Why are Teachers paid so poorly?

No one is ever paid enough? Have you ever met an employee anywhere that say they get to much pay?

Proof? I was in those classes with those kid's.

Move to Long Island NY, specifically Suffolk county where teachers make $150k+ per year, can't be fired (tenure) and have zero accountability. Of course there are 500-1000 applicants every time a job opens but hey you never know.

So many people think they know what teachers do and yet they never lived in their shoes. Here's the reality. Recent stats show that 50% of teachers quit in the first 5 years of teach citing stress and a lack of life outside of work.

1. Class sizes in many high schools are now sitting at 40-45 students and 10 to 15 years ago class sizes were about 20-25 students.

2. English language learners represent a minimum of 30% of the students in the classes and a teacher had to accommodate for each kid. Some of these students operated at a grade 0 to grade 5 level of English, but are dumped into regular high school classes and we are told to accommodate for there level.

3. Emotional and behavioural issues: We are at epidemic rates of kids being on antidepressants, suffering from anxiety, social phobias, and addictions to things like cell phones. It is an endless battle dealing with all of these issues.

4. Extracurricular expectations: These are not paid positions and are called forced volunteerism. Year book, debate clubs, competitions, coaching etc.

5. Taking work home: average teacher is teaching between 120 to 160 students per semester and must mark every assignment. If you teach math and assign 30 questions you then have to mark between 3600 to 4800 questions. If one assignment is given per day then you are spending your night and weekend grading papers.

Point is that people have no idea how much work that teachers put into their jobs. Many including myself, work from 7:30 to 9 or 10pm at nights and a good 6 hours on the weekend. I am not complaining about my job as I love teaching and my students, but I am sick of hearing how overpaid teachers are and how little work they do.

So you think that teacher's should not work for $? We all need to be privately wealthy in order to teach?

Do you work for no money? Hypocrite. Why do you think you are more important than I am?

Don't worry about a thing. No teacher will ever resent the hell out of your ignorant ass. They will be super-human for minimum wage and never ever act toward your children the way you act towards a highly educated professional.

How the fuck did you thing we got it done, in school for shits sake, there was no time during the day. My daughter a top teacher in a town in N. michigan is attempting to get out of the profession as soon as she can as it many other teachers. Retirement is mediocre based on higher three years and truly top teachers in many area's is not that high. My retirement is no higher than my social security. So egnorant ass hole you are go on believing what you will. You swill always want your borothers in poverty and wonder why the world around you is going to shit.

Logically it boils down to this:

If you chose a career as a teacher, that you know doesn't pay what you want to make, then you are either stupid or not qualified for anything except teaching.

Well I did teach in a medical college for a while, but they paid shit too.

Honestly, Brief, I thought I would change the world. I didn't care about $. I was young, full of energy, and naïve. Thanks to the attitudes like the ones on this post, I realized my mistake.

It is dumb to become a teacher. That's why I don't play the virtue signaling game anymore. You know the one about how much everyone respects teachers, which is total BS.

When young people ask me about being a teacher, I tell them the truth.

In the past teaching was a female dominated profession, thus, the pay scale was lower. It seems that it would be a good profession for parents with school age children.

Teaching is not a money making profession. Their salaries are paid for with tax dollars. No one wants their taxes to go up.

Many of you have already pointed out some of the benefits. They are off every weekend. They are off 2 months during the summer. They have most holidays off. Lots of time off during Christmas. They get a nice spring break.

Best of all is the pension! If they live long enough they can collect their pension for as many years as they worked. All they have to do is put up with someone else's bratty kids day in and day out for 30 years!

I respect teachers that don't bitch about pay, up to about the 6th grade, because after that it's unnecessary indoctrination.

Since most people work for $, why should teachers be different. It's truly hypocritical. You expect to be paid a reasonable salary for your education, experience and bona fides. But that's a no-no for teachers with families of their own to feed. Their family can go to hell, just as long as your family gets what it needs. Believe me, I get it. I know how non-teachers think. That's why I'm so disgusted.

And the parents of my students all expected extra because my family didn't matter. It was all about them. They wanted to call me at night, weekends, holidays to discuss them and theirs. The arrogance.

So they can hire fucking idiots to educate your children into the Cultural Marxist movement!
