You are already taxed on unrealized gains, on real estate. They asses your property according to market. My house is supposedly worth 450k. It's only because of location, it has nothing to do with actual worth of the home. I pay 4600 a year in tax, more than double in 15 years.
I could potentially get some insane amount for the lot, then I pay capital gains anyway.

401K are a way to stash earnings so they won't be taxed. When you withdraw funds then they are taxed as income. How will this effect 401Ks?

The assessed tax value of my home has gone both up and down. The last assessment dropped the value back from the previous assessed increased value by 35,000. I don't know why. Would they reimburse me for the loss of capital gains?
