Social security was to keep people too old and sick from dying of starvation or exposure. Not to "keep them in the manner to which they have become accustomed".

If you want a fully fleshed out "retirement lifestyle" you need to plan for that with retirement savings. Or have kids that will take care of you when you're old, like you did for them when they were small.

A person putting $2,000 away annually starting at age 20 has about $1.5 million by age 65. If something happens to them before they make it to 65 all that money goes to their family. Social Security puts all that money in the government’s hands to be spent, and they pay you a little ACH month according to their rules and screw you. she will get nothing and now works about 20 hours a week 8 an hour
