A Fungus Amongst Us
Potentially deadly fungus spreading in U.S. and Canada

A potentially deadly strain of fungus is spreading among animals and people in the northwestern United States and the Canadian province of British Columbia, researchers reported on Thursday.

airborne fungus, called Cryptococcus gattii, usually only infects transplant and AIDS patients and people with otherwise compromised immune systems, but the new strain is genetically different, the researchers said.

"This novel fungus is worrisome because it appears to be a threat to otherwise healthy people," said Edmond Byrnes of Duke University in North Carolina, who led the study.

"The findings presented here document that the outbreak of C. gattii in Western North America is continuing to expand throughout this temperate region," the researchers said in their report, published in the Public Library of Science journal PLoS Pathogens here

"Our findings suggest further expansion into neighboring regions is likely to occur and aim to increase disease awareness in the region."

The new strain appears to be unusually deadly, with a mortality rate of about 25 percent among the 21 U.S. cases analyzed, they said.

The spore-forming fungus can cause symptoms in people and animals two weeks or more after exposure. They include a cough that lasts for weeks, sharp chest pain, shortness of breath, headache, fever, nighttime sweats and weight loss.

It has also turned up in cats, dogs, an alpaca and a sheep.

Additionally, there have been many problems with certain crops like wheat developing a fungus, some have even speculated GMO/GE so-called frankenfoods may have caused this as well.

Fungus problems in bat populations, butterflies, bees, and even Moose in my readings and research.

I suggest a moratorium on GMO/GE foods being grown only in contained and restricted environments.

Let the flags unfurl...:)

Re: A Fungus Amongst Us
Maybe the stuff is kicked off by frankenfoods or GMO/GE foods

I mean, the hair in the mouth thing in the poor lab animals they are testing this experimental stuff out on as well the population...as this should not happen normally right???

At the conclusion of the study, the authors surmise that such an astounding defect may be due to the diet of hamsters raised in the laboratory. They write, "This pathology may be exacerbated by elements of the food that are absent in natural food, such as genetically modified (GM) ingredients (GM soybean or maize meal) or contaminants (pesticides, mycotoxins, heavy metals, etc.)." Indeed, the number of hairy mouthed hamsters was much higher among the third generation of GM soy fed animals than anywhere Surov had seen before.

GM Crops Go to US High Court, Environmental Laws on the Line
By Matthew Berger
IPS, 26 April 2010
[link to www.ipsnews.net]

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments Tuesday in its first-ever case involving genetically modified crops. The decision in this case may have a significant impact on both the future of genetically modified foods and government oversight of that and other environmental issues.

The case, Monsanto Co. v. Geertson Seed Farms, revolves around an herbicide-resistant alfalfa, the planting of which has been banned in the U.S. since a federal court prohibited the multinational Monsanto from selling the seeds in 2007.

That decision found that the U.S. Department of Agriculture did not do a thorough enough study of the impacts the GM alfalfa would have on human health and the environment and ordered the agency to do another environmental impact statement (EIS) review.

Though a draft was released in December, "there is no anticipated date" for the final EIS, Suzanne Bond, a spokeswoman with the USDA division charged with regulating GM organisms - the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) - told IPS.

The law under which organic farmers were allowed to challenge USDA's oversight of the GM alfalfa, the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), is what may suffer the most from the court's eventual decision, which is expected in June at the earliest. The law "requires federal agencies to integrate environmental values into their decision-making processes by considering the environmental impacts of their proposed actions and reasonable alternatives to those actions", said Bond.

It is also a key legal tool for environmental groups seeking to challenge those agencies' decisions. The vulnerability of NEPA is a key reason so many such groups have joined the plaintiffs by filing amicus briefs against Monsanto in this case.

The Centre for Biological Diversity, one of those groups, does not normally get involved in GM issues, said the Centre's Noah Greenwald, but this case "has broad implications for how governments do environmental analysis and when they need to prepare impact statements".

"The broader implications are why we got in this," he told IPS.

