Experts warn tsunami debris may harm ecosystem
Japanese researchers are warning that debris from the giant tsunami that hit northeastern Japan on March 11th last year may harm marine ecosystems over the long run.

A team from Kagoshima University crossed the Pacific from Japan to Hawaii during August and September on board a training ship to visually check the presence of debris.

The researchers spotted more than 900 items, including styrene foam and plastic objects, fishing buoys and timber. Some of the debris was found in the stomachs of tuna the researchers caught.

Stress hormone detected in Fukushima dogs
Japanese researchers have detected high levels of a stress hormone in dogs abandoned in Fukushima Prefecture in the aftermath of last year's nuclear accident.

The team from Azabu University's veterinary medicine department carried out check-ups on 17 dogs over a 10-month period until March. Most of the dogs were being looked after by public healthcare centers.

The researchers detected cortisol, a type of stress hormone, in the dogs' urine.

The figure of 300 nanograms per milligram of urine was 5 to 10 times higher than the levels found in dogs at health centers in other prefectures.

TEPCO criticized for ending damages to displaced Fukushima women who marry

TOKYO — Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) said Thursday it has discontinued paying compensation for psychological injury to displaced women in Fukushima Prefecture who have since married.

After last year’s nuclear disaster, many single women had to move to temporary housing. Some have since married, leading TEPCO to argue that they are no longer in need of compensation as their husbands are most likely able to provide for them, Sankei Shimbun reported.

Qatar's LNG turning into Japan's energy lifeline
Ever since Japan's nuclear power plants shut down following the 2011 disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex, Qatar, a major producer of liquefied natural gas, is acquiring the status of a "lifeline" for Japan's utilities.

As the utilities have rushed to boost thermal power generation to make up for the loss of atomic energy, Japan's LNG imports surged to some 5.4 trillion yen in fiscal 2011, up from 3.55 trillion yen a year earlier, according to trade data.

PALISADES NUCLEAR PLANT LER: Degraded Condition Due to Control Rod Drive Mechanism Housing Assembly Crack (3" through-wall crack, crack before break) MUST READ

On August 12, 2012, with the plant in Mode 3, a primary coolant system pressure boundary leak was identified in control rod drive mechanism (CRDM) number 24 upper housing assembly. Upon identification, the plant was placed in Mode 5 to effect repairs.

Initial examination, using liquid penetrant testing in the area of the leak, identified a 1/8” x 1/16” L-shaped crack indication on the outside surface of the type 31 6L stainless steel pipe section of the CRDM-24 upper housing assembly. Subsequent non-destructive and destructive examinations revealed a total of nine axially oriented crack indications, located in the proximity of an inside surface weld onlay. One of the nine crack indications was a through-wall crack at the leak point approximately 3” in length.

Japan said:

The Embassy of Japan stated that the idea that Haiti’s rice was grown near Fukushima is contrary to reality. The rice that arrived in Haiti recently was actually grown in the United States and imported to Japan throughout 2009 and 2010, long before the March 11th, 2011, disasters. The rice wasn’t even stored in areas near the Fukushima evacuation zones, but rather in the cities of Ishikari and Otaru, both on the northern island of Hokkaido, and over 650 kilometers (404 miles) away from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.
