Quoting: Fret Wiz The basic rule is so simple & proven nearly every time - 'alternatives' to natural products are nasty shit and BAD FOR YOU. I bought a book called "60 Ways to Lower Your Blood Sugar: Simple Steps to Reduce the Carbs, Shed the Weight, and Feel Great Now!", by Dennis Pollock last month. I've read here and there in it and the author is a huge proponent of artificial sweeteners. He devotes an entire chapter, Chapter 15 starting on page 53, to artificial sweeteners. He lauds how great they are for pre-diabetics and diabetics both... and he devotes more than a few sentences to how the FDA at least has many years worth of frequent studies and other scientific papers on how Aspartame and the other artificial sweeteners are healthy and good for you. As I've read though Dennis Pollock's book the more I realize that you really have to be making a fair amount of money to afford the healthy lifestyle he describes all pre-diabetics and diabetics are required to wholly embrace if they want to live a less painful existence. I find it incredibly tragic that this book is almost illegal, if not the author can actually be sued into oblivion, for being so pro-artificial sweetener. I don't doubt there are alot of diabetics out there who took this advice to heart over the years and now they're more crippled than diabetes could ever make them on it's own. So these days if you're a poor diabetic or pre-diabetic you have to make a choice. Either you make the necessary lifestyle changes to live out your already incredibly shortened lifespan or die a disparaging death alot sooner. The portion control scheme doesn't seem to be working too well since dang near everything these days in America has phenomenal amounts of sugar, carbs, and dang near everything else in them for processed foods. Food is a weapon nowadays and that really fricken sucks. Conspiracy Theorist is nothing more than a derogatory title used to dismiss a critical thinker. True, Mental Case, but good luck doing portion control these days when the portions themselves shrink faster and faster as the calories, carbs, and sugars at least explode in more and more processed foods. For example, Truvia has stevia, but also has Erythritol. That could be what caused them problems. "3. Gastrointestinal Problems Sugar alcohols like erythritol are well-known to cause digestive issues. Some of the most common erythritol side effects are undesirable gastrointestinal side effects, which are especially common in children. (7) Unfortunately, the gastrointestinal issues don’t necessarily stop at some rumbling in your stomach. Diarrhea is a well-known common erythritol side effect. Especially when consumed in excess, unabsorbed erythritol can attract water from the intestinal wall and cause diarrhea. The likelihood of diarrhea appears to be even more likely when erythritol is consumed along with fructose. (8) Diarrhea might sound harmless, but it can lead to dehydration, electrolyte imbalances and malnutrition. Many people report upset stomach and diarrhea after consuming erythritol in food or beverages. If consumption is high (50 grams or more per day) then digestive upset, including gas, cramping, bloating, stomachache and diarrhea, becomes even more likely. One study specifically showed that the intake of 50 grams of erythritol caused stomach rumbling and nausea..." Published in AJTCAM (African Journal of Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicines), the study is entitled, “IMPACT OF ASPARTAME CONSUMPTION ON NEUROTRANSMITTERS IN RAT BRAIN.” (Source) Quoting: MyPillow The study fed rats aspartame for durations of 10 – 40 days, then decapitated the rats and analyzed their brains. From the abstract, “Blood and brain tissue were collected for biochemical analysis. Biochemical analysis of brain tissue includes neurotransmitters (Acetylcholine, epinephrine, norepinephrine, ?-aminobutyric acid and serotonin). Serum for determination of lipid peroxidation (MDA), reduced glutathione and superoxide dismutase (SOD).” [link to www.naturalnews.com (secure)] Yup and guess why the FDA approved it? “Aspartame triggered the first criminal investigation of a manufacturer put into place by the FDA in 1977. In 1980 the FDA banned aspartame from use after having 3 independent scientist study the artificial sweetener. In January of 1981 Donald Rumsfeld, CEO of Searle, stated in a sales meeting that he was going to “call in his markers” and make a push to get aspartame approved. That month Ronald Reagan was sworn in as President of the United States. His transition team included Rumsfeld who hand picked Dr. Arthur Hull Hayes Jr. to be the new FDA Commissioner. Within a couple of months, Hayes appointed a 5-person Scientific Commission to review the claims on aspartame. In a 3 – 2 decision, the panel upheld the original ban, stating that the artificial sweetener was unsafe.Despite the panel’s decision, Hayes later installed a sixth member on the commission who voted in favor of the making aspartame legal. The vote was now deadlocked. So what happened? Hayes personally broke the tie in aspartame’s favor. (Keep in mind that Dr. Hayes, a pharmacologist had no previous experience with food additives before becomes in the FDA Director.) On July 18, 1981 Hayes officially approved the use of aspartame as an artificial sweetener in dry goods. (How’s this for a kicker: In 1983 Hayes later left his post at the FDA amid accusations that he was accepting corporate gifts for political favors. BUT, just before leaving office in scandal, Hayes approved the use of aspartame in beverages.) The icing on the cake: In 1985 Searle was absorbed by Monsanto. Donald Rumsfeld reportedly received a $12 million bonus. And the sad tale of fake food and experimentation on the human race continued onward. This is another one of those cases where you can find a study to “prove” either side: Aspartame is safe. Aspartame is dangerous. However, looking over the history books, I am reminded why I generally don’t trust studies in the first place: The people making the claims can be bought.“ [link to www.thankyourbody.com (secure)] . Yep. Poisoning people for fun and profit. Rumsfeld is one of the evil elite. Thanks for posting this! It's an important piece in this aspertame issue.
