Quoting: Anonymous Coward 755536[link to www.nasa.gov] Night Time Artificial Cloud Study Using NASA Sounding Rocket 09/10/09 A rocket experiment that may shed light on the highest clouds in the Earth’s atmosphere was conducted from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia on September 19, 2009. The experiment was launched on a NASA Black Brant XII Sounding Rocket. Black Brant Sounding Rocket The Charged Aerosol Release Experiment (CARE) was conducted by the Naval Research Laboratory and the Department of Defense Space Test Program using a NASA four-stage Black Brant XII suborbital sounding rocket. Using ground based instruments and the STP/NRL STPSat-1 spacecraft, scientists will study an artificial noctilucent cloud formed by the exhaust particles of the rocket’s fourth stage at about 173 miles altitude. Ground based cameras and radars were based at various observation stations along the Atlantic coast and in Bermuda. Because of the optical observations, the launch required clear skies not only at Wallops but also at the multiple observation stations. The Spatial Heterodyne IMager for MEsospheric Radicals instrument on the STPSat-1 spacecraft will track the CARE dust cloud for days or even months. The SHIMMER instrument has previously viewed natural noctilucent clouds for the past two years. The CARE is the first space viewing of an artificial noctilucent cloud. Data collected during the experiment will provide insight into the formation, evolution, and properties of noctilucent clouds, which are typically observed naturally at high latitudes. In addition to the understanding of noctilucent clouds, scientists will use the experiment to validate and develop simulation models that predict the distribution of dust particles from rocket motors in the upper atmosphere. Natural noctilucent clouds, also known as polar mesospheric clouds, are found in the upper atmosphere as spectacular displays that are most easily seen just after sunset. The clouds are the highest clouds in Earth’s atmosphere, located in the mesosphere around 50 miles altitude. They are normally too faint to be seen with the naked eye and are visible only when illuminated by sunlight from below the horizon while the Earth’s surface is in darkness. A team from government agencies and universities, led by the Naval Research Laboratory, is conducting the experiment. In addition to the Naval Research Laboratory, participants include the DoD STP, NASA, University of Michigan, Air Force Research Laboratory, Clemson University, Stanford University, University of Colorado, Penn State University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology/Haystack Observatory. Case closed in my opinion. It may be what we saw .. but what the heck where those rockets doing? Well, then what did I see in Wisconsin a couple of weeks ago? You got me interested in this subject now? I live in Wisconsin. A couple of weeks ago I saw the Space Station and Space Shuttle pass overhead. Not sure which one was leading, but there was a beam coming off the first one that looked similar to a flashlight cone shape. At first I dismissed the cone shape illumination, but after watching them pass overhead, there was definitely a light coming off either the space station or the shuttle. It would have to be the space station because the shuttle is back now right? |

Once I spotted it I did not take my eyes off of it as I wanted to see if it was a plane or helicopter. The light was a bright white larger than any plane I had ever seen including military. No motion at all. No flickering or blinking. The cone of light definitely was below and originated from the object. Nothing to add about the lingering glow after the light extinguished, but the glow definitely lingered and faded in a smokey kind of way. |

I went out to move my car and I glanced up at the sky and there was a very strange light formation. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 755536Now, there is not a cloud in the sky ... and brilliant stars all around .. and I saw this light formation that looked like the sun brilliantly shining through clouds during sunset and the light radiating out at various angles .. like a trapezoid .. a very controlled shape of light beams .. but there were no aircraft in the sky as far as I could tell. Then, I noticed the light morphing and almost disappearing like smoke dissipating into thin air .. just so weird to see light morph like that .. and then the angles got very irregular and the light turned into more of a 'puff' of light. I ran to get my husband quickly because I saw it changing .. when we looked up at the sky, he saw what was left over .. a very thin/transparent irregularly shaped light formation that just got more and more transparent and finally disappeared. He thought it was very strange as well. I have zero knowledge of UFOs .. does anyone know what this could have possibly been .. or does it sound like anything you have seen or heard of? Thanks. I read that NASA thing somebody posted on here. Same exact thing I saw over Wisconsin a either about 9 days ago. The light was coming off the craft with a smokey haze. There was something following the one with the smokey haze glow. |

The sky is hasy but relativly clear. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 303465The circle of motion is very wide . Yes! I see this too in Florida. It looks like those flood tower lights that casinos use, but they do some patterns I don't think those machines are setup to do. It is a very wide pattern and only appears to be visible when it hits a cloud. |

murnut User ID: 771600 United States 09/19/2009 11:29 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | September 19th, 2009 Mysterious lights at dusk prompt calls Posted: 11:11 PM ET (CNN) — A series of spooky lights in the clouds off the coast of the northeastern United States Saturday night sparked a flurry of phone calls to authorities and television news stations, with some startled residents worried that extra-terrestrials were landing. CNN affiliate stations from New Jersey to Massachusetts heard from dozens of callers who reported that the lights appeared as a cone shape shining down from the sky. But the source of the illumination turned out to be a little more down to earth — well, closer to Earth, to be exact. The lights were the result of an experimental rocket launch by NASA from the agency’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, a NASA spokesman told CNN. Keith Koehler said the Black Brant XII Sounding Rocket was launched to study the Earth’s highest clouds. The light came from an artificial noctilucent cloud formed by the exhaust particles of the rocket’s fourth stage about 173 miles high. Natural noctilucent clouds — also called “polar mesospheric clouds” — are “found in the upper atmosphere as spectacular displays that are most easily seen just after sunset,” according to a NASA statement published earlier this month. “The clouds are the highest clouds in Earth’s atmosphere, located in the mesosphere around 50 miles altitude.” Normally, noctilucent clouds are not visible to the naked eye and can only be seen when illuminated by sunlight below the horizon. The Saturday launch took place at 7:46 p.m., just as the sun was setting for the day. Observation stations on the ground and in satellites will track the artificial noctilucent clouds created by the rocket for months, NASA said. “Data collected during the experiment will provide insight into the formation, evolution, and properties of noctilucent clouds, which are typically observed naturally at high latitudes. “In addition to the understanding of noctilucent clouds, scientists will use the experiment to validate and develop simulation models that predict the distribution of dust particles from rocket motors in the upper atmosphere,” the NASA statement said. –CNN’s Greg Morrison contributed to this report. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 737050Not here in Florida anymore. As soon as the clouds passed, there wasn't any object to reflect off of. Perhaps when the clouds return, I'll check. But when you did see it, was it stationary? |

CLEAR SKY'S.. NOT A CLOUD IN SITE. look like the section from where the light was coming from was blank like something was there. you could see stars around the object.. ROCKET LAUNCH MY ASS!!!! THEY WOULD NOT LAUNCH OVER CITIES FOR SAFETY REASON. and when the do things at night the tell us so we know what to except. |

ANNONYMOUS User ID: 661006 United States 09/19/2009 11:53 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I saw a strange light in the northern sky as I left a relatives house in the North West suburbs of Detroit this evening around 9 pm. At first, I thought it was an airplane on its approach to Det Met Airport which would not be unusual. The unusual part was the light did not MOVE it just seemed to hang there motionless. Its position in relation to the other stars visible seemed to indicate that this was much closer to the horizon and perhaps not one of them. Weird. |

It then turned into like a smoke and was gone. I went to get my phone out to take a pic and it's was gone. I'm glad my friend and his kid saw it to. Their wasn't a cloud in the sky well not until that thing made one. If this is a NASA rocket i'd like to see their photos of it. Whatever it was I'm glad other people saw it to. It's nothing I've ever seen before. |
