No artillery that I am aware of can reach that far. Rockets, yes. China has lots of those, but that is a relatively expensive way to bombard an entire country. One US Navy officer described an amphibious landing attempt by China as "the million man swim". Taiwan's navy can do a huge amount of damage. Japan could do far more. If China attempts and fails, the leaders lose "the mandate of heaven" to rule China. In addition, Taiwan could set mines in the shipping lanes and cut China off from imports and exports. The USA and others could embargo all Chinese imports as well. What would Viet Nam, India, et al, do? They know they are next on the menu if Taiwan falls. How badly do the Chinese want Taiwan? |

Read up on what the experts have to say. Things changed between the first and the second Rand studies mentioned in this article and another 9 years have passed since. I haven't followed it closely but Rand has probably updated since the 2009 study. My personal opinion is that Taiwan is far too beautiful a cultural Vacation site for China to go about taking it over overtly. They also dont have the capability to manufacture a jet engine. However, they have a LOT of aircraft and a lot of MANpower. They will also use Eastern suicide tactics just like Muslim suicide-bombers, LTTE terrorists and Japanese Kamikaze.
