What if we gave the spark of imagination to mice/rats and they developed it? Since a rat/mouse's life is a lot shorter than ours, if we were try to have conversations with it, wouldn't we appear slow/ docile/ stupid to them? I mean the second or two we think of words to say is like a day in their lifetime let alone have a conversation with them...wouldn't that be like a month of their life?! :O See where I'm going with this? EDIT: And the fact that we divide our days around a solar day...do they sleep just once a day too or two or three times to make it more "normal" day/life cycle for them? Ray Kurzweil used a similar argument in the age of spiritual machines, a different take on how we feel about emerging AI. while folk are fixated on the "terminator" style fears surrounding AI, RK suggested that the sheer speed of computation would mean that to any AI, millions of "years" would go by in a flash... he went on to suggest that such an AI would appear enlightened to us slow meat thinkers, as it had the "time" to work out all the "big questions" instead of responding to its "wake-up" with the kind of territorial tantrum that Skynet threw.. interesting idea [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)] |