Doug Gurian-Sherman, who wrote several expert opinions for the earlier cases in lower courts and is a senior scientist at the food and environment programme of the Union of Concerned Scientists, which has also filed an amicus brief, pointed to the need for the type of citizen oversight of the government's own oversight that is granted by statutes like NEPA.

"The big issue here is how much deference should be given to a regulatory agency and its expertise in doing its job versus how much access or deference should be given to the public in having the ability to challenge the agency in court," he said.

"The issue here then becomes how amenable is the Supreme Court going to be in terms of allowing citizens to bring suit against an agency that is not doing its job, and that I think is the gist of what this decision may be," he added.

But the legal implications are only half the story. Also implicated, at least potentially, is the future of GM crops in the U.S. and elsewhere.

In the original court case, organic farmers argued that the genes of the GM alfalfa would be carried to neighbouring - potentially miles away - non-GM alfalfa by the bees that pollinate the crop and that genetic contamination would hurt their ability to market their alfalfa under the label "organic". This would also preclude them from exporting to countries that prohibit GM crops.

"Consumers may not accept products cross-contaminated with genetically-engineered components and you can test for those and testing is done pretty routinely and therefore the market could reject the contaminated organic crops," explained Gurian-Sherman.

In addition to this economic impact, they have argued that the planting of the Roundup Ready alfalfa that is at issue here, used in conjunction with the Monsanto-made herbicide Roundup, may also lead to increased herbicide-resistance in weeds.

APHIS largely dismissed this as an issue in its original analysis, says Gurian-Sherman, "even though over the last couple years the incidence of resistant weeds and the economic impacts they're having largely contradicts APHIS's analysis."

Though questions over the environmental and economic impacts of growing GM crops have existed for decades, the issue remains extremely complicated from an ethical and health perspective. Depending on how broad the Supreme Court's decision ends up being, it could go a long way to deciding the fate of other GM crops.

A case on GM sugar beets is currently ongoing. The court has allowed plantings this year, but has reserved the right to prohibit them in the future. The USDA is in the midst of preparing a draft impact statement for both these sugar beets and a GM creeping bentgrass.

Gurian-Sherman has serious concerns about the agency's actions on GM crops generally. "There's been several indications beside this case that USDA has not been really doing an adequate job regulating genetically-engineered seed…As a scientist, having reviewed a number of environmental assessments that the agency has done, in my opinion they've often done a very lax, scientifically often unsupportable job in their analyses. It's not like they've been completely negligent, but in my opinion they've made a number of errors in either scientific reasoning or in their data or data analysis."

Since 1992, USDA's APHIS division has granted non-regulated status to GM plants in response to 80 petitions, according to Bond, including multiple varieties of corn, soybeans, cotton, rapeseed, potato, tomato, squash, papaya, plum, rice, sugar beet, tobacco, alfalfa, flax, and chicory.

Tuesday's decision may have a significant influence on how that list changes in the future. [link to www.gmwatch.org]

Super resistant weeds are being created as well as more and more pesticides are thrown into our environment and our bodies.

However, a large and growing body of scientific research and on-the-ground experience indicate that GMOs fail to live up to these claims. Instead, GM crops:

* can be toxic, allergenic or less nutritious than their natural counterparts
* can disrupt the ecosystem, damage vulnerable wild plant and animal populations and harm biodiversity
* increase chemical inputs (pesticides, herbicides) over the long term
* deliver yields that are no better, and often worse, than conventional crops
* cause or exacerbate a range of social and economic problems
* are laboratory-made and, once released, harmful GMOs cannot be recalled from the environment.

The scientifically demonstrated risks and clear absence of real benefits have led experts to see GM as a clumsy, outdated technology. They present risks that we need not incur, given the availability of effective, scientifically proven, energy-efficient and safe ways of meeting current and future global food needs.

This paper presents the key scientific evidence – 114 research studies and other authoritative documents – documenting the limitations and risks of GM crops and the many safer, more effective alternatives available today.

remember our RED BUG man and his allegations of genetic manipulations set to destroy many:
FOR the first time, a fungus has been genetically modified to be more deadly to the weed it blights. The snag is that the GM fungus kills crop plants as well.

