TEPCO to check interior of crippled Fukushima No. 1 reactor
Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Monday it plans to check the interior of the crippled No. 1 reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant between late August and September by inserting a camera into the primary containment vessel.

Of the Nos. 1 to 3 reactors that suffered meltdowns in last year's nuclear accident, the utility has so far inserted an endoscope into the No. 2 reactor and found the water level was at a lower-than-expected 60 centimeters, a sign that a large part of the water injected into it is leaking from the vessel.

Tepco may try to remove unused fuel assemblies from feared No. 4 pool
[link to www.japantimes.co.jp]

[snip]

Since the unused fuel is not generating heat from fission, it is less dangerous to handle than the spent fuel. The utility, known as Tepco, is hoping to determine how damaged the unused assemblies are and to devise ways to store them.

When the magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami struck on March 11, 2011, tipping the flawed plant into crisis, the fuel in the core of unit 4 was already in the spent-fuel pool because the reactor was being refurbished and was inactive. The pool contains 1,535 fuel assemblies, including 204 unused ones.

Tepco plans to start removing the fuel in the pool by the end of 2013 as part of work to decommission reactors 1 through 4, which were crippled by meltdowns and explosions in the disaster.

I believe I read that they were going to reload #4 with MOX assemblies in the next couple of days around the time off the plant failure and were getting ready or had(the more common reference) removed #4's spent fuel rods when the earth quake hit...

so many miles (1 year+)of digging and reading.. where the hell was that...? too old...memory hole

anyway... could these unused rods be the MOX assemblies I read about???

Hmmmm...

think about it...
just opened reactor... hot spent fuel rod assembly...
lid off reactor....
new MOX fuel assemblies standing by waiting to be loaded...

in tepcos new photos you can see both the inner and outer reactor caps in their storage positions...
took me a moment to put together what the 2 domed objects were.
the smaller one on the edge on the upper floor to the side of the large cap with all the bolts on it with the tripod on it is the inner reactor lid... it does confirm that the #4 reactor was open at the time of the plant failure...

Yes Silver. You've seen that is true in the very high resolution images shared by Jim Stone haven't you?

Yes, reactor 4 was open at the time of the plant failure, one can see in the high resolution photo.

I used tepcos own current photo release to confirm and make this statement..
its better that way.

I don't buy the Nuke in the plant part.. it would not have been needed...

however I do believe a Stuxnet variation has hit numerous plant cooling systems over the last year or so...

gate controls use embedded systems...

I know Seimens controls backed out of the Nuke line and shifted big time after this...

But thats just me

but I do think that unused load is made of MOX fuel assemblies that were not loaded...

anyway they draw this picture, they have to "store" the mox that they have in fp4, regardless of where that may be.

there were visions in the pipeline of exporting the enirched fuel, as per process to france and byond, but the gig was up thanks to mother nature. now they find themselves in a true bind in that they are caught out by mother nature. what to so with all that highly enriched product but put it back and keep those well oiled wheels a-rolling... oops, forgot about that bit "what to do with higly enriched 'aka, poisonous' uranium when we don't need it for weapons?... shrugsa and decides to make a multi-million dollar business-slash-think-tank on where we might store it all for a few thousand years....

Mainichi uncovers more secret nuclear commission meetings
[link to mainichi.jp]

[snip]

The revelations come just days after the Mainichi news team discovered similar secret meetings held over 2011 and early 2012, with the latest on April 24. The government has invested vast sums in the badly delayed nuclear fuel cycle project, which foresees reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel into MOX fuel to be burned in special reactors.

A source at the Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry familiar with the case lamented that government and industry officials involved in nuclear energy had remained unchanged even after the meltdowns at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant.

"When I heard that preparations for the new policy outline were being made secretly only by those in favor of nuclear energy, I thought the culture had not changed since the nuclear disaster," he said.

The containment cap from reactor 4 is in its storage position. It was definitely not on the reactor at the time of the EQ. It was visible in the first pictures I saw last year.

Considering the above revelation concerning secret meetings and the fact that they had an outage at reactor 4 to reline the reactor, it is not a stretch to think they were planning to use MOX in reactor 4 on restart. MOX was in use in reactor 3 so we know it is on site.

Projecting from that.. one could assume MOX in the fuel pond. MOX could be in any or all ponds, for that matter... including the common pond.

unfortunately I have to agree with almost all of it's basic statements...
I've been following some of this stuff since Fulaja(sp).

There is a whole new group of hot DU weapons out there made from reactor core materials...
they don't show on the standard DU TEST because they use different isotope variations/concentration(its not suppossed to be hot). simple description.
Old DU does not come from a reactor core rather from the processing of high grade oar into fuel sources...
"new DU weapons are made with the hot leftovers from the reactor forming incredibly hot shells loads..forming some rather nasty ceramic oxides in the process.

It could be argued that FUKU was a cornerstone of this production line... which is why the closed set operation guided tours...

its all about the hot decay products recovered from the fuel cycle...

