Still pitch dark for a while, then the sunrise begins and you wait patiently. Soon it's light enough to see and there you are witnessing the creation of God, it's amazing, not another soul in sight. That is church my friend, no one but you and God in his creation. |

Let me tell what it like now on the Merced River because I float a lot. Henderson Park in Snelling, the get out point is full of drug dealers, drug addicts and gangsters. Good luck not getting your car broken into. All the rows of parking spaces away from the main grass area have broken glass on the ground from break ins. The get in points maintained by Merced Irrigation District, likewise, gangsters, drugs. I've had my car broken into twice, window smashed. Even yesterday I pulled up next to the Coho parking lot, (not inside the lot, I park outside the broken down barbed wire fence now) and some gangster in a winter grey camouflage puffy coat almost immediately pulls very close to my car in his tricked out $80,000 truck. I decide to wait him out before leaving my car, he hangs out next to the shutdown restroom/drug dealing spot. I decide fuck it and drive upstream to another get in spot that isn't that safe either, wait about a half hour to see if anyone shows up, finally go floating wondering if my car will be broken into when I get back. This time no break in. Nature in the mountains in the shithole of all shithole National forests, Stanislaus National Forest is no better. Weekends is all dirtbikes in dead tree and burned out tree zones. |

The way my little baby’s fingers used to curl around mine when they were very small. My child’s faces when they’re totally absorbed in doing something that lights them up inside. The pleasurable feeling of kneading bread dough by hand... Hearing a song that touches my soul for the first time... People should do this exercise daily. I already feel gratitude welling up for all the beautiful things that have touched my life. Blessings to you OP. Working like crazy outdoors on a cold day all day long and coming in to a hot shower and homemade dinner. Looking at a finished woodpile. The smell of silage, hay, and warm cows on a frosty morning when you get up at 4am to milk them and how soft their flank is when you lean forward and press your head against it and pat them to let them know you are starting. Summer nights listening to the wind susurrating through the trees and owls calling, especially screech owls. The smell of the perfect strawberry, still warm from the sun before you pop it into your mouth. Ever since my children were just babies, I would take them strawberry picking and we would all pick our most perfect strawberry and close our eyes and remember the sun on our shoulders and the smell of that berry and then the way it tastes when you bite into it and save that for the coldest darkest morning of winter when we put homemade strawberry jam on our toast and had a little sunshine for breakfast. The playfulness of kittens and then, when they are good and tired, the snuggliness of a little purring ball of fur close against you. Sunsets and sunrises, moons and stars and especially meteor showers and the auroras - the kind where you wake everyone up in the wee hours and spread a blanket out on the lawn and take popcorn and thermos of hot chocolate or chamomile tea and all lay on the blanket and watch. hours and hours of free time to read a good book cover to cover "Violence simply is not radical enough, since it generally changes only the rulers but not the rules.
