Atlanta Snowmageddon 2014: Part Deux!!!!

The salient point of my original argument stands.

Compare the population of the city you commute to against the population of Atlanta, GA. The sheer volume of personal vehicles is enormous, and Atlanta isn't even the most populated city in the US. Ever driven rush hour in Atlanta?

Trust me: Atlanta is a risky drive on a summer day. Now add ice.

I'm sure *you* do fine driving on ice. But there are simply other factors to weigh in when you're talking about a highly populated city that normally doesn't see any inclement weather besides rainfall. It's not as simple as "southerners can't drive in the snow," when the primary factor is underlying ice.

BTW, I'm not from Atlanta, I'm just a guy that is able to apply common sense and has driven automobiles in various weather conditions, in various places around the nation.

Anyone can drive in snow. Vehicles can not drive on ice. That is what we're talking about. Trust me, I'm from MD. As long as the road is straight and flag, you can drive on ice. There are no flat, straight roads of any distance in north Georgia. Heck, most of the driveways are 45 degree angles, with three feet before the garage. Or a 45 degree hill with a 90 degree turn at the bottom with no shoulder and a twenty foot drop off. Bad news.

LOL, just stick with what I wrote. Nobody with "almost bald tires" drives on ice and gets away with it. It is not an olympic sport, and if it was, they would use tires with tread left.

And as far as snow and slush, yeah its POSSIBLE to get up a "serious incline" if you are already in motion and at a good clip, Which means you are in the wrong place at the wrong time because it is dangerous to try and stop in such conditions, smart people aren't in a car at that point, especially if the tires are "almost bald".

You Minnesotans exaggerate as you breath, I lived there for a while and that was my experience. It is quaint, to an extent. But y'all have so many good qualities it makes up for it.

If the roads have not been PRE SALTED AND are actually covered in ice, I don't care how flat they are, it is just plain stupid to drive on them without chains or studded tires meant for ice.

And completely ignore the fairy tale tellers from the hinterlands who talk of getting up hills of ice in "almost bald" tires.

I would probably suggest taking 285 and following it until it ends.

Actually, my brother was in Atlanta for a previous ice storm a few years back, and he was stuck there for a week before he could leave. It's not just a day or two, apparently, for this stuff to get out of the area - especially if the temps stay below freezing.

I flew down here from Houston monday and will be here till friday.
There was a little hail today, Gerbil turd sized hail. it all melted away. Tonight its suppost to Snice, my word for the news's "OMG ICE AND SNOW HOLY SHIT THIS IS A SERIOUSLY DANGERIOUS MIX!" Its snice, The News is completely blowing this out of proportion, They are trying to compensate for they're fuck up last month of not warning anyone about the snow/ice, or Snice. I WILL LINK PICS when it starts tonight. I have Jerky, Rahman, Beer, Internet, Enemy Within "Incase I lose internet", and my trusty kickass flip flops.

Up north when they get 4 feet of snow, Mom yells at the kids to get up early and shovel that shit before going to school. lmao the hype here is overwhelming. I went to target to get a new mousepad and Guess what???

You need to delay this.Even if you leave now you will still be caught up in it.A lot of roads will be closed once it gets closer.You do not want to be going through Ga until at least late Thursday or Friday and it will still be messy.You will be staying in a motel until things improve if you are lucky.

Most all flights have already been canceled even in areas where there is no bad weather due to connections with these airlines.South Georgia has cancelled flights at the little airports because connecting flights are cancelled.

I don't think most people realize how hilly the Atlanta metro area and North Georgia in general are. Some parts of it are as hilly as San Francisco.

They have expanded it to a much wider area now.I think from Macon north..That map is probably for the one thats already went through.The one coming later is the BIG problem.

I have no clue what news you are watching but the only thing I have heard of is 1/2" of ice tonight...lived here all my life and there's never been 4' of snow predicted nor occurred.

The Governor just said to get where ever you are going and be there by 10 pm and midnight at the latest and plan on staying maybe even up to a week because the ice will bring everything to a standstill,power will be out possibly for days,and now they say wind gusts are coming too.Saying to stay off the roads so they can treat them as soon as they can and prepare and be patient.

This is BS man. I was gonna move to Chattanooga but instead I'll move to Jacksonville, FL.

I didn't prepare and when I went to the store today everything was empty HELP!

Me and the girl were coming back from a Dr appointment around noon 2 weeks ago and noticed this little Xterra with pink bows and pink stickers all over the back tailgating and driving way too fast on my road...after the truck she was tailgating broke off, she punched it and was gone...mind you this was Thursday after *most* of it was gone, but still plenty of fun in the shady curves...we commented on how she was maybe a bit hasty...then came around the next corner and saw that thing flipped on the hill off the curve...17 year old girl lol.

But I agree, growing up around here it was always fun seeing the fellers in their 4x4s going out to play in the snow and how many of them ran off the hillsides. Never ceases to amaze me. Yeah, my bronco will go anywhere, but that's not the point...it can't stop anywhere, and that's a lessen to be learned.

LOL...yeah, I remember a time when all the out of state plates were SC, NC, and maybe a random FL. Since the early 90s they are all MI, OH, and CA. Hrrrmmmm...I thought all those folks were going to teach us how to drive in this stuff. Oh well, I guess they were too busy letting their kids spend the night on a school bus in the ditch a couple of weeks ago.

If you ever visit ATL and actually meet a southerner, you should make a thread here about it, because I see very few of them these days.
