Anonymous Coward User ID: 74708867 United States 04/21/2017 10:46 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Adults are just virtue signaling when they say they respect teachers. Quoting: jpop They do NOT respect teachers at all, but they know they should. They think that their qualified to tell us how to do our "easy" jobs. I had a parent teach one subject out of 7, one day. So basically he did 1/28th of the classes I had per week. This did not include grading, conferences, planning/scheduling, meetings, studying the yearly reinvention of education because gov't is involved and have to have a reason for existence. He paid the kids with candy and turned to me and said, "That's how it's done." What a pompous prick, but I got the message. No, the public doesn't respect teachers, nor do they respect our training and degrees. In fact, they think they could do a better job. How about teaching more useful life skills to our kids like how to plumb a faucet in or change oil in your car instead of a month of what years Ponce de leon and Vasco de Gamez sailed the sea? |

I'm married to a teacher and I can tell you that she works long hours... very long... Not from June through September. Another idiot that knows all about something they've never done. I work 11.5 months. I do not have a summer break because I have to go to classes and work in a classroom all summer. You are living in the 70's if you think we get all summer off. Done explaining. This post proves that you don't respect teachers. All I have to ask is why do you trust someone you treat like shit to do a good job teaching your children? Cause we're so nice? Don't count on it. Not after you've decided that minimum wage is adequate for a masters level education, and constantly criticize the job we're doing. You get what you pay for. You pay a little over minimum wage, and we'll give you a little over minimum wage education. I don't care about you and yours anymore than you care about me and mine. Why do you think we're going to respect you more than you respect us. Ain't happening. Live with it, you started it, continued with your daily uneducated negative opinion, and we will finish it because the people you're disrespecting are teaching YOUR children for minimum wage. Love you too and in the same way. Wow. Way to put the children before the money. You should email this little rant of yours to the parents of all your students. Your ass should be canned. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 63542614 Canada 04/21/2017 11:01 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I will admit, working 190 days, which is 6 months, and receiving 6 PAID months off sounds fantastic. 7:45am to 3:00pm with a couple of papers to grade, weekends off, paid holidays, hour break for lunch, pensions and retirement benefits....teachers have it pretty good Quoting: Anonymous Coward 70938620 So many people think they know what teachers do and yet they never lived in their shoes. Here's the reality. Recent stats show that 50% of teachers quit in the first 5 years of teach citing stress and a lack of life outside of work. 1. Class sizes in many high schools are now sitting at 40-45 students and 10 to 15 years ago class sizes were about 20-25 students. 2. English language learners represent a minimum of 30% of the students in the classes and a teacher had to accommodate for each kid. Some of these students operated at a grade 0 to grade 5 level of English, but are dumped into regular high school classes and we are told to accommodate for there level. 3. Emotional and behavioural issues: We are at epidemic rates of kids being on antidepressants, suffering from anxiety, social phobias, and addictions to things like cell phones. It is an endless battle dealing with all of these issues. 4. Extracurricular expectations: These are not paid positions and are called forced volunteerism. Year book, debate clubs, competitions, coaching etc. 5. Taking work home: average teacher is teaching between 120 to 160 students per semester and must mark every assignment. If you teach math and assign 30 questions you then have to mark between 3600 to 4800 questions. If one assignment is given per day then you are spending your night and weekend grading papers. Point is that people have no idea how much work that teachers put into their jobs. Many including myself, work from 7:30 to 9 or 10pm at nights and a good 6 hours on the weekend. I am not complaining about my job as I love teaching and my students, but I am sick of hearing how overpaid teachers are and how little work they do. |

What a self-righteous prig you are. Yeah keep believing that teachers don't work for money. Keep pretending that you pay them a lot for the education you expect them to have. Don't worry about a thing. No teacher will ever resent the hell out of your ignorant ass. They will be super-human for minimum wage and never ever act toward your children the way you act towards a highly educated professional. Keep acting like I'm the only teacher who thinks this way. I don't care really. It just proves the point that I don't owe you and yours anymore than you owe me and mine. Tough shit, that's life no matter what fairytale you fool yourself with. Why should I out myself? To satisfy you? I don't give a shit about you, just like you don't give a shit about me. Let this be a warning. We ALL feel this way except for the newbies. It takes about 2-3 years of the constant disrespectful abuse from society and people like you. We don't pay you enough, but if you were a good little teacher you wouldn't care. Blow it out your ass, we're real people. You don't face work like that you self-entitled hoity-toit. They didn't can my ass because I won a national and a state award. it made their school look good. Their salaries are paid for with tax dollars. No one wants their taxes to go up. Many of you have already pointed out some of the benefits. They are off every weekend. They are off 2 months during the summer. They have most holidays off. Lots of time off during Christmas. They get a nice spring break. Best of all is the pension! If they live long enough they can collect their pension for as many years as they worked. All they have to do is put up with someone else's bratty kids day in and day out for 30 years! |
