Local politicians won't listen to anything I have to say about the state of our local area. We're having our culture and way of life destroyed by mass immigration and foreign cultures. The roads / traffic everywhere I go is unbearable. House prices are ridiculous. Saving rates are in the gutter. They tax the living shit out of me on my salary, other property I own, fuel costs, council tax, TV licence and more. Gay/Transgender agenda is constantly being promoted (even police cars & vans have been decorated in rainbow colors!). Policemen walking around with rainbow painted nails. Businesses everywhere flying the rainbow flags. I wake up this morning to the news the EU have decided all new vehicles will be built with speed limiting devices controlling how fast you can drive and motion trackers based on which road you're on. I could go on and on... Quoting: GeordieLegend I'm tired of it all, and not having a voice. Whenever a concern is raised, it's brushed to one side and ignored, and you're slapped with a label to silence you. My company have offered me a position in our Texas office, close to Houston. I've visited 8 times, and from what I've seen, it's very different to the UK in many ways... Has anyone done a similar move? What are the pro's / cons for a Brit moving to the US..? I've lived just outside of Houston for a couple decades now. No regrets! The women are prettier and the men are nicer. The food is good, too! Adversity is inevitable, misery is optional. Anonymous Coward User ID: 74931748 United States 03/27/2019 08:50 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The big cities in Texas have become extremely transient. There are probably several big British groups that meet for a variety of reasons, especially premier league fans. I think you will have very little problem finding like-minded people to a varying degree. The others replying to your OP are right in the sense that INNER-CITY Houston is liberal with probably the biggest low-income Black communities in Texas peppered throughout the city. Additionally, younger people 1-5 years out of college tend to gravitate to city residence because of the social aspects of nightlife, etc. These demographics tend to be liberal and that's why you see ALL the big city propers in Texas vote blue (see map link below). The outer suburbs become more conservative because people's priorities change to family, etc., and the suburbs offer cheaper housing costs and better public schools. As far as the city of Houston itself, it's the biggest singular city in Texas with the WORST traffic, and Houston may be the most polarizing of the 4 big metro areas in Texas. Many people HATE Houston, and many people really like it. People seem to be a little more genuine than Dallas, have less personality than Austin, and less Mexican than San Antonio. You are basically on the Gulf Coast, but that's a whole different topic. The weather from May through September, being HUMID as hell and low to mid 90's, is fairly miserable. You are likely to get a serious Hurricane scare once every year. You could move to a WAY worse city in the States, and the better cities is WAY WAY HIGHER, or you'll get worse weather. Anywhere you move in the States will require some kind of compromise like job opportunity, weather, cost of living, scenic beauty, etc. Good luck! [link to www.270towin.com (secure)] |

I'm from Freestone county, TX, away from all of the cities. Crime of any kind is a rarity. I can sit on my porch and shoot targets with my .22 all afternoon and nobody cares. I still go to Dallas or Houston or Austin if I want to party, I have never had any problems. It's only like Mexico, well, near Mexico, up to San Antonio and the Valley. They are right about Liberty, though. It's more like Louisiana than Texas. Good luck |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 77127665 United States 03/27/2019 09:08 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | If you can get over here to US, you will grow to love it and the feeling of freedom. Your children will have more opportunity. That being said, however, there are always painful adjustments with any large life change. It is stressful to pick up an entire family and move to a different country with a different culture. There is a learning curve involved, and emotional ties which will affect your entire family unit. If your employer will agree to begin green card proceedings for you, and pay all associated expenses, and you feel confident that your job with them is secure, I would say go for it. Even if you end up not loving the area, once you get your green card you can move wherever you want in the US and be employed by anyone. In the interim, you could travel to different part of the country to see what you prefer. It's a huge country with varied climate and scenery and political inclinations. East coast is more densely populated and rigid, and the western states are more open and free. I wouldn't do it without the green card assistance, which is a three year (approximately) process while you work only for that employer sponsoring you. This is a great opportunity. Anticipation and fear are similar emotions, don't misinterpret what you are feeling. Many people have walked a thousand miles with no money and no job offer in order to cross illegally in the US. You get to fly in on a jet and be welcomed with a job and an furnished apartment and a paycheck. Lucky guy! |

I would say, MOVE. We just moved back to Texas, an area north of Houston almost a year ago, and have zero regrets. Texas, as a whole is a Conservative state. There are pockets of liberalism in the urban areas, but that is everywhere. There is a large Hispanic population, but they are mostly Mexican; Mexicans have lived alongside Anglos in Texas since the early 1800s. They fought together for independence from Mexico. Texas has a very different culture. People look at each other and see fellow Texans first, other things latter. Do not listen to the naysayers. They either are NOT from here, or are libturds that moved here who should have stayed in the libbieland shitholes of their own creation. ETA: Houston is not far from Galveston Island if you enjoy sun, sand and beaches. About 5 hours from New Orleans if you want to do Mardi Gras, although Galveston also has a nice Mardi Gras celebration. About 5 hours from Dallas, if you want to do the Big D. About 5 hours from San Antonio with the Alamo, and the gorgeous, historic Riverwalk. Worst case, you are unhappy and move back to UK. They will not really consider you "Texan" till you have been here a few years, and are making strides at assimilating (don't eat your steak well done). I love the Hill Country but I highly recommend the Piney Woods as well. Quoting: Rabbit In The Hat Welcome to Texas! **Edited to add... My neighbors are Brits who moved here 30+ years ago. They love Texas & go back to GB every couple of years to visit. They vow to never return for the very reasons you want to leave. That said, they are thinking about moving because the Texas heat is really bothering them now that they are getting older (65+). They are looking for a more moderate climate. I also have former UK neighbors. He is a professor from England, she is a real estate agent from Scotland.
