People tend to project their personality onto their vehicle. It sort of becomes their avatar on the road. Quoting: •Scott• Lately any accessory that can be bolted onto a Jeep Wrangler that makes it appear bigger and meaner has been selling like hotcakes. Off road mods I get. Lifts, bigger tires make a Jeep more capable off road. But one came in the other day and it looked like something out of a Mad Max movie. It was dull black, it had a steel visor and the whole nose was sheet metal and he had put red halos in the once round and now evil squinting headlights to make it look as menacing as possible. Mazda went through a brief period with their cars when they made them to look like they were grinning and it almost bankrupted them. They weren't well received at all. No one wanted a happy smiling car. Any car or truck that is fast, loud and can look intimidating is getting snapped up in record numbers. Challengers. Chargers. The new $100,000 Ram TRX Hellcat truck. We can't keep them in stock. Driving styles are also reflecting attitudes and egos. These jacked up jeeps and trucks are rarely driven slowly and sedately. They're usually tailgating, speeding, whipping in and out of traffic and just begging for a wreck. I'm seeing it as a collective cry for help. People are afraid and insecure, and they certainly don't want to appear that way to their fellow humans, so overcompensation in the other direction is the result. Why else take a humble jeep like this, https://imgur.com/FSUfpEy And spend a lot of money to turn it into something like this? https://imgur.com/L0vbPSc That's so weird that you posted this, OP, because last night and today I was looking at accessory and upgrade type stuff for a car I bought last July. The problem is that I know nothing about cars so I don't even know what's available. While searching the web, I looked at a couple of car forums (all guys, of course) discussing the car I have and was thinking how these guys must spend a huge amount of money tricking out their vehicles. I noticed they liked changing chrome parts for black but it was more a sporty thing than menacing. I did see a couple of mentions of the storm trooper thing (star wars?). As an older female, that isn't anything that appeals to me but, I have to say, that Jeep looks pretty bad ass! However, I get what you're saying about the avatar for personalities and the aggression. What you described fits anti social personality disorder, aka, sociopath and there are a LOT of them out there. One such type got into a road rage confrontation with man who lived near me and beat him to death, in 2016. The perp was 18 or 19 years old and bragged about it before he was arrested. That would be just the type to drive one of these trucks you're talking about. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 70975542 like glowing red cat eyes, snake eyes, etc?? i would sit in traffic and just see this, it's unmistakable. I know what a normal headlight looks like, it doesn't look like the eye of sauron, and suddenly, all the newer cars look satanic. plus they all got '666' on the license plates, what the fuck is that? I go to the BMV and there's 'sample' plates posted all over everything with '999 999' on the plates why are we in hell? it's all lesbians in power. My own headlights are slanted and look a little mean. I would prefer round ones but it's not like you can change them if you like the car. I also hate those super bright headlights because they blind other drivers. Can't change those either and all newer cars have them. I think they should be outlawed. Does that make us superficial? Maybe but...I don't know, am I missing the point of the question? I drove a thirty-five year old jeep that caught fire and burned to the ground in the middle of an intersection. The fire department could not reach me until too late because of the International bike race held in Richmond a few years ago had over 45 miles of streets blocked. Until your military service has required you neutralize enemy combatants and invaders in the defense of your country, don't presume to tell us that have defended you that you don't support every shot we fired to eliminate that enemy. |
