And I suppose 1.5 billion Indians and 1.5 billion Chinese has no impact whatsoever...

These environmentalist have crossed the line now. They want everyone to lead sad joyless lives like their own.

According to a study out Monday on global climate change, your dog (or your cat) is probably killing the environment, and if you want to stem the tide of global warming, it's time to say "good-bye" to Fido and Fluffy.

The study, which appears in the online journal PLOS, claims the human compulsion to seek out animal companionship is one of the primary factors affecting our climate, particularly in the United States where there are 163 million companion animals — roughly one pet for every two Americans — the highest number of any country in the world.

Researchers at the University of Sydney in Australia claim that those 163 million pets have a detrimental impact on the environment, from the food they consume to the waste they produce.

"In the US, there are more than 163 million dogs and cats that consume, as a significant portion of their diet, animal products and therefore potentially constitute a considerable dietary footprint," the study's abstract proclaims. "Here, the energy and animal-derived product consumption of these pets in the US is evaluated for the first time, as are the environmental impacts from the animal products fed to them, including feces production."

The problem isn't just the United States, though. The popularity of companion animals has grown worldwide.

Any time someone comes out with a statement - don’t even waste your time , just go straight to the methodology on HOW they arrived at the statement.

Of course after reading it, as with most - this is flawed.

First they base one average on information from the APPA. There was/is no oversight on if the stats they put out are check - flawed.

Another flaw is that the used premium pet foods for the study because it was most widely available- flawed.

The biggest flaw, of course it is because these people have never had to live and work in the real world. The food, corn meal, by-prodecits, ash, etc. are all leftover and food not fit for human consumption. After processing food for us, there is a tremendous amount of leftover product which is then sold to pet food producers.

So in having pets - we actually recycle food waste. And yes legally leftover foods from human processing can and is be sold to premimum food processors.

Cats are actually really bad for the environment.

They kill birds and other creatures for fun and are causing a mass extinction.

There is no way to be a responsible cat owner at this point in human history.