MOX is even better for its dense weapon nasties...

putting this in battlefeild weapons means radiation/exposure for your own soldiers as well

List of nuclear power accidents by country
[link to en.wikipedia.org]

[snip]

Japan

2 Nov 1978
Fukushima No1, Japan
Japan's first criticality accident at No 3 reactor, this accident was hidden for 29 years and reported on 22 Mar 2007

1981
Tsuruga, Japan
Almost 300 workers were exposed to excessive levels of radiation after a fuel rod ruptured during repairs at the Tsuruga Nuclear Power Plant.

December 1995
Tsuruga, Japan
The fast breeder Monju Nuclear Power Plant sodium leak. State-run operator Donen was found to have concealed videotape footage that showed extensive damage to the reactor.

March 1997
Tokaimura, Japan
The Tokaimura nuclear reprocessing plant fire and explosion. 37 workers were exposed to low doses of radiation. Donen later acknowledged it had initially suppressed information about the fire.

18 Jun 1999
Shiga, Japan
A fuel loading system malfunctioned and set off an uncontrolled nuclear reaction and explosion.

September 1999
Tokaimura, Japan
The criticality accident at the Tokai fuel fabrication facility. Hundreds of people were exposed to radiation and two workers later died. This is not a nuclear power plant accident, however.

2002
Onagawa, Japan
Two workers were exposed to a small amount of radiation and suffered minor burns during a fire.

9 Aug 2004
Mihama, Japan
A steam explosion at the Mihama-3 station; the subsequent investigation revealed a serious lack in systematic inspection in Japanese nuclear plants, which led to a massive inspection program.

2006
Fukushima No1, Japan
A small amount of radioactive steam was released at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant and it escaped the compound.

16 Jul 2007
Kashiwazaki, Japan
a severe earthquake (measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale) hit the region where Tokyo Electric's Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant is located and radioactive water spilled into the Sea of Japan; as of March 2009, all of the reactors remain shut down for damage verification and repairs; the plant with seven units was the largest single nuclear power station in the world.

December 2009
Hamaoka, Japan
Leakage accident of Radio active water. 34 workers were exposed to radiation

11 Mar 2011
Fukushima No1, Japan
The world's second INES 7 accident. A magnitude 9.0 earthquake and associated tsunami triggered cooling problems at Fukushima 1 & 2 stations with several reactors. Hydrogen explosions cause structural damage, and loss of coolant results in meltdowns in three units and a fire in overheated spent fuel rods. Radioactive steam was released into the atmosphere, and highly radioactive water spilled into the ocean through utility trenches. Some immediate injuries resulted.

18 Mar 2011
Fukushima No2, Japan
Japanese Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency reported that the condition of reactors #1, #2 and #4 of Fukushima Dai 2 Plant is equivalent to INES level 3.

Radioactive bluefin tuna crossed the Pacific to US
[link to news.yahoo.com]

[snip]

The results "are unequivocal. Fukushima was the source," said Ken Buesseler of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, who had no role in the research.

Bluefin tuna absorbed radioactive cesium from swimming in contaminated waters and feeding on contaminated prey such as krill and squid, the scientists said. As the predators made the journey east, they shed some of the radiation through metabolism and as they grew larger. Even so, they weren't able to completely flush out all the contamination from their system.

"That's a big ocean. To swim across it and still retain these radionuclides is pretty amazing," Fisher said.

Radioactive materials spread from Fukushima plant
Japanese scientists say radioactive substances from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant may have been dispersed all around the globe in about 40 days.

A research team led by Akira Watanabe, a Fukushima University professor and meteorologist, measured the daily concentration of airborne radioactive substances in Fukushima City since May last year, about 2 months after the nuclear disaster occurred.

The research results show that the concentration of radioactive materials in the air during the first month of the survey was on average 0.0048 becquerels per cubic meter.

TEPCO to remove unused fuel from No. 4 reactor
The operator of the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant has decided to remove 2 unused fuel rods from a storage pool at the No. 4 reactor to look for damage.

This is in preparation for the removal of a large number of the 1,535 used and unused fuel rods stored in the pool, which could pose a threat in the event of another earthquake.

Tokyo Electric Power Company intends to remove the 2 fuel rods from the pool in July. Removal of unused fuel is not as dangerous as taking out used fuel.

If successful, TEPCO plans to start to remove the remainder of the fuel next year.

Radioactive cesium from Fukushima found in tuna caught off U.S.
Trace amounts of radioactive cesium released from Japan's crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant have been found in bluefin tuna caught off the western coast of the United States, according to a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences published online Monday.

While the amounts are not considered a health hazard, the detection reflects the magnitude of the nuclear disaster, which resulted in the release of massive amounts of radioactive materials into the atmosphere and sea.

