Sulphur dioxide off gassing causes a blue haze
[link to m.flickr.com (secure)]
 Quoting: Childoflight 35923180

Ummm, no :-)

Sulphur dioxide can often react to form Sulphur Oxides (SOx) which will result in a yellow to brownish haze (that is more well know as smog.) This is exactly what happens at the volcano.

Haze from water vapor produce a blueish to grey haze. Non condensed water vapor will blue tint the air.

I'm not at all sure what is happening, but if that cloud is of the same composition as the one from our now familiar vent, then a lot of people are in very serious trouble.

The pyrocumulonimbus cloud seen here is emanating from the direction of BÁRDARBUNGA .

i agree 100%

there is the plume and then there seems to be another rising up behind it, we all watched earlier the black smoke that did come from the glacier so whether or not its a continuation of that we wont know till either the smoke clears or they do another flyover, nap time for me, too much glaring at a computer screen hfyawn

I compared the coordinates from the NASA photo to the image plot on 3dBulge and the point of origin for the cloud seems to be directly south of Askja but actually closer to us than the original fissure.

Scratch that, not closer, pretty much same area as original.

Really does appear something major could be happening ,but the fact that we have heard nothing from other sources so far makes me doubt it.
 Quoting: Rentaigen

it's very strange!

What's really strange is a quick google news search for "Iceland" just now gives only soccer result of Iceland vs Turkey. :P

The 2600 µg/m3 levels of SO2 measured on Iceland were certanly high enough to cause harm. The level b4 danger to ppl occur in Finland is set at 350 µg/m3. A level of 187 microgrammes/m3 was enough to create a note in the governmentally run weather service;

Sammaltunturin rikkidioksidipitoisuus nousi voimakaasti sunnuntaina noin klo 18 tienoilla ja pitoisuus oli korkeimmillaan yöllä klo 03 aikaan. Pitoisuudeksi mitattiin enimmillään 187 mikrogrammaa kuutiossa. Terveyden suojelemiseksi annettu raja-arvo on 350 µg/m3 eli raja-arvojen alapuolelle jäätiin vielä selvästi.

he probability of an eruption in Bárðarbunga is now thought to be increased due to a steady lowering of the surface above the volcano’s crater. This greatly worries scientists and Civil Protection Department representatives, ruv.is reports.

Toxic gases make it very difficult to operate at the eruption site and access is very limited, even to scientists, who are required to wear gas masks when they work in the area. The gases can be life-threatening.

An eruption in Bárðarbunga, which lies underneath Vatnajökull glacier, could potentially be massive, emitting high quantities of ash into the air, according to geophysicist Magnús Tumi Guðmundsson. The glacial melt water would ultimately break out as a great flood in one of the glacial rivers. This is the scenario which the Civil Protection Department is preparing for.
