They showed the same thing on the Frontline show last night. They were talking about Indian Point in New York. It's past design life and they are looking to renew the license. A woman in the audience said to the panel "I have never seen you deny one of these" (or something like that, I was pretty sleepy). I will be watching it again, I fell asleep so missed at least half of it.

Nuke support in UK hits record high
Keeping calm and carrying on

Public support for nuclear energy has reached an all-time high in the UK, less than a year after the Fukushima incident. There is an interesting gender gap, though.

Pollsters Ipsos MORI, who buttonholed about 1,000 Brits last month for its survey, found that 40 per cent of the sample [PDF] now hold favourable views of nuclear power, compared to 19 per cent who don't. Men (55 per cent) are much more likely than women (26 per cent) to view it positively. Nuclear energy has been viewed more positively than negatively since 2004.

Highly radioactive water found near No.2 reactor
The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant has found 500 tons of highly radioactive water near the crippled No.2 reactor.

On Thursday, the utility found around 500 tons of contaminated water in a pit near the No.2 reactor. The pit has a valve which is used for pumping in seawater.

The analysis of the contaminated water shows it has 16,200 becquerels of radioactive cesium per cubic centimeter. That represents the highest level of radioactive substances found in this month's survey.

TEPCO pays $320 million to Fukushima
Tokyo Electric Power Company has paid Fukushima Prefecture about 320 million dollars to help cover the cost of health checks for local people affected by the Fukushima Daiichi plant accident.

Tokyo Electric made the payment on Thursday based on an agreement with the prefecture. The amount may be only the first part of such compensation.

The sum is to be used for equipment called whole body counters that measure levels of internal exposure to radiation, as well as other health check programs.

High levels of radiation detected in ash
The Environment Ministry says high levels of radioactive cesium have been found in ash from firewood kept near the crippled nuclear power plant in Fukushima Prefecture, northeastern Japan.

The ministry informed Fukushima and 7 other prefectures that their municipalities should collect and dispose of contaminated ash.

The ministry found that the maximum radioactive cesium level of the ash exceeded 40,000 becquerels per kilogram.
