Does Trump Hate Science? | |

Quoting: BlueRidge Doom What's with all the cuts to education programs, like the one NASA offers. I can understand the EPA, but why the National Institutes of Health? The reason for this seems if there’s no science to point out potential problems, there won’t be any more regulations. I am sure there are real reasons, but some of it seems overkill, especially when wanting to just take the money from Sciences, and move it to Military. That's not saving tax dollars, its just taking apples from one basket and moving them to another. I have a friend who is working on his Doctorate in neuroscience, and when we talk, its hard to defend what Trump is doing to the science community. Which bugs me, because everything else the Left says about him is so easily debunked. Please enlighten me, GLP! [link to www.nature.com] Just gave away 19 BILLION to nasa, so I dunno. I thought we had a debt of 20 TRILLION. And yet he takes away meals on wheels. Crazy. |

Get out your checkbook. I already do, it's called paying taxes. Personally, the only things I want funding for is cleaning the oceans and our land from plastic trash, and chemical pollutants. Improve coal scrubber technology for more energy independence. Stop GMO and Monsanto funding, and make sure my food and water isn't giving me cancer 10 or 15 years down the road. The meals on wheels isn't as big a deal as it seems because it will effect only around 3% of their budget and really should be privately funded just like the "arts". |

While the stated goals of some of these government programs is seemingly altruistic, there comes a point where it is not worth the money. For example, if you appropriate 20 billion for some project, but 17 billion is spent on top heavy administration, the ends do not justify the expense. That is the reality of most government programs. |

Strongly agreed.Astro had a great post about his work and school and the fact there were only one other American with doctorates there and most others were from abroad, highlighting what you are saying. I too think we need to take a serious look at the education system, and quickly. It's in the plan I guess for the latter generations to be dullards and they probably hope we fall way behind..like we will if it doesn't change. |
Natural Beauty User ID: 71193524 United States 03/22/2017 02:59 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Here it is: While I do support going forward to a manned Mars mission, I am concerned about the proposed budget cuts to NASA's STEM scholarships and education. I'm all for getting the federal government out of education, but there is a desperate need to encourage and train the next generation of US-born scientists and engineers. ITAR restricts foreign nationals from working even on unclassified projects involving defense, including rocketry, without a license to do so. For the US to maintain its lead in spaceflight we need to make sure we're properly educating our own citizens in science and engineering. As a scientist in the US myself, the vast majority of the people I work with are foreign nationals. The US just doesn't produce quality scientists in my field as often as it should. There's currently only one other US-born PhD scientist at my institute. The rest all immigrated here (legally). The educational system needs a massive overhaul, to get away from politically correct teaching, social justice, and other crap, and get back to teaching the fundamentals of science and math without trying to avoid "hurting a child's feelings" if they fail to perform and without filling it with "social justice" crap either. NASA is a large part of the reason I had the desire to go into science from childhood, so it's about time that NASA got back to the business of inspiring the next generation of scientists. My goal w this thread was to actually get some insight on what Trump intends to do regarding science, since a friend of mine is asking me, and I am left blank.