While the modified fungus will not be released as a result of the findings, the case shows how genetic modification can have unintended consequences. It is also proof, were any needed, that biotechnology could be harnessed to create weapons that attack crops (see "'Act now' plea on bioterror threat").

The fungus was modified to attack velvetleaf weed (Abutilon theophrasti). As it is a close relative of cotton, most weedkillers that target it destroy the crop as well as the weed. "Herbicides don't work, and that's where you have to head in with biocontrol," says Jonathan Gressel, a plant physiologist at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel....

In what might be seen as another reason to panic, public health officials have issued a warning about a "potentially deadly airborne fungus" spreading in the Pacific Northwest. The fungus was first seen 10 years ago in Canada and has since spread through Washington with recent cases in both Portland and Northern California. The "killer fungus" has triggered an infection in its victims that can cause pneumonia and meningitis. According to records, a little more than 50 cases have been reported, with 10 of those being fatal.

Scary? Yes. But not panic worthy. At least that's the message the CDC told WebMD.

"We wouldn't recommend that people change their habits in any way," Julie Harris, PhD, MPH, a staff epidemiologist with the CDC, tells WebMD. "We wouldn't recommend people stay indoors or don't go hiking or don't go outdoors."

The infection only happens from inhaling the microbial pathogen, but even then officials say that contraction is extremely rare. Also of importance is that it's not contagious, meaning another person cannot infect you.

If you do hike in these areas, keep in mind the symptoms associated with the infection. If infected, these symptoms will arrive two to eight months after exposure: severe headache, fever, chills, and shortness of breath.

While we at Fit don't want to freak you out, we know how important it is to be aware of what's out there. Since hiking presents a new set of challenges – bugs and rocky terrain come to mind — make sure to always play it extra safe.

Re: A Fungus Amongst Us
first the GMO argument is not so well believable seeing as how any farmers located on the originating NORTH AMERICAN discovery island of vancouver are quite anti GMO and have several lawsuits against monsanto

this doesnt mean there arent GMO, but it is unlikely that the island being isolated and relatively new to such crops would influence such an outbreak

The fungus, known as Cryptococcus gattii, was previously found in the tropics, where it has frequently been associated with Eucalyptus trees. But C. gattii was found in Vancouver Island in 1999 and has since been linked to disease in humans and animals, both in Canada and the United States. It spreads through spores carried by wind or when people or animals thread infected ground where the fungus is located.

"The continued expansion of C. gattii in the United States is ongoing, and the diversity of hosts increasing," the study says. It notes that cases have been observed in urban and rural areas, and have occurred in a variety of mammals. Although rare, little is currently known about how or why certain humans and animals have become infected. The study's authors warn that the threat C. gattii poses to agricultural and domestic animals "is significant and thus the need for cooperation among health officials is critical."

Personally in the last few years it seems many more were coming in with similar symptoms...However, it is gaining momentum with many citing GMO/GE frankenfoods.

I started a few threads in the the early 2000...then another here in 2005

From what I understand this is something that is located within the soil and disturbed, possibly by a plant/tree seeking nutrients, an earthquake uprooting the soil, GMO crops reacting oddly to certain conditions in the soil.....even the CDC isnt exactly sure why it is choosing its carriers and what its modern mode of transport is

but a very interesting topic for sure

* Imprecise Technology—A genetic engineer moves genes from one organism to another. A gene can be cut precisely from the DNA of an organism, but the insertion into the DNA of the target organism is basically random. As a consequence, there is a risk that it may disrupt the functioning of other genes essential to the life of that organism. (Bergelson 1998)

* Side Effects—Genetic engineering is like performing heart surgery with a shovel. Scientists do not yet understand living systems completely enough to perform DNA surgery without creating mutations which could be harmful to the environment and our health. They are experimenting with very delicate, yet powerful forces of nature, without full knowledge of the repercussions. (Washington Times 1997, The Village Voice 1998)