Radioactive Bluefin Tuna Caught Off Coast Of San Diego
--snip--
To rule out the possibility that the radiation was carried by ocean currents or deposited in the sea through the atmosphere, the team also analyzed yellowfin tuna, found in the eastern Pacific, and bluefin that migrated to Southern California before the nuclear crisis. They found no trace of cesium-134 and only background levels of cesium-137 left over from nuclear weapons testing in the 1960s.

Japan's Former Leader Condemns Nuclear Power
[link to www.post-gazette.com]

[snip]

In his testimony, Mr. Kan said that Japan's plant safety was inadequate because energy policy had been hijacked by the "nuclear village" -- a term for the power companies and pro-nuclear regulators and researchers that worked closely together to promote the industry. He said the only way to break their grip was to form a new regulatory agency staffed with true outsiders, such as American and European experts.

"Gorbachev said in his memoirs that the Chernobyl accident exposed the sicknesses of the Soviet system," Mr. Kan said, referring to the 1986 explosion of a reactor in Ukraine, which spewed radiation across a wide swath of Europe. "The Fukushima accident did the same for Japan."

~

In a post earlier I listed japan nuclear accidents and there were a few that illustrate the result of this collusion. The hiding of incidents, the lying by omission, the lack of consequences.. This attitude in the nuclear industry has led to accidents all over the world.

Same with the BP disaster. The Gusher in the Gulf. All industry, in fact has this disease of 'business as usual'. 'Go along, to get along'. We all know how it is..

Should not happen in the nuke industry. The consequences are TMI, Chernobyl and Fukushima Daiichi.

Will the next one be here? It's a roll of the dice.
The NRC has decided, by extending 21 of 22 Mark I reactors for twenty years past the design lifespan, that it is worth the risk..

I should say 'flawed design lifespan' when referring to the Mark I. But that is an oxymoron, assuming a reasonable assessment that a flawed design would have zero lifespan in a perfect world.

Soaring Costs Plague Calif. Nuke Plant Undergoing Repair
[link to insideclimatenews.org]

[snip]

The cost of stepped-up inspections from federal regulators: Unknown.

When things go wrong at a nuclear plant, the NRC sends extra inspectors to review the issue and supervise the plant operator's actions. But their work comes at a cost.

San Onofre will be billed $273 per hour for each extra NRC inspector called upon to assist with the investigation. The NRC already sent an "augmented inspection team" to San Onofre to review the steam generator problems—a team that included two people beginning in late April or early March, but grew to seven people on March 19. They completed most of their on-site work at the end of March.

The scope of the team's work was expanded at one point, and team members sometimes come and go, making it difficult to tally the hours of work that will be billed to San Onofre, according to NRC spokesman Victor Dricks. The same team members will conduct another evaluation once SCE submits a report to the NRC outlining the company's conclusions, actions and proposal for restarting the reactors.

Testing Food For Fukushima Radiation, Swiss Find Chernobyl Contamination Instead

The results mean that 25 years after the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl, dangerous levels of radioactivity are still making their way into the food system. Etter said that what surprised him most was that the declared cesium values were three times lower than what was actually found in his lab’s tests, and that Ukraine had cleared the shipment for export. “It makes you wonder if those declarations are worth anything at all,” he said.

Imagine how much worse, if they had not capped Chernobyl.

Many aren't aware of it, but the risk of nuclear technology as it is now, trumps all other issues in both importance and probability.

It is something very close and already too late in some aspects, and yet humanity as a whole is mostly asleep on the issue and in the back seat, while the psychopathic driver(s) play a road game of chicken with major risk, and the psycho in this case has already blown through some walls.

...
These nuclear problems in general, are the outgrowth of a diseased meme of human government.

A meme has many of the characteristics of an organic life form in that it tends to perpetuate and amplify itself, but memes are alive in the realm of behavior patterns of a group of humans rather than in DNA.

However as an independent life form, the meme of human government has an overall intelligence level somewhere near that of a virus or single celled organism, an intelligence level far below even any of the individuals who participate in it's existence.

Under current conditions I see the meme of human government to be a cancer, attempting to grow and control way beyond it's steady state bounds.

Japan halts review of national nuclear policy after draft report scandal
[link to enformable.com]

[snip]

The Japan Atomic Energy Commission has decided to suspend a review of the country’s nuclear policy guidelines currently being conducted by an expert panel after some of the panelists expressed concerns over the selection of some of the panel, which includes members from power companies and research institutes that are promoting nuclear power.

The experts also criticized a working group set up by the commission which had distributed an unreleased draft report distributed in closed door sessions to people involved in the government and in the power companies who were promoting nuclear power including the Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan, Japan Nuclear Fuel Ltd. and the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy.

The expert panel said it is still not clear why the working group distributed the draft, and called for an investigation by a third-party. The panel strongly criticized the atomic energy commission.

Until the majority of negative public opinion overwhelms the nuclear industry spin, we will continue to live on the edge of disaster..

I tend to think that most people will not wake up until they feel that it is in their own backyards..

Of course, it already is... they just don't realize it.
