Taking away free food, roof, power, clothes, transportation and heat would restore the motivation and incentive to work. People would be thankful for a job and work hard to keep it.

Why not just house the workers in dormitories at the factory and feed the at the factory store, hell take it out of their pay. Ungrateful shits would be homeless and starving otherwise!

Isn't that kind of how it was 150 or so years ago?

Just saw the thread about the guy who FIRED all WHITE FEMALE Administrators in his school district - "to better represent the district and convey the message...." blah, blah.

All these nutty things seem like we're going BACKWARDS rather than forward in society. Isn't hiring and firing based on skin color something we dealt with and eliminated 60 something years ago?!?!

Maybe they're just tired of corporate slavery.

hmm

You think it would be any better under any of the other ISM's (Socialism, Communism, Fascism). Even if the employees formed a Co-Op, people still have to put up truck; set the Planograms; put up the merchandise; and deal with the unruly customers...

It seems like so many jobs/businesses are categorized by ethnicity-race. South of the border people = construction- basically all forms of it. Also, they are starting to permeate plumbing and even mechanics. Tech = a lot of Indians and other Asians. Convenience stores = run by Hindus or Muslims. Nail techs = Asians. Just so much of it you mention = thoughts of that- like it's not even your "category" to consider. They hire/mentor their own.

Outsourcing needs to be curtailed by law and monopolies broken up. Immigration need to stop. Then maybe wages and benefits through jobs would naturally go up and small business would be able to flourish.

One of the best things about being retired is, now I don't have to find employees that will actually work. The real workers are retiring, like me. What's left are the younger people that do just enough to get by, on a good day. Most applicants were not willing to get out of bed to come to work, or they couldn't pass a piss test. It was not unusual to call three or four people before finding on that could start to work. Then you have a 50% chance that one will actually try to do the job.

Thank God I an retired!
 Quoting: Epic Beard Guy

I agree, and most of the time you had to redo their work yourself anyways.
Who is going to grow and harvest these lazy asses food, do the building, maintain and repair work? The real slavery will be when they have to beg foreign work forces to feed and take care of them.

Re: People today are afraid of work
Whether it's hard work, boring work or just plain old simple work, the people today are ready to complain at the drop of a hat about anything.

I wonder how this country would have turned out if during the industrial revolution they complained the same way. I wonder how this country would have grown and become a superpower if these people had to live back then.

Assembly lines where you did nothing but the same thing day in and day out. You got hired but you weren't the manager within a month. Street sweeping, lamp lighting, dirty jobs cleaning up horse shit all day.

They have the old saying, work hard, play hard. Except today these kids just want to play hard without any of the work. They want to get a job making $50,000 a year from the start, have no real responsibilities, no desire to sweat and then they want to be in charge after a month.

They don't want to earn what they have they want it to be given. Guess what, real work is sometimes hard and painful.

I've done home maintenance, apartment maintenance and hotel maintenance. It is all hard work where you can get hurt. Try working on a car for a living. Do some plumbing or maybe some electrical work. Try building something out of wood. I once worked at a wine making factory. I did the same thing everyday all day. I got my 30 minute lunch and that was it. I didn't complain about how hard it was or how dangerous it was. I didn't complain about not getting paid enough or not having benefits. I was happy I had the job.

These kids today are afraid of hard work, dedication, sweating, blooding and everything else that goes into a hard job. They want to sit back and do as little as possible for as much as possible and if you tell them that's not how it works. They look at you as if you have done them wrong and the complain that you are holding them back, that the job is unsafe, boring, to hard, unfair and doesn't pay enough for the work they are doing.
 Quoting: Bananafighter

i'm all for lowering the bar on effort from slaves

i view this as progress people should get lazy fuck this slave labor bullshit

the sooner the old farts that love being slaves realize us crazy lazy young folk might be actually onto something being all lazy and shit on purpose
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22680266

Work slowdown's work when you have an asswipe for a boss. The best thing to do is to form Unions. Problem with Unions is that they are corrupt. They take your money and get very little done. Then there are the strikes, with no money coming in to feed your family. Finally, your wages go up and you price yourself to the extremes where the company goes under and everyone loses their job...

Vicious cycle. Best to start your own business and grab a piece of the pie. Then sell the pie for greater investments..

In order to get rid of free food, free shelter, free electric, free clothes and free heat you would have to destroy the entire Earth!!

Earth provides all these things, problem is you aren't working for these things, you are working for an agenda while someone who stole these things from you gives you these things in return to further their agenda. If you were really working for these things you would be getting them from the earth, not from a corporation. Freedom is dead.

You are slaves. Go take back your lakes and oceans, your wild game, your right to electric and use your wood furnaces. You can't, you are slaves.

If your organs are healthy you have high energy level thing then work feels satisfying.

If you get diabetes you are so tired work feels like agony.

Work just slowly kills you if the body does not regenerate what you used up at at least equilibrium.