* Widespread Crop Failure—Genetic engineers intend to profit by patenting genetically engineered seeds. This means that, when a farmer plants genetically engineered seeds, all the seeds have identical genetic structure. As a result, if a fungus, a virus, or a pest develops which can attack this particular crop, there could be widespread crop failure. (Robinson 1996)

* Threatens Our Entire Food Supply—Insects, birds, and wind can carry genetically altered seeds into neighboring fields and beyond. Pollen from transgenic plants can cross-pollinate with genetically natural crops and wild relatives. All crops, organic and non-organic, are vulnerable to contamination from cross-pollination. (Emberlin et al 1999)

more from above link

Health Hazards

* No Long-Term Safety Testing—Genetic engineering uses material from organisms that have never been part of the human food supply to change the fundamental nature of the food we eat. Without long-term testing no one knows if these foods are safe.

* Toxins—Genetic engineering can cause unexpected mutations in an organism, which can create new and higher levels of toxins in foods. (Inose 1995, Mayeno 1994)

* Allergic Reactions—Genetic engineering can also produce unforeseen and unknown allergens in foods. (Nordlee 1996)

* Decreased Nutritional Value—Transgenic foods may mislead consumers with counterfeit freshness. A luscious-looking, bright red genetically engineered tomato could be several weeks old and of little nutritional worth.

* Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria—Genetic engineers use antibiotic-resistance genes to mark genetically engineered cells. This means that genetically engineered crops contain genes which confer resistance to antibiotics. These genes may be picked up by bacteria which may infect us. (New Scientist 1999)

* Problems Cannot Be Traced—Without labels, our public health agencies are powerless to trace problems of any kind back to their source. The potential for tragedy is staggering.

* Side Effects can Kill—37 people died, 1500 were partially paralyzed, and 5000 more were temporarily disabled by a syndrome that was finally linked to tryptophan made by genetically-engineered bacteria. (Mayeno 1994)

Environmental Hazards

* Increased use of Herbicides—Scientists estimate that plants genetically engineered to be herbicide-resistant will greatly increase the amount of herbicide use. (Benbrook 1999) Farmers, knowing that their crops can tolerate the herbicides, will use them more liberally.

* More Pesticides—GE crops often manufacture their own pesticides and may be classified as pesticides by the EPA. This strategy will put more pesticides into our food and fields than ever before.

* Ecology may be damaged—The influence of a genetically engineered organism on the food chain may damage the local ecology. The new organism may compete successfully with wild relatives, causing unforeseen changes in the environment. (Metz 1997)

* Gene Pollution Cannot Be Cleaned Up—Once genetically engineered organisms, bacteria and viruses are released into the environment it is impossible to contain or recall them. Unlike chemical or nuclear contamination, negative effects are irreversible.

DNA is actually not well understood. 97% of human DNA is called ³junk² because scientists do not know its function. The workings of a single cell are so complex, no one knows the whole of it. (San Diego Union-Tribune 2000) Yet the biotech companies have already planted millions of acres with genetically engineered crops, and they intend to engineer every crop in the world.

The concerns above arise from an appreciation of the fundamental role DNA plays in life, the gaps in our understanding of it, and the vast scale of application of the little we do know. Even the scientists in the Food and Drug administration have expressed concerns. (Alliance for Biointegrity) some have very slow connections...or CMEs are distressing the net.

In Northern California, in the town of Davis a now former Monsanto employee set up three biotechnology companies. The first company went out of business shortly after it's creator left. Some employees from the second firm, Agraquest, became seriously ill. The Agraquest company went out of its way to prevent the very ill people from receiving adequate medical care, provide for time lost from work and in general did everything possible to mislead the California Workers Compensation system.

Was it because they were luring high powered, well connected investors and could not chance any negative publicity?

Were the people that participated in what appears to be a genuine coverup also financially involved?

Read the material and decide for yourself. Everyone, including the sleepy little college town of Davis seems to
have forgotten about United Nations 2003 - The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. Follow the index down to learn more.

