A Large Safe and an Oxygen Tank
I am modifying a large safe to be a sort of pod that I will be able to survive in when 2012 comes and there are mile high tsunamis. As this massive wave approaches I will lock myself in my padded safe where there are 2 oxygen tanks, food and water. After the massive tsunami hits, I will safely swim up with my inflatable raft and search for dry land.

Re: A Large Safe and an Oxygen Tank
Does anyone have any suggestions on improvements or perhaps an opinion if this will work or not?

Re: A Large Safe and an Oxygen Tank
What if you end up 100 feet underwater??..

you'll need external flotation devices, remote activated.

What size oxygen tanks??...2 doesn't seem like enough,
you should consider a re-breather/scrubber system for air supply.

A Safe doesn't seem like the best designe for an escape pod,
especially if there are massive tsunamis..

Submit your design and we'll take a look..

Well I personally think it's a longshot. But there is 0% of survival otherwise for those who live under sea level.

I don't plan on being in there long. Hopefully there will be enough warming to jump in and seal myself in. After it passes I will immediately take my chances swimming out and up.

I chose a safe because it's going to take a severe beating.

Don't forget the 30 ton jack system to open your safe door when you are pressurized. Then, don't forget to have it outside, so you when you get you can swim up, don't want to have to navigate up the stairs and down the hall.

Sounds like a great plan, can I buy one? what a great business opportunity you have made for yourself, you should mass market this.

You won't be able to get out,the water pressure will keep you sealed in..

You need to build one of these..

I will have a small screw inserted into the safe. When it is nearing time for me to escape, I will remove the screw and slowly let the water leak in to neutralize the pressure. THen it should be easy to open the safe once it is completely filled with water.

OP, I think the safe is the right choice, don't forget to cover the sides with thick padding, so you don't hurt... I mean, so when you are tumbling along you will survive the impacts.

If your more than just a few feet under water, you're f-ed. The pressure will hold your down rock solid shut.

If you manage a way to open it, and are beyong a couple atmopheres pressure, it will severly damage/kill you.

Solution: Make a bigger bug out kit.

Be sure to use air, NOT oxygen. You will go into convulsions at more than 30 ft of water on oxygen. Taking a scuba course would be a good idea.

Re: A Large Safe and an Oxygen Tank
My biggest fear is I will survive the impact but the safe gets knocked over and lands door facing down. I would then be forever trapped and my safe becomes a tomb.

I am thinking of putting it completely underground with the door facing up. That way when the tsunamis near, i will run out side and jump in the safe. When the door is closed, it is parallel to the ground, maybe a few inches under. This will increase the odds that the safe does not get banged around and I will be able to open the door unless some heavy lands on top if it (i'll take the chance)

I then will slowly let the water sink in, neutralize the pressure, swim up and out with my food, water, and raft.

Re: A Large Safe and an Oxygen Tank
I see a few problems with your idea.

1) if you rae submerged the safe will leak
2) if you are submerged you will struggle to open the door.
3) How the hell do you close a safe fromt he inside?
4) what happens if the safe is lying door down?
4) what happens if something falls on the safe door?
5) Where are you going to store/enter the safe?
