Atlanta Snowmageddon 2014: Part Deux!!!! | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 53471128 United States 02/11/2014 05:27 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Live in MN. Never have used chains on my tires. We also frequently get the whole ice under snow thing here. We have to deal with icy roads in the cities even when it doesn't snow because it is cold enough to freeze exhaust and cause black ice. One of my cars has almost bald tires and I can still get through the snow and ice. Remember ice melts with salt. Unless your temps are below zero which I doubt they are. It is really effective. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 4943077 Bully for you! However, the reality of physics will tell you that multiple vehicles in motion on ice will (and in fact does) very highly increase the probability of said vehicles colliding with both each other and various surrounding objects. Of course the presence of ice will increase the chances of people colliding due to loss of traction caused by the ice. Thank you for stating the obvious. What is not so obvious is that if you know how to dive on the ice and leave proper distance between you and the vehicles in front of you you can avoid the vast majority of collisions. If you drive the same way on ice that you would in normal conditions then you will for sure end up with a crippling amount of traffic issues. The salient point of my original argument stands. Compare the population of the city you commute to against the population of Atlanta, GA. The sheer volume of personal vehicles is enormous, and Atlanta isn't even the most populated city in the US. Ever driven rush hour in Atlanta? Trust me: Atlanta is a risky drive on a summer day. Now add ice. I'm sure *you* do fine driving on ice. But there are simply other factors to weigh in when you're talking about a highly populated city that normally doesn't see any inclement weather besides rainfall. It's not as simple as "southerners can't drive in the snow," when the primary factor is underlying ice. BTW, I'm not from Atlanta, I'm just a guy that is able to apply common sense and has driven automobiles in various weather conditions, in various places around the nation. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 30619939 United States 02/11/2014 05:29 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Anyone can drive in snow. Vehicles can not drive on ice. That is what we're talking about. Trust me, I'm from MD. As long as the road is straight and flag, you can drive on ice. There are no flat, straight roads of any distance in north Georgia. Heck, most of the driveways are 45 degree angles, with three feet before the garage. Or a 45 degree hill with a 90 degree turn at the bottom with no shoulder and a twenty foot drop off. Bad news. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 54224358 United States 02/11/2014 05:30 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Ha Ha! Yeah whatever. You just learn how to drive in this stuff when you live up here. I remember taking drivers ed in the winter and having to take my test in snowy conditions. As with most things in life there is really no good substitute for experience. I live in a rural location and have to leave my house early to commute to the city, often before the plows can get the roads cleared if it snowed overnight. A bit of exaggeration, I bet you walked 10 miles to school up hill both ways starting when you were 6 years old too. Almost bald tires on ice? That is just a freakin joke. Depending on the vehicle, an experienced driver can take almost bald through snow or slush, as long as there is no serious incline. Thats it. Rock salt loses ALL effectiveness at 15 degrees F. Fact. If calcium chloride is added, it lowers the freezing point of water even more, but very few if any cities can afford CaCl. Yep you got me.. It is super human to drive in snowy and icy conditions, must not be possible cause some people with less experience say they cannot. The reason most people cannot do the sort of things that Olympic athletes do is similar and has a lot to do with the fact that most have not been practicing and honing their skills since an early age. The saying practice makes perfect exists for a reason. There is nothing wrong with someone admitting that they have a harder time doing something because they have a lack of experience. People in the south in general have less experience driving in these conditions and are therefore less equip to deal with it regardless of salt or un-salted roads. There are plenty of things that other people can do better than me because they are more experienced. LOL, just stick with what I wrote. Nobody with "almost bald tires" drives on ice and gets away with it. It is not an olympic sport, and if it was, they would use tires with tread left. And as far as snow and slush, yeah its POSSIBLE to get up a "serious incline" if you are already in motion and at a good clip, Which means you are in the wrong place at the wrong time because it is dangerous to try and stop in such conditions, smart people aren't in a car at that point, especially if the tires are "almost bald". You Minnesotans exaggerate as you breath, I lived there for a while and that was my experience. It is quaint, to an extent. But y'all have so many good qualities it makes up for it. |

Just make sure you have the wine and beerstocked up LOL Actually, my brother was in Atlanta for a previous ice storm a few years back, and he was stuck there for a week before he could leave. It's not just a day or two, apparently, for this stuff to get out of the area - especially if the temps stay below freezing. |