This is a new topic for most people, but it is one that people must begin to understand for their own safety.
Genetically altered biological products are not natural. Both types of products - chemical or biological - can make people very sick and both types of products can and do kill. Just because a product is natural does not make it safe!

SOME BASIC BACKGROUND ON THE TOPIC: The French documentary, named “The world according to Monsanto” which was directed by independent filmmaker Marie-Monique Robin, paints a grim picture of a company with a long track record of environmental crimes and health scandals.

We need to sue them to the end of the hellgate and let them travel in....hit them where they damage so many...remember the "substantially equivalent..." needs to be ROLLED BACK or no one will get anywhere

October 04, 2009 — On September 9, 2009 at a meeting of the California Fraud Assessment Commission FAC in Sacramento, Sandi Trend who is the mother of injured biotech worker David Bell charged that the District Attorneys in Yolo County and Sacramento were failing to prosecute fraud by AgraQuest owner Pam Marrone and Liberty Mutual her insurance company. Trend's son David Bell was sickened at the Davis based company and Marrone and Liberty Mutual refused to provide his healthcare despite evidence that he had over genetically engineered products in his body. She has presented this evidence to both offices as well as agents of the California Department of Insurance. For more information on this case go to [link to biotechawareness.com]

Re: A Fungus Amongst Us

November 18, 2009 — If you saw the film "Food Inc.", you heard Michael Pollan talking about the prosecution of farmers across the country by Monsanto for patent infringement. Starting several years ago, CFS discovered that Monsanto, the worlds leading agricultural biotechnology company, has used heavy-handed investigations and ruthless prosecutions that have fundamentally changed the way many American farmers farm. The agribusiness giant has sued hundreds of farmers over GMO crops, and has been awarded more than $20 million from these farmers. The result has been nothing less than an assault on the foundations of farming practices and traditions that have endured for centuries in this country and millennia around the world, including one of the oldest the right to save and replant crop seed.

CFS has been at the forefront of protecting farmers from these assaults by Monsanto. We have uncovered this startling practice of Monsanto suing farmers via our groundbreaking report Monsanto vs. U.S. Farmers. We've helped and participated in farmers legal defense again Monsanto. And we've set up a hotline for farmers to call if they're facing lawsuits or threats from Monsanto to help them get guidance and legal referrals. Please help CFS stop this corporate persecution of our farmers in its tracks by supporting our work today. Read more and donate today at www.centerforfoodsafety.org.

Companies like Monsanto can get away with these things because they have convinced the courts to treat them as people--with the same constitutional rights as ordinary citizens of the United States. These companies then use the courts to strike down regulations as "unconstitutional" because they violate their "rights"
If we want real reform, we need a Constitutional Amendment to abolish "Corporate Personhood" and ban corporations from politics.

[link to www.warnthepeople.org]
THURSDAY, April 22 (HealthDay News) -- A strain of potentially lethal airborne fungus recently discovered in Oregon may soon spread to California and other neighboring areas, scientists warn.

Several people in Oregon have died after being infected with the new VGIIc genotype of Cryptococcus gattii. In the 21 Pacific Northwest cases analyzed by researchers, the strain has a death rate of about 25 percent.

"This novel fungus is worrisome because it appears to be a threat to otherwise healthy people. Typically, we see this fungal disease associated with transplant recipients and HIV-infected patients, but that is not what we are seeing," said Edmond Byrnes III, a graduate student in the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology at Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina, in a news release.

I hope I do not have this fungus - I have had stage IV breast cancer with liver metastasis since 2006 and am doing well - I am using the baking soda but I have recently became short of breath - no one can tell me why - they have checked my lungs for cancer and they are all clear - they have checked my heart and they are now having me take asthma meds (I have had asthma my entire life) however they are not really working - not sure what is wrong - I am taking elderberry, garlic, vit. c, green tea with lemon, applecider vinegar with baking soda mixed in 100% natural apple juice and drinking 100% natural pomegranate juice- I am not sure what else to do and no one can seem to tell me why I am short of breath - this has been going on for 7 days now.
