I've watched a few videos on the A.T. They're available online if you know where to look.

I love hiking and the outdoors but there's no way I would do it alone. I admire those that do.

I learned that most people that hike the trail do so without a weapon. Apparently it boils down to weight... the trail is so daunting, after a few weeks hikers are discarding everything other than what they absolutely have to have to survive.

Did it in 2004.
I never had a single problem except for black bears around camp at night.
Kind of like all the other GLP brilliant warnings, nothing.

If I became a billionaire, I'd go live there and start massive employment projects like tourism etc. The area is too beautiful let it die out.

This shit cracks me up. My GF wanted to "hike it" on her 40th b-day.....and like i just posted, its 2000 fucking miles long. So when someone says they have, they are full of shit.

Talk about sport. Get some 11B together and head out. The Cops would magically find em and throw the book at them. No expense spared.

I'll bet a higher percentage of people who hike the Appalachian Trail LIVE than those who drive I-95 in NJ. Want to be scared witless? Drive that road anytime night or day.

In days of old, 70's early 80's, I remember when the West Virginia Turnpike ... all of 88 miles long ... would have a weekend death count of 10 to 25 EVERY WEEKEND, and on Holiday Weekends (4th July, Labor Day, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving etc.) that 88 miles would see 25 to 55 dead (I think I saw high 60's once). ("safer now that it has been "rebuilt", but still HATE it!)

Risks exist EVERYWHERE!! It is the nature of LIFE.

MANY MORE people die of Heart Attacks while hiking that trail every year than get killed (what is the average rate of killings? once every 3 years or so over it's 2100 miles)!!

Hike with a friend, or a couple, or hook up with some other hikers, and you just cut your hiking risks dramatically ... but mostly because of things like heart attacks, injuries where you just can't hike out (broken legs/ankles etc.) or allergic reactions to things like bee stings or snake bites.

I used to hike parts of the trail regularly ... but I ALWAYS had at least one hiking partner, the same philosophy when I would go on 2 week long canoe trips into the Canadian Wilderness. At least ONE other person with me.

Unfortunately the trail runs through some states that have changed their gun laws.

If it's anything like Oregon Trail, you could die from dysentery, or worse, everyone could die from cholera.

In the dry season, the Platte River would dry to a trickle and water would pool up and become stagnant. Stop flowing altogether. The Oregon trail ran along river beds containing toxic water. Until it crossed the Rockies.
