Why is quitting smoking harder than quitting drugs?
I’ve tried to quit smoking several times, the longest being about 36 hours where I broke after a family death. Since then, I’ve made it between 24-36 hrs at a time...

I’ve done my fair share of drugs when I was younger and was lucky enough to be able to put them down when they stopped making me feel good. Cigarettes are WAY harder.

Not to mention, I have a MMJ prescription, and if I quit smoking cigarettes, it would give a HUGE amount to spend on something that doesn’t taste like shit, smell like shit, and doesn’t keep my wife (who’s never been a smoker) on my back to quit.

Why do you think they only allow Alcohol and Tobacco ? - 2 Totally addictive drugs.

Cannabis was outlawed because it covered both of the above bases without being physically addictive.

Why is quitting smoking way easier than quitting alcohol. 2 months without a cigarette 20 seconds without a drink.

Re: Why is quitting smoking harder than quitting drugs?
Depending on how long you've smoked, it may take a while to disassociate your habits. For instance, you didn't wake up one day and immediately smoke a pack of 20 that day; it would have slowly built up from a couple per day to wherever you are at your peak.

When I quit it took me about 3 months before I had my first 'revelation'. I was sat in a bar and had a pint and it was the first moment I had done something without immediately reaching for a cigarette. That elated me.

I suggest you slowly start the disassociation process. Next time you do something where you normally have a smoke, don't. But have one not long after you have done the thing. i.e. if you have a smoke with coffee, drink your coffee, wait 10 minutes, then smoke.

In the meantime, sign up to a daily quit smoking reminder email service. There are many. This way, you will slowly educate yourself why you are trying to quit. Knowledge is power.

And whatever you do, don't punish yourself if you relapse! That is the worst thing. The whole "it's been 4 weeks since I smoked and now I've had one I'm a smoker again" is bullshit. If you have one, have one. But continue to keep trying to disassociate activities with smoking. I've quit for almost 4 years but I've had three or four in that time (each time I almost vomited) and it took me 3 years of failed attempts before the knowledge finally sank in...

Smoking is yet another attempt to control you. Very few people smoke and genuinely enjoy it. Those who do, fair enough. But the vast majority in their heads are desperate to quit. Be the brave one.

Good luck!

It's not harder.

Habits you had for a long time are hard to break. That's all.

In fact many drugs are much harder to quit than cigarettes, the withdrawal can be much more sever; alcohol, opioids

It took me 5 years, with two failed attempts, before I managed to quit.

Clean since December 1996.

It's tough, but you can do it.

(And I really loved my two packs per day, of Marlboro Reds!)

Read Allen Carr. Google him. I quit as soon as I read his book. Was wayyyy easier than I thought. Yes, you do struggle for a few days but definitely not as bad as I thought. It's on Amazon. Good luck mate. You can do it!

Smoking? I quit a daily pack and a half habit cold turkey. One just takes a new direction and doesn't look back. That was 20 years ago.

Let's see, the recipe is to use nicotine extract from super tobacco grown in Brazil, soak the tobacco and sawdust filler with ammonia to take the nicotine directly to the brain from the lungs as the smoke residue enters the blood stream.

What else did you want to know? Did you think that if you smoked their cigarettes that you were just going to be able to smoke one and then put the rest of the pack down? They want you to have your brain in a certain state based on the chemicals put into the tobacco and fillers. The only way to maintain that state is to keep smoking their cigarettes which you have to do due to the way the endocrine system latches onto the chemicals coming into the body from the cigarette.

Processed food is poison (and frankly gross). Also I live in the countryside; 90% of what I eat is local and/or cooked by me.

I never get people who become addicted to junk food. Well I get it from a biological point of view, but everytime I try to eat fast food or pre-cooked stuff it tastes like shit covered in salt and sugat

Awesome... and I’ll bet that you feel worlds better, not just physically, but about life in general.

I sure as hell do.

I never did AA myself, but I wasn’t addicted to alcohol... I drank to numb the pain of a personal loss.

I just had enough & decided to quit, and to apply the energy & time that I’d spent drinking to advancing and improving my life in every way.

Re: Why is quitting smoking harder than quitting drugs?
I had a similar experience. Quitting smoking cigarettes was much harder for me than quitting heroin and dilaudid. I did reflect on this at the time I quit smoking (age 30) as I was clearly struggling a lot more than I had with other drugs. I think there are several key factors. Cigarettes, although pricey (much moreso now) are a *lot* cheaper than drugs. As socially unacceptable as smoking was at the time I quit, doing hard drugs is really the social loser and not heroin chic as the fashion mags promoted at the time. Cigarettes kill you much more slowly and insidiously. Quitting drugs is clearly a matter of life and death whereas quitting cigarettes is more a matter of life and shorter life so you tend to feel you "have time to quit" and procrastinate.

I had to use nicotine gum for about a year and tapered off (much as I used methadone to get off heroin). Thought about cigarettes constantly for about 5 years but now I can't imagine I ever smoked. Everything is a lot better without cigarettes (and hard drugs!). Frankly, I don't know if I could have done it without the gum.

Good luck, OP hf
