea, and at this point an evacuation is not mandatory, however, the Sheriff’s Office is monitoring that possibility closely and our office will notify you with any changes.
You can follow the Sheriff’s communications on his twitter at: @ButteSheriff.
Thanking everyone in advance for their continued support to protect the safety of Butte County.

That's many hours old video with one of the spillway walls still intact...they must have stopped the flow because there are images on facebook showing both of the spillway walls blown out and MASSIVE deep erosion both sides of spillway...not sure why these updated images are not being distributed.
