Xcel Energy still making big investments in nuclear power

Three U.S. utilities are closing older nuclear reactors, but Xcel Energy is investing $1.8 billion to keep its two Minnesota plants operating for another two decades.

As some U.S. utilities are abandoning old nuclear power plants, Xcel Energy says it’s investing $1.8 billion to extend the life of its 40-year-old Minnesota reactors.

At the company’s Prairie Island nuclear plant in Red Wing, Minn., 1,550 contract workers this fall will replace two massive steam generators — at $280 million, its single most costly improvement project. The plant was completed in 1974 at a cost of $350 million.

The Minneapolis-based utility’s other reactor, in Monticello, Minn., also is getting a $600 million upgrade that aims to keep it running safely and boost its output by nearly 13 percent.

A smart friend noticed that the only reason to empty these leaking pools into the basement of #6 turbine, would be to flush it into the sea from there.

TEPCO sued over deaths of elderly patients during Fukushima evacuation
Noriko Abe is demanding answers over the death of her 98-year-old father-in-law who was forced to take a 230-kilometer bus trip lasting more than eight hours in the confusion following the Fukushima nuclear accident.

Dozens of hospital patients died during the arduous evacuation process, which was hampered by poor communications, a lack of manpower and the sheer chaos in the aftermath of two natural disasters. At least one medical worker said decisions made during the evacuation likely exacerbated the situation for the frail patients.

Abe and the families of three other patients at Futaba Hospital who died in the evacuation process filed a lawsuit at the Tokyo District Court on June 10, seeking a total of about 130 million yen ($1.3 million) in compensation from Tokyo Electric Power Co., the operator of the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.

The patients’ ages ranged from 62 to 98 when they died.

“This is not an issue about money,” Abe, 71, said. “I want the court to clarify the reasons our father had to die and for TEPCO to apologize.”

Abe to respect NRA judgement for reactor restarts

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says the government will follow what the Nuclear Regulation Authority says in regards to approving restarts of nuclear reactors.

Some Japanese power companies are set to apply for the restart of their idled reactors as the country's regulator is expected on Wednesday to implement a strict set of rules to address severe accidents.

Abe said safety will be the top priority. He said that the government will let the authority decide.

TEPCO to increase groundwater testing

The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant says it will increase checks for strontium and tritium in groundwater near the damaged reactors.

Tokyo Electric Power Company workers detected the radioactive materials in groundwater taken from an observation well on the sea side of the No.2 reactor building. Company officials say they found no major changes in radiation levels in nearby seawater.

But they plan to set up more monitoring posts and observation wells. And they will reinforce nearby embankments to prevent contaminated groundwater reaching the sea.

New nuclear plant safety guidelines decided

Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority has officially decided on a set of new and stricter safety guidelines for running nuclear power plants.

The regulators on Wednesday unanimously approved the final draft of the guidelines. The work to revise them started last October.

Plant operators will be obliged to take concrete steps to deal with serious accidents. Until now, such action was voluntary.

Power companies will also be required to draw up emergency scenarios for bigger earthquakes and tsunami.

Thanks to the wonders of the real-time social media age, celebrity watchers the world over have been able to enjoy every second of Kim Kardashian’s pregnancy in excruciating detail. All this flying didn’t even register as a blip with her clueless doctor as we now know, from yesterday’s episode of “Keeping up with the Kardashians: Season 8“. Instead, he just stroked her ego and managed his TV presence, while he should have been concerned with the health of her child in light of a severe stomach infection which occurred during a transatlantic flight, one of many Kim made during her much-publicized pregnancy.

The latest word on the Kardashian/West baby is that it was delivered 5 weeks prematurely and severely underweight, following the discovery of another massive infection with Kim and was placed in neonatal intensive care.

Despite hundreds of tweets and updates from the family since the birth, the only information being shared is that “It’s a girl” and “It’s a miracle”. Even Larry Hackett, Managing Editor of People Magazine exclaimed somewhat disappointedly during Good Morning America, “It’s been strangely quiet on Planet K”.

Premature birth is nothing new, especially since the meltdowns of 3 nuclear reactors in Japan, in March of 2011. Three nuclear meltdowns that is, which have never been contained. In fact, a peer-reviewed scientific study showed that miscarriages and premature births skyrocketed in the months after 3/11. So did maternal deaths, where both the mother and baby die unexpectedly.

Mainstream media, eager to push the Angelina Jolie elective mastectomy and Kardashian’s weight gain, has neglected this study as well as a more recent one, showing infants on the west coast of North America have suffered negative health effects since the Fukushima meltdowns as well. Considering the companies that own the mainstream media also make nuclear reactors, that really comes as no surprise.

But what is a surprise is a huge radioactive fallout cloud, called a “plume” has circled the earth every 40 days since the beginning of the accident. This was reported from yet another peer-reviewed scientific study, this time out of Japan. And this has been going on 2 years.

This new plume is in addition to leftovers from atmospheric testing, depleted uranium (DU) that we have used in Iraq and Afghanistan that has made its way back into our weather systems, and the continuous radioactive emissions that come out of the normal operations of 400+ nuke plants in the northern hemisphere.

But the Fukushima plume has been a game changer, except no one really told us that the game had changed. Unless, of course, you have turned off the reality shows to pay attention and come out of the virtually extinct instinct for one’s own sense of self-preservation.

- ignoring their own scientists who said the tsunami walls were too low

- lying to their own people about the meltdowns

- with holding the SPEEDI system to warn civilians of the plume direction and evacuation routes

- continuing to lie about the contamination... as illustrated by the recent attempt to dump radioactive water

A senior North Korean official says his country is prepared to resume the six-party talks or any kind of dialogue to peacefully resolve its nuclear issue.

Robot carries out survey inside Fukushima reactor

A remote-controlled robot with a 7-meter-long arm has carried out a survey inside a reactor building at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

The newly developed robot is equipped with a camera and dosimeter on the tip of its arm. Its human operators worked from the building serving as the headquarters for the decommissioning work at the plant.

Tokyo Electric Power Company used the robot on Tuesday to investigate 6 locations near an interior ceiling of the Number 2 reactor.