That especially means hormones and Nuerotransmitters. Glycogen. Insulin. Leptin. Dopamine regeneration Is the ultimate factor. Serotonin etc.

All these ssris are trying to conserve their serotonin. You use all that shit up when you work. The speed at which the body regenerates determines energy level.

Once i got insomnia theres no regeneration you're basically dead without good sleep.

Well, my Grandfather used to make good money in the 1960s-1970s doing many forms of construction. My Dad tried it for a while in the 1980s and by the end of the decade, Mexicans had crashed the wages.

Its all about motive, incentive

There is no motive.

Its hard to get excited about 40 hrs a week and $15/hr.

There is no future in that, its just existence.

Who wants to work hard to just exist.

Isn't that the promise of technology? Less work more time?

Thoreau proved existence doesn't require much, so why work hard at it?

If you want people to work and care about their work give them something to care about, to invest their time in. Compensate them fairly and reward them for hard work.

Don't dangle carrots, duh!

---

Side note.

I worked delivering pizzas when younger. Only the drivers wanted the business to be busy. All the cooks, phone people etc wanted business slow, easy. Why? Because the driver's pay was directly affected by business volume, but the cooks pay was not.

So who do you think cared more about the business the cook or the driver?

So whose fault is that? Why didn't you get a better education to make yourself more viable? Oh that's right... you didn't want to work hard in school so you get what you deserve. Stop complaining and do something about it.

Yes, there were mill hills. Housing owned by the local mill, rented to workers. Also mill stores.

Before that there was outright slavery. Your owner housed and fed you. How nice of him.

Today there is non-living wages that require workers to bunk up, share the cost of living.

And greed is what makes it all possible.

I see this every day. Most of the young 'adults' I deal with simply don't want to work but realize if they don't, they won't be able to pay for their phone or fancy car... so they have a little incentive but that's it.

Betcha most can't change their own oil, or flat tire. Think they could fix a toilet? How about a simple appliance repair? They can't do any of these things.

would you give that same speech to the career politicians,
celeberties <- don't give a shit how it's spelled, silver spooned kids, and everyone else that fits the bill.
 Quoting: 43 73789284

Without hesitation. The fact that the term "career politician" exists is disgusting. These people used to be politicians and hold real jobs doing real work. Why? Because they couldn't make enough just being a politician to survive.
Celebrities are nothing more than the modern day court jesters. Run, jump and act stupid for our entertainment. Most (if not all) of them have never known a day of real work in their lives. Oh no you had to "train" for that role. I'm so sorry you had to go through the luxury of fine dinning and personal trainers in order to get paid $20 million to act like and idiot.
 Quoting: Bananafighter

Sounds like you are jealous. It is not as easy as it looks. Go try it. And people like entertainment or the industry wouldn’t be there.

And some people are just going to make money very easily. And some don’t give a damn about it and value their free time. And some are just going to struggle.

Just focus on yourself and not what others are doing. You sound like so many generations past where they ALL said the next generation was crap.

Stop being an old curmudgeon. Times change and people change thankfully.

And it’s ok to vent but don’t get stuck there. Hope you feel better soon.

Is there something wrong with the concept of paying good wages, treating people like equals and getting good work in return?

I've seen it happen, its possible. Or you can treat people like they are all beneath you, pay them low wages and deal with constant headaches of never having good workers.

All the “Hard Workers” in this thread are going through a lot of work to convince GLP that they’re harder and more humble workers than the other people are. Do you have something to prove? Do you feel that you have some kind of lesson to prove?

Why would you want to do something the more difficult way just so others know you can?

Abusive greedy bosses and companies get low skilled, lazy, hateful employees.

They attract each other.

Maybe they're just tired of corporate slavery.

hmm
 Quoting: Wrastlor

They weren't tired 100 years ago. Or maybe they were but they just didn't constantly complain about it.
 Quoting: Bananafighter

Oh they were tired. They would love to live now. Many didn’t make it past 50. That’s not a good life.

No, people are sick and fucking tired of being used. The whole system is made up of pigs at the top who use and abuse, large and small alike.

People know it and are sick of it, thats why no one wants to work. So fuck off!

LOL

They are not even ashamed of being lazy without practical skills. They defend and boast about no work ethics. They have no conscience and self respect when it comes to self reliance and productivity.
I am not happy if I am not actively productive each day.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77662044

This is true...

I work in retail and have to put up Truck 3 times a week. We have lazy people that are not ashamed to just stand around and let others put up truck. They think they are special. As a manager, I get right down and do all the dirty jobs to show by example that I'm not afraid to work. The ones that don't work, I crack out the whip and tell them to get to work and do their jobs. If not, there's the door...

Those men who worked their asses off in the corporate world would retire and then a few years later would have a heart attack and die. Actuary tables were built around that. Women in the work force started catching up to them.

Many became smart about that and started taking time for themselves and or the medical community caught up to keep them alive longer.

Many are now like screw it. We don’t live that long to work ourselves to death.
